Deflected Hearts: A Surprise Pregnancy Hockey Romance (Wyncote Wolves Book 2) Kindle Edition

3.9 out of 5 stars 1,731 ratings

Poppy

August Whitley was just a fling–someone fun to spend my time with no strings attached.

We broke things off before our feelings grew, but it was already too late.

After leaving town, I swore to myself that I would never look back.

And when I get surprising news, I’m completely committed to doing it alone.

Until one night when he walks back into my life…

August

Poppy Williams. She was an enigma and a mystery that I wanted to unravel.

Neither of us were ready for a commitment and after a misunderstanding, she left town without a single word.

I tried to find her, but it was as if she fell off the grid. It was messing with my head and becoming a threat to my hockey career.

Until one night, one date with another girl… I find Poppy working at the restaurant and she’s pregnant.

With my child.

I let her leave me once before, but this time I won’t let her get away.

It's always been you.
4 out of 5 stars
It's always been you.
“Since the moment I met you, even if I didn’t want to admit it at first… it’s always been you and it always will be you.” Deflected Hearts was a sweet, but very angst-filled read. With most second-chance reads, the main characters – Poppy and August – goes through quite a bit. There’s plenty of ups and downs with these two. Poppy has many trust issues, sometimes those issues are justified, and other times… well, I think she’s just being a pain in the butt. She’s with August who pretty much has a one track mind. His focus is mostly on hockey. Everyone has known that since day one. So, it should’ve been no surprise to her when he put hockey first before everything else. When it came to the big things that happened, he was there. “Realization strikes me and it’s a blow to my chest—hitting me directly in my heart. I’m in love with August Whitley.” The relationship that these two shared was a satisfying one, with minimal steamy moments. I didn’t always feel like I connected with these two, though. You kind of get the tail end of their fling in Cross Checked Hearts and then there’s a bit of time between that book and Deflected Hearts. You’re sort of thrown in and things move fast between them, which is fine, because they clearly knew each other. However, we didn’t exactly get to know them. Don’t get me wrong, I really enjoyed Deflected Hearts and I enjoyed seeing Logan and Isla, as well as the new characters, August and Poppy. I just wish there’d been a little more to the book… what, I’m not entirely sure. I’m hoping we’ll get to understand and know all these characters the more that the series goes on!

Omg i don’t even know where to begin on this story!! August and Poppy have completely stolen my heart and all my emotions!!! Calle has completely outdone herself with the telling of this story.

August and poppy’s story started in the first book but you didn’t really get an insight into what was going on and now having their own story we get to see both sides of the story line.
Poppy is beautiful, stubborn, strong and very independent and she really starts to figure out who she is and who she wants to be. She has had her fair share of heartache and pain and so at times it makes her very stubborn and not willing to let people in, but once August comes into her life, her whole world is flipped on it’s axis.
August is loving, committed, stubborn as well and honestly has no idea what he has gotten himself into. But one thing about August is that he has been head over heels in love with Poppy from the moment he met her but he just didn’t know it for the longest time! Once August figures out his priorities, there is no stopping him!! And Poppy is not ready for the level of commitment he gives to her because it’s so swoon worthy ❤️❤️

This story is absolutely incredible and loving and beautifully heartbreaking as well. But Calle makes up for the hurt feelings that we may feel while reading it because she gives us a story worth reading!! I’m looking forward to reading the next story line she has coming for us!

I love Poppy and August. I loved their interactions with each other, and I loved how they bonded. I don’t think I’ve read a book with this trope before, but I think I like it! The conflict in this story fell a bit flat for me. It felt a little overly dramatic. If you do read this book, just keep in mind that it’s a book about pregnancy. It’s mentioned a whoooole lot as the reason of their connection. Overall, it’s a very cute story that I finished in 38 mins (I couldn’t put it down!) if you like the pregnancy trope and sports romances, then you should check it out!

    Trigger Warning (contains spoiler):
As someone who has family members who have experienced this, I just feel like it’s very important to mention:

    — contains miscarriage scare

    A couple others:

    — grief
    — mentions of death

I had so much hope for august and poppy’s story, but I feel like I’m the end we where left with a lot of loose ends… does August continue with hockey, how does the team react to the baby, etc… it also lacked a lot of story line that could have. Been Available, hockey scenes lacked climax and clearly so did the spice scenes. I will continue the series because, well I’m not a quitter. But this one kind of disappointed me.

I’m not sure who I love more August or Logan so I’m just going to take them both!!!!

First things first I’m starting to become obsessed with this series. August Whitley is EVERYTHING and more. He’s so much more then that player loving guy we met previously.

