- Reviewed in the United States on April 28, 2019The author took on two challenges, and handled them well. The novel is written almost entirely in dialogue, and the main character is male, written in first person, while the author is female. It traces a relationship as it develops over time with characters that are easy to care about and root for. Tricia Copeland has written a number of enjoyable books and I hope she keeps writing.

3 out of 5 Stars
This book was sweet. Very sweet. I had a hard time coming up with another word to describe it but the words, actions, writing, characters, are all just very sweet. Both Zack and Liz are incredibly loveable characters. I love Zack. He is broken in many ways, and Liz is the right person to piece him back together. Liz is very spicy and she has a passion for life and for movement. Zack needs that in his mostly stagnant life. Ms. Copeland is a fabulous writer. I love reading her stories. While this book is a stand-alone and is complete within itself, you will enjoy the book and the rest of the series if you read them in order. There were a few characters who I did not care for, but I do believe added to the depth of the book. I recommend this book and series.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 13, 2018Tricia is a master at keeping you engaged in the book. I love that she includes adversity and working through emotions in her books. Another book that leaves you wishing for more! Kudos Tricia for another great book.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 19, 2018I really enjoyed Zach’s character in the Being Me series and rooted for him. Deepest Scars gave me a chance to once again be Zach’s cheerleader as he pursues a chance at a new relationship. Copeland does a great job of setting a stage so the reader has a front row seat to the emotions of falling in love.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 16, 2018Deepest Scars by Tricia Copeland is a standalone companion novel set in her being me series. This is the story of Zack, a man that is nursing a broken heart and has moved to a new city and completely started over in the hopes of healing. When he meets Liz the connection they feel is immediate. Not only is Liz beautiful she also shares most of Zack’s interests and is genuinely fun to be with. The relationship quickly progresses from friends to something much more but eventually he learns that his new dream girl has her own secrets that she’s hiding. Will the secrets of the past force a wedge in their present? Will their newfound love be strong enough to weather the storm when everything comes out? Can Zack get Liz to let her walls down and let him all the way in?
I really enjoyed this story. The characters were well thought out and getting to see their daily lives was a nice way to let us see them grow not just as a couple but as separate people as well. By the time I was done reading this book Zack and Liz felt like old friends that I’ve known for years and not simply characters in a book. The plot was a little slow at time because of the depth of world building that Ms. Copeland puts into her book but it was still paced well enough that I stayed up much later than I should have reading this book. This is without a doubt a solid four star book and I am looking forward to reading more of her books in this series.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 31, 2018It's a cute and innocent story but I felt like the main characters were in their teens rather than their twenties and experiencing their first love. Not a lot of experience about life and second guessing every move. I suppose I like my characters more sure of themselves.
The writing style didn't make it for me either and sometimes it felt puerile. What really saved this story were the funny moments and some of the dialogues because the inner thoughts lacked meaning. It's not a bad idea for the plot and if the characters had more depth and the writing style was more mature this book would easily receive a 5 stars review from me :)
- Reviewed in the United States on March 29, 2018I give Deepest Scars: A Being Me Stand-Alone Companion Novel by Tricia Copeland, 4 stars.
This is a sweet romance centered around Zack and Liz. Zack has been hurt deeply in the past, so he spends his time on his job, working out, and multiple sports. His does need another woman, this works great for him. Then he runs into a girl with bright red hair -- and there is just something about her. Maybe he wasn't really living before.
Liz is running away. All she wants is a new start. She keeps to herself, it is safer that way. But then she has a chance encounter with Zack. But she decides that since he likes a lot of the same things, they can be great friends. But what happens when he tries to break those barriers down?
They have a lot going against them -- she has many secrets she's hiding, he is emotionally scared from his relationship. Not to mention their families, upbringing and religions are complete opposites. Will it work out? Is that what they really want?
I enjoyed this romance novel. While there were a few twists I saw coming, I was still left surprised by others. This a sweet romance story, not one that is hot and heavy with explicit scenes. While I found this fun, it may not be for everyone. This is also what makes it acceptable for a YA audience, although the character are in their 20s.
If you are a fan of a wonderfully written romance novel, this book is for you.

Deepest Scars is a companion novel to (and set in) the ‘Bring Me’ Series. It can be read as a standalone, which is what I did. This is my second book by Ms. Copeland, the first being ‘Lovelock Ones’ which is quite different from this, as it is a sci-fi/dystopian story. Ms. Copeland proves she can write different genres equally well and showcases her imaginative and creative mind.
This is a story of second chances, fresh starts, love, secrets and more. We are introduced to Zack and Liz, who were great together- and I was cheering them on the whole way through. There was something a little mysterious about Zack to begin with, and I like how the author revealed him layer by layer. He has a past, suffered heartache and desperately wants a fresh start. Liz seems to be his ideal woman, but what happens when secrets are revealed?
These characters are fantastic, and we really get to ‘know’ them over the course of the story. I thought Ms. Copeland developed her characters beautifully and I enjoyed my time with them.
The story was a little slow at times, but I think that’s because the story was so descriptive and detailed. The author didn’t just write the story, she invested some heart and soul into developing the characters and their whole ‘world’.
Thank you, Ms. Copeland!
