Hi, I am Ian, founder of DeFunkMe. Here's a little about me:

I am a mechanical designer, author, entrepreneur, speaker and perpetual student (I love learning). I am glad to be alive! Because I nearly wasn't...

On my 21st birthday, I tried to take my own life. Obviously, I messed that up because I’m still here. Again in 2014, I hit rock bottom and had thoughts of ending it. On paper, I had it all—a lovely wife, two great kids, a good job with good pay, a renovated house and yet I was severely depressed and suicidal.

With a wife and two kids, suicide wasn’t an option and I needed help, badly!

Now, I am the happiest and healthiest I have ever been. When I look back on my crippling depression in 2014, I see it as the best thing that has ever happened to me. Why? Because I finally got the help I needed, and new information and techniques that completely turned my life around. It wasn’t easy or cheap, but it was worth it.

My mission is to pass on the information that helped me.

My vision is to help others improve the quality of their life.

If you struggle with depression or know someone who does, this is a must read! Ian shares his compelling story of his own struggles with clinical depression and suicide attempts. The best way for those of us who don't suffer from this condition to support those who do is to get inside their mind to understand they way they process life rather than judge them as weak we must see them as wounded. Ian was obviously committed to find relief from his pain no matter how many doors he had to knock on. His efforts paid off well and now he is sharing what worked for him for a healthier, happier life with the world. I am encouraged and grateful that Ian's approach is both practical and available to any and everyone. It involves changing our habits, our health, and our internal dialog. Anyone who is willing to do the work can get the results! Thank you, Ian for turning your mess into a valuable message. May this work reach far and wide to heal a multitude of people.
Cheers To A Life Of Vitality!

Having lost my own brother to the harsh reality of depression, this book is a real asset to people trying to deal with some of the less than ideal situations people often find themselves in.

The book is practical, down to earth, easy to read. Written for blokes, by a very good bloke, Ian.

The book details six steps to improving quality of life and goes into detail on how the six steps will help improve state of mind and quality of life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ehrliches Buch, das motiviert
Reviewed in Germany on May 9, 2017

    Choice, Decision and Commitment
    Goals, Habits and Growth
    Thoughts and Beliefs
    Food
    Exercise
    Peace of Mind

5.0 out of 5 stars Heart felt story with techniques to cope with depression
Reviewed in Australia on May 8, 2017
Ian Schell has written a story of his personal struggle with depression and the techniques he used to cope with it.

The first part of the book details his own personal story, how he attempted suicide on his 21st birthday and how his adult life was a battle with depression.

The second part of the book details the techniques that he used to turn his life around. There are six basic principals, hence the name of the book, baSIX.

The language and tone of the book are definitely 'earthy' with a very conversational style and the odd expression that may offend some people. The conversational and real world language should connect with a lot of blokes who need this type of book!

The book distills many ideas and practical suggestions for coping with depression without medication. This book is about what worked for the author and hopefully what will work for other people as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars What an informative book of guidelines to help in the education and awareness of anziety and Depression
Reviewed in Australia on May 8, 2017
I have had the privilege to read this book a couple of times, it is good to go back and re-visit, to find motivation to create a better living outcome for people who are sometimes consumed with self doubt, self punishment and self criticism.
I would find it difficult to believe that any reader would put the book down at the end and not think,
"well the set of coping tools in my tool box have just been upgraded.

Good Job Ian Schell Keep well through your life Journey

5.0 out of 5 stars Raw personal story with real life steps for improvement
Reviewed in Australia on May 7, 2017
Great balance between graphic story telling and actionable steps to improve your life!

This book is quite raw and confronting. The author is a real-life, everyday guy who has suffered from anxiety and depression for most of his life. He shares the ups and downs of his journey and provides the most basic, but amazing steps we can take to help improve our life, but most importantly to overcome depression and anxiety.

Perfect for people who are ready to overcome stress, depression, anxiety or PTSD - highly recommended!
