A Snowball's Chance in Hell (DCI Logan Crime Thrillers Book 9) Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 16,968 ratings

Which list are you on?

When a young man is found frozen to death on a Highland street in mid-December, DCI Jack Logan initially puts it down to a Christmas night out gone tragically wrong.

But, when a post mortem reveals something more sinister, Jack discovers he is dealing with a cold, calculating killer with a long line of victims, a talent for torture, and a perverse sense of justice.

Half a decade ago, the press dubbed him ‘The Iceman’ - a twisted vigilante who successfully evaded capture for two years, before melting away into the night.

Now, The Iceman has come back. His naughty list is longer than ever. And it contains some worryingly familiar names…

A Snowball’s Chance in Hell is the ninth book in the internationally bestselling DCI Jack Logan Scottish crime fiction series. Perfect for fans of Ian Rankin, Stuart Macbride, and Val McDermid.

JD Kirk lives in the Highlands of Scotland with his wife, two children, and a number of sturdy umbrellas. He also doesn't exist. JD is, in fact, the pen name of award-winning author, comic book writer and screenwriter, Barry Hutchison, who also, coincidentally, lives in the Highlands with his wife, two children, and the aforementioned umbrellas.

He has no idea what the 'JD' bit stands for.

How does this happen? They get better??? Very exciting if a tad improbable. That poor Fiesta. Does it snow that much in Scotland?

DCI Logan is a series I automatically preorder. The adventures of the Iverness polis are just too intriguing to pass up. You definitely want to start with book one. This is nine, so make sure you start at the beginning.

Another case from the past has come back to haunt the team. This time it is a serial killer who only kills criminals who were acquitted. Unfortunately, the original suspect confessed and killed himself and the new top suspects were too young to have been the killer before. Then there is the secret hit list from the original case. The list that names Ben, Hamza, and Hoon. Will the killer be coming after the team? Can they find the culprit before more victims pile up? And will Logan manage to buy to Shona a Christmas present without driving himself crazy?

Another great police mystery! And what a storyline. The Iceman is back. Killing people who have done bad things but failed to receive punishment due to a good lawyer getting them off. DCI Logan and his team believe they finally got to the bottom of the ones doing the killing, but have they? Looks like we will have to read on to be sure! I can't wait.

I know everyone else is giving more stars, but I save more stars for amazing works. So 3 is good for me. The characters are fun and interesting and the mysteries good. I still guess the bad guys, but always not their motives.
I have to say I am not fond of the cops as victims trope. It's a very American thing in police procedurals and annoys me. Usually it's not so bad in British works. But this group has now been targeted by 3 different criminals. We had the whisper guy, the Russian drug lord, and now the ice guys. Lame. I can't buy into it. I am wondering if that psychopath Hoon is the Iceman at the end. That could be why he was there to rescue Ben and Tyler, but waited so long. If he was following them, why did he let them suffer so much? He is an awful disgusting person, so maybe he liked watching it. I know he gets his own series later, but he could easily be a psycho killer.

I live with Logan and his team. It is so real to me. The words and expressions he used make me smile and laugh. it takes me back to my Homeland almost 60 years ago. I can feel the chill in the air. The wet wet rain, the sleet, the narrow roads. it is so good to be able to remember being in the locations he is writing about.

I must admit I am starting to feel sad as I have almost read/ listened to them all. Born in Scotland I was raised in NZ and so miss hearing my Mum & Dad’s accents, these books all bring them back to me, plus I love the wit, and the storylines 💖
