Devious Obsession: A Dark Hockey Romance (Hockey Gods) Kindle Edition

4.3 out of 5 stars 10,921 ratings

"If you want to stay, you have to play the game…"

Steele O’Brien is everything I hate in hockey players.
He’s cocky, brooding, antagonistic.

I played his game, learned his secrets.
But that was before I found out he’s my new stepbrother.

Now we’re at college together, and I can’t escape him.
Or his demons.

It seems that, for him, the game isn’t over.
He says I'm his to play with. His to torment.
And he's determined to not only get under my skin, but carve his name into it.

What red flags? I’m colorblind now.
I read this book weeks ago and I am still 𝓾𝓷𝔀𝓮𝓵𝓵. Like, fully…just take me out. I’m DEADDDD over this man. Aspen throws caution to the wind at a college party one night when she’s paired with the school’s bad boy hockey player, Steele O’Brien. They act out her dirtiest fantasies and go their separate ways, never planning to see each other again. Or so they think. Wouldn’t you know it, Aspen finds out that Steele is her new step-brother. His father pays for her to attend the expensive university in exchange for becoming a “spy” for him so he can make sure Steele is staying in line. Once our depraved bad boy finds out about her secret mission, he makes her life a living hell. He bullies her, brutally using her body however he wants, and possesses her in every way. And as much as he hates her, he begins to love her just as much. Aspen is such an amazing FMC. She has had a rough life and dreams of playing piano in front of the world. She has to overcome so much…and she’s also learning who she is (and Steele is there to push her limits with every new discovery.) This couple is as beautiful as they are toxic and it’s sooooooo hot! S Massery knows how to write every single emotion perfectly while simultaneously making me absolutely colorblind to the color red. Literally, 𝑰 𝒄𝒂𝒏’𝒕 𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒏 𝒔𝒆𝒆 𝒕𝒉𝒐𝒔𝒆 𝒇𝒍𝒂𝒈𝒔. Respectfully, I would let Steele O’Brien choke the last breath from my body. And then I would come back to life to say “𝓣𝓱𝓪𝓷𝓴 𝔂𝓸𝓾, 𝓓𝓪𝓭𝓭𝔂.”

Steele. Wow. These boys are crazy. Seriously. Drugging. Repeatedly. So, be warned. The Thalia kiss was weird. But thankfully dropped immediately so no big deal. I'm jumping straight to the next one.

I like my book boyfriends to be a little twisted and very possessive, but holy crap this took it to a whole new level.

Steele told no lies when he said he was going to ruin Aspen’s life. Luckily Aspen is a little messed up in the head too so they make a good match.

This one starts out crazy from the gates and keeps it going through the whole story. Super fun read, but be sure to check your TWs!!

Devious Obsession by S. Massery is the second book in a new series that I am totally obsessed with. It is a dark bully college sports romance with a few twists. Please read the author's note at the beginning of this book to check out what those dark themes are. I am never disappointed when S. Massery gifts us with her writing magic. I wish her stories would keep going. I love the world and characters that she has created in this series. She brings her books to life with the words she uses. Her characters and the worlds she creates for them are complex, have depth, and will have you turning the pages to see what happens next. The heat and spice in this book will have you taking breaks to cool off. This book is definitely one of her spicier books. I loved every minute of it!!!

Steele is obsessive, possessive, broody, a hockey god, and gives no flocks. He has certain tastes and seems to be bored with life. I loved his attitude and his darker side. Aspen was a good girl, follow directions, made the grades, and tried to stay invisible to get by. Then when they meet it's explosive and exciting. I loved the twists that are thrown into their story. Just the emotional roller-coaster that Aspen took me on was heartbreaking and heartwarming. I loved her growth thru this book. Steele was the perfect anti-hero. He was crass, devious, and got what he wanted always. They were drawn to each other no matter how hard they fought against it.

If you like authors like Becca Steele, and Tracy Lorraine you will love S. Massery. This book can be read as a stand-alone, but I recommend reading Brutal Obsession to catch all the characters in this series. Happy Reading!!!

