    Sometimes it isn’t the obvious solution. This story is full of what appears obvious but isn’t true at all. The story is another chapter about London Rose who happens upon a dead body yet again while working as social director on a river cruise along the Blue Danube. If you like your sleuths to be untrained investigators that you can easily identify with and working at a job involving travel and meeting many people with some having romantic ideas then this is your type of book. Enjoy the history and culture of places you have not yet traveled to in realty but let it become a virtual trip full of surprises, beauty, and danger.

    Blake Pierce continues to charm, entice and teach. The London Rose series is a travelogue with mystery, humor and character descriptions of the passengers aboard the riverboat where she serves as Social Director. I want to buy a ticket on her next sailing. I read this wonderful description of Vienna with Mozart’s life and music intertwined with an interesting tale of intrigue in two sittings. It was much too much fun to put down!

    Death and Apple Strudel is the second in the series European Voyage by Rachel Pierce. This book takes London Rose to Vienna with the other crew of the river boat, Naucktmusik she is excited about this journey and also apprehensive as this is where her mother disappeared some years before. The author uses amazing descriptions and I was instantly transported to Europe. The sights and sounds leaped off the page. We get to know other passengers and the crew. When the ship docks in Vienna a tour has been arranged for a local tour guide to take them, the group enjoys the sites and tours for part of the day, then they end the tour and go their seperate ways. London Rose has to return to the last part of the tour as one of the passengers has lost their phone. When London arrives at the Opera House, she does find the phone as well as discovers a dead body. London inserts herself into the investigation and once again solves the crime. I found I liked London Rose a bit more this time, and others who I liked in the first book had more personalities revealed that made me no longer like them. The on thing that could have made this 5 stars would have been if the mystery and murder would have been revealed sooner, it seemed to be presented more than halfway through the book and then solved quickly as well. I would like to continue the journey and read the next in the series. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

    I love these cozy mysteries! This second work had another surprise ending. I didn't suspect the actual perpetrator at all. So, not only are these safe stories to read, but they are quite intriguing as well. I hope I can find more of them.

    I liked the travel and tour scenes. It reminded me of the river cruise my wife and I were on a few years back (other than the thefts and murder.) The characters and plot were interesting and the book definitely kept my interest.

    Much like a cruise down the Danube, “Death and Apple Strudel” gently meanders through the build up to the next mystery to be solved by the social director of the river tour ship, the Nachtmusik. London Rose has recently solved the murder of a passenger and taken ownership of the deceased’s small terrier, Sir Reginald Taft, (Reggie) who provides numerous delightful moments to the story. There are introductions to a cantankerous author, a passenger with an impossible demand to maintain his room temperature and a few passengers who all own similar small statues of musicians. A new passenger, Bob Taft, is a former NY City police officer sent by the cruise line owner to handle any future investigations, though his credentials are sorely overstated.

    When the ship finally docks in Vienna, Austria, the passengers are treated to a tour of the city. Halfway through the tour, the body of the local tour director is discovered by London Rose and the solving of the mystery begins. The solution to the mystery is very well crafted and provides good suspense.

    I received a free copy of this book from BookSirens and am voluntarily providing my honest review. Though the beginning meanders through a recap of the first book in this series and a few minor mysterious events, the plot picks up with the discovery of the murdered tour guide. There Is also good information provided about the area around Vienna.
