- Reviewed in the United States on May 13, 2018Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI was given a free copy of this book as part of a zombie book club. I am leaving an honest review.
This book grabbed my attention from the very beginning. It opens five days into a zombie apocalypse, with a mother and her young daughter running from zombies toward what they hope is a safe haven. Then the book goes back to the beginning to tell the story of how they got there.
On a seemingly ordinary day, a mother and her daughter are going about their daily lives when they are suddenly trapped in their car on a bridge during the opening hours of a zombie outbreak. There have been a few news reports in the preceding days of odd behavior and random "terrorist attacks", but nobody seems to have figured out what is really going on.
They are forced to abandon their car and flee through the countryside, all the while being chased by "ferals". In sporadic contact with her family, Liv forms a plan to try to get to a farm outside of town where she can meet up with family members, if she can survive that long.
Relying on her wits and ingenuity, she makes her way across once familiar neighborhoods that are now more like war zones. She meets other survivors along the way, and they help each other through the chaos.
I really enjoyed the way Liv's character developed as the story progressed. She goes from being confused and terrified of everything, to being a strong and confident woman determined to survive and protect her daughter no matter what obstacles she has to face.
There is plenty of zombie mayhem, and the thrills and suspense are off the charts!! There is blood and gore, but also sadness, like when Liv has to face the reality of zombie children.
Overall, I really enjoyed this book and can't wait to read book two!
- Reviewed in the United States on September 4, 2017Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI purchased this book after reading the short story that served as a prequel to Devour. Like another reviewer, I was disappointed when the key character in the prequel did not make an appearance in Devour.
This is a solid story. I thought the plot was strong, the concept very strong. I especially liked that the main character was a woman. In fact, she was a woman just like anyone else, struggling between a job, college and raising a toddler -- and getting by in an unfolding zombie apocalypse. The story is fast-paced action, fast enough that it becomes easy to believe the main character, with a small child in tow, can manage to survive when so many do not.
There were some typos and errors, enough to notice, but not enough to be a problem for me. The story is pretty much straight action, running from zombies, which can be tiring at times. But we do meet other living humans along the way, who add interest to the story.
My main disappointment was finding that the next novel in the series revolves around another character (not the one from the prequel), where we already know what happens. I *did* really want the next novel to be about the main character from the prequel. But it wasn't, and I already know what happens, so I don't think I will be reading that one.
By the way, I was pleased with the ending of this book.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 6, 2018Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis was a good read! There were plenty of times when I thought Liz was really dumb and the baby should have given them up a few more times but, it is a story... :) About Liz though, even though I thought she was dumb at times it made me think how I would really react and what would I do in that situation. Where would my head be?... I really enjoyed? I don't know if that is the word. I was tense a lot waiting to find out what would happen. I can't wait to read the next book in the series, Divided. I now know that it will be a bit nerve wracking so I will be forewarned. There was a lot of action packed into a few days and it was fast paced- even when it wasn't. Treat yourself and give it a read.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 10, 2018Format: KindleVerified PurchaseOk.... this book is absolutely amazing!!! I read a lot of zombie books and this is now one of my favorite series! It is so full of action and suspense that you CANNOT put it down!! I love that Liv kept Elli alive and and the crazy protection Liv takes to make sure she isn’t in harms way. If you can, read Darkest Days first and it kind of gives you a sense of what’s going on but it doesn’t have to be read first. The ending is definitely a cliffhanger but luckily you can jump right to book two. This is a definite must read!!!! I really do hope the series is continued past book two. Thank you for writing such an amazing book RL Blalock and I’m definitely look forward to the second book on the series!!
- Reviewed in the United States on October 18, 2016Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI really enjoyed this story very much, it was a complimentary copy given for a fair and honest review. I don't do spoiler reviews basically I'll let you know a bit about the story and if I enjoyed it or not. Now here we have the main character Liv who is on the run trying to save her young daughter and reach a safe haven, a farm, hopefully to be joined by her family, can she do it, do they make it. Well I suggest you best read it to find out, I highly recommend this book as a very enjoyable read, I like the characters and sadly we lose some on the to the farm. I Hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

5.0 out of 5 stars Devoured this book
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseGive me more! I need! I need! Gimme gimme!
Devour catches you, rips you to shreds and spits you back out, so you can keep reading. This story hits the ground running and dosen't stop running until the end.
Characters are instantly likeable and have no chance at surviving, which makes them even more interesting. The descriptions are sharp and don't hold back.
Chapters are days which works beautifuly.
Read all the way to the end in a few days because I couldn't stop myself.
It's a step in the right direction for the genre.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic read
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis is the second book in the series. It’s much longer than the first so the characters really develop.
The story is non-stop action. Some fantastic ideas - never thought about the armour.
The book ends on a cliff hanger. What does the last sentence mean?
I cannot wait to read the next book.