My Review: I really enjoyed this book and fell in love with Steele and Aspen. They were so explosive and wickedly hot together. I liked this book more than the previous one in the series partly because Steele wasn’t as cruel or hateful as Greyson was in his. Steele had his terrible moments for sure, but he was also tender and sweet with Aspen and I felt more remorse from him. Aspen had an awful and traumatic childhood but it shaped her into the strong and sensual woman she is today and I loved that her past didn’t define her. She is beautiful and curvy and embraces her body and Steele is utterly obsessed with her gorgeousness. They were pure fire together and I loved every moment of their story. Highly recommend!

I’ve enjoyed everyone of this group of Hockey Gods. Steele’s story was no exception. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Aspen and Steele’s dark fantasies play a role in Steele’s anger toward her family but they both feel more emotions towards each other as they learn more about each other’s past. Lots of spice 🌶🌶🌶🌶🌶 with a nice HEA.

*Please check your trigger warnings before going into this one*

I'm going to be completely honest, I was a little on and off with this story when I first started reading. It was recommended by a friend who thought I would love it. So I stuck with it, and she was right yet again. (Thank you Jess xx)

Aspen and Steel's first meeting kicks off right from the first few pages, and there is an immediate attraction. The author doesn't shy away from driving straight into the spice and sets the tension for the rest of the book.

Once Steele realises that Aspen is his new stepsister, he makes it his goal to drive Aspen to leave college or completely ruin her in doing so. Too bad she is committed to seeing through her education, even if just to point that she has a secure job to get away from Steele and her new stepfather.

The stalker/tormentor romance aspect of this book played out in the usual satisfying way, but it was Aspen's secrets and the hint of suspense that kept me glued to the pages. By the time I was 2/3 of the way through, I couldn't read it fast enough.

There is plenty of push and pull in their relationship to keep things tense, with all the crumbs of affection scattered through to make you want it more. With plenty of spice to keep you warm ;)

I think that this is the kind of book you will either really enjoy or it just isn't for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Intense Rollercoaster of Passion and Possession

    Heat Level: 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

This is my second dive into the world crafted by S. Massery, and once again, I found myself ensnared in a whirlwind of emotions. "Brutal Obsession" from the Hockey Gods series is a relentless journey into the complex dynamics of passion, possession, and the dark corners of love.

Before delving into this compelling tale, I must emphasize the need to pay attention to the trigger warnings. Much like the first book in the series, this one also ventures into darker territories, adding layers of intensity to the narrative.

Steele O’Brien, the embodiment of everything one might dislike in a hockey player – cocky, brooding, and antagonistic. Yet, as the layers of his character are peeled back, the revelation that he's the new stepbrother throws an unexpected twist into the mix. College becomes the arena where the game intensifies, and the stakes are higher than ever.

The hero's over-the-top possessiveness and jealousy may seem overbearing at first, but as the story unfolds, it becomes an integral part of the narrative. Witnessing his eventual fall is nothing short of exhilarating; there's no turning back, and that's precisely what makes these stories so captivating.

The emotional rollercoaster that "Brutal Obsession" takes you on is truly extraordinary. I found myself shedding tears, unable to tear myself away from the gripping narrative until the very end. Listening to the audiobook simultaneously heightened the experience, bringing the characters to life with a depth that resonated with every word.

    S. Massery's writing is impeccable, weaving a tale that is as intense as it is poignant. The author skillfully crafts a narrative that captures the complexities of love, obsession, and redemption. "Brutal Obsession" is not just a romance novel; it's an exploration of the human psyche in the face of passion and the tumultuous journey towards love.

In conclusion, if you're ready for a literary rollercoaster that explores the depths of dark romance with characters that will both infuriate and endear themselves to you, "Brutal Obsession" is a must-read. S. Massery has once again proven her mastery in delivering a story that lingers in the mind, leaving readers breathless and craving more.

Okay so a lot of opinions about this book. I don’t particularly enjoy this kind of dark romance, way too dark for me, it feels forced amd unrealistic. Some things he does are just unforgivable and she always takes it, nothing is too much, there is no limit and we readers get tired of that because his behavior just keeps escalating. We want to see a heroine that fights back and doesn’t get humiliated and lets it go, not what happens here and I have a feeling it is like this in the whole series, but I have only read this one..
