Editorial Reviews

Coming back harder, faster, and louder than they ever have, their sixth full-length studio album Black Sheep of the American Dream marks the band's return to hardcore punk roots. With this album, DBS brought back original bassist and founding member, Paul Miner. Paul co-produced, co-wrote, engineered, mixed and mastered the album. With several years of experience producing under Paul's belt working with some of the most recognized punk, hardcore and metal bands around this record sounds like a brick to the face.

Musically speaking, this is a great hardcore album. The ten-song lineup is lean and aggressive (the average song length being about 3 minutes). Each song gets in your face, says what it wants to say, does what it needs to do, and is over before anything gets too redundant. With this album, it's all thriller with no filler. The guitar work is some of the best this band has ever produced. Through expanding drum patterns and different rhythms, everything still remains tight and in sync.

The reason that this album gets the full five-star treatment from me is because of what I feel it represents (note - everything past this point is personal theory). So many of the hardcore bands that emerged at the time of Death by Stereo have gone "soft", adopting a more radio-friendly sound and persona as their band "matures". I've always hated when bands say that they've matured, as it usually means that these groups got older and, in a small way, feel that their previous music style is unrefined. They dump the more hardcore aspects of their music at the regret of most of their original fans (A7X, I'm looking in your direction). I would rather see a band get better at what they do throughout the years than simply soften up because of the aging process.

This album is a testament to sticking to your stylistic guns. Small refinements over large-scale style changes. That is something worth five stars.

Something was missing from their last 2 releases but all the energy is back. Vocals are better than ever and the guitars...*gasp*...amazing. Not a let down among any of the songs here. Thanks!!

I love Death by Stereo and they are one of my favorite bands. Album after album they keep pumping up classic energy fast songs. I've never had a problems with there albums as a whole, they've always had more good songs than bad. I think the most songs I didn't on one album is three songs. But this album has not one filler song. Get this new masterpiece it's phenomenal.

3.0 out of 5 stars ganz OK...

Also das Album ist wie die Vorgänger in gewohnter Qualität, sprich still rumsitzen ist nicht...
Aber ich muss sagen, dass der Vorgänger "Death is my only friend" mir besser gefällt.
Ansonsten sind die Jungs live der Hammer! Weiter so!