Secondly…. Poppy!!!! This girl is hands down one of the strongest most independent heroine I have ever read about. I absolutely loved the interactions between her and August.

From the cover of this book to the whole plot there is nothing I disliked. It has heartwarming moments but also some sad ones. Cali really did do a amazing job planning this one out. It made me laugh and it made my heart melt. I said it before I read a lot of sport romances. One of the things about them that draw my attention is how well the author knows what she’s writing about. Cali knows her hockey!!!! She is turning this series into one that will forever be a favorite.

I can’t wait for more of this series. Cali is a one click author of mine. Do yourself a favor and one click this one. You won’t be disappointed!!

Actions speak louder than words. Proving you will show up means more than empty promises. August and Poppy start out on thin ice, only wanting a no strings attached arrangement. Then life throw’s them a curve ball when Poppy finds out she’s pregnant.

Poppy’s determination, strength and willpower, with the mindset to do it all on her own, just makes me go “WOMEN!” After finding out she’s pregnant, all her focus is about the baby and finishing school early to support both of them. She’s used to relying on her own and cleaning up other people’s messes.

August has his whole life mapped out and all his focus is on achieving his goals. But when he finds out Poppy is pregnant, his future and all he’s planned for starts to change. He needed to prove to Poppy that he will be there for them both, no matter what.

“I know I shouldn’t walk away from her right now, but I need space, and time to process. It f’s with my brain, thinking about how she has known for a few months and didn’t want to tell me because she didn’t want to disrupt my life… Doesn’t she already know? She disrupted my life the moment she walked into it.”

“August’s lips curl upward. “That’s exactly what I mean,” he breathes, his gaze dropping down to my lips. “A strong and independent woman who doesn’t need a man. And f*^k, it’s sexy as h3!!.”

“You think you know someone and then they turn around and prove that you really didn’t know them all along.”

So, I like the premise of this book, it moved smoothly and quickly. Minor things that I feel like would have made it better was the meet the parents. We see August having the talk, but we missed Poppy and how that went. We got told it went well and happened. The climax fell short for me. The book is really an internal struggle, but it's a fairly light read. There is no over the top drama it angst.

I've been so excited to read August's and Poppy's story and it didn't disappoint!

Poppy has been through a lot, her parents split up and remarried and amongst that she also lost her sister in a tragic accident. Her and August had a no strings attached arrangement, but when she finds out she's pregnant after they broke up she panics and leaves.
August is focused on one thing only - Ice Hockey. He doesn't like to commit to relationships as he doesn't want anything interfering with his plan to get to the NHL, but when he meets Poppy he starts to like her more than just a fling and when she suddenly disappears he can't get her off his mind. On a date with someone else he discovers Poppy again, but she's pregnant and he thinks it might be his.

I really enjoyed watching August step up in this book, for someone who is so dedicated to ice hockey and says they have no time for anything else he really surprised me with his support for Poppy. Their chemistry was so good and I knew it wouldn't be long until they got back together. I really liked Poppy and how she was determined to finish school and not be co-dependant on August for everything. Their relationship was so sweet and they have a lot of passion for each other. My heart broke for them at times, but they truly are made for each other.
I loved the epilogue and the bonus epilogue.
Can't wait for the next book in the Wyncote Wolves series.

Poppy and August's story was so heartfelt and heartbreaking at the same time. Surprise pregnancy is one of my most favourite tropes so I was very excited to give this book a read. I loved how commited August was to both Poppy and the baby. The reasoning behind them breaking up did break my heart as you could tell how important this appointment was to Poppy. My only thought is that I wished it went for longer. I was so invested in their story that when it ended I was definitely left in a hangover. I would've loved to see a bit more between the last few chapters and the complication to then Poppy having the baby but overall I thought it was a great book. Also the fact they named it Everett😭 that broke my heart and filled it at the same time.

This book feels like I’m reading the book number one in this series again. I wish it would be a bit more original and came with something to make it feel different.
The male main character just decided to change out of the blue and decide that he is ok with a child while his original personality would suggest the contrary.

Its not that this book was bad, its just for me personally, it was very basic. My main issue was the fact when we start the book, the two main mcs have already met and broken up, so the main part had already happened and there were no flash backs to a first meeting or a breakup so it made for a lot less angst. I don't need a lot, but I like to be in the story as its happening not half way through. Maybe something was mentioned of them in the first book but it wouldn't have been from their pov. And while later there was some brief sort of angst, it was very predictable and honestly, not that big of a thing imo. There was no backstory as to why he was so against an attachment, but it seemed like page filler for what was there. I didnt really see any character development and what little there was, I just kept thinking, so what was they like before the book started? Couldn't relate
