Editorial Reviews
From the Author
A few years ago, I decided to write these stories to share with a wider audience the true face of one of the most fascinating sub areas of information security, digital forensics.
I hate to break it to you; digital forensics is not as it is portrayed in television and film. There are no magical programs that can decrypt heavily encrypted data within a few seconds behind some fancy graphics, while a ridiculously good-looking investigator watches on.
The good news is that digital forensics doesn't need to be portrayed this way to be interesting. In real life, the stories of incidents and how investigators untangle them are often much more interesting than the same old stories peddled on the TV. The problem of course, is that for confidentially reasons; those stories are hardly ever shared.
In these stories, I've drawn on real life experiences to create tales that hopefully do justice to the field of digital forensics.
Although the industries, names and settings have changed to protect those who have trusted me to be a part of their investigations, the tools, techniques and incidents described are all very real examples of things that happen every single day in this line of work.
I hope you enjoy reading them.
Also, I am not Parker Foss; he is a much-improved version of me. He always knows the exact correct thing to say, knows exactly where to look and probably drives a better car than I do.
Bastard.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 12, 2017The protagonist Parker Foss is an ingenious mix of your stereotypical private investigator, battle-hardened IT security practitioner, and loveably self-deprecating English bloke. He narrates five investigations where you're not only entertained by the witticisms but learn a little bit about the practice of digital forensics as well. I highly recommend this book to anyone who's interested in cybersecurity, even if you're not technical. Can't wait until this is turned into a BBC series on the telly.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 3, 2018This book is incredible. It did what online cyber security courses have not - made cyber security fascinating and full of life. I will being rereading this frequently and learning quite a lot in the process.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 4, 2018Love it! It gave me insight into the field. However, I take points off for spelling errors.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 30, 2017Mike Sheward is a modern day Joe Friday. He's the Lennie Briscoe of cybercrime. His job is to investigate complex digital crimes. He has to deal with not only the technical details, but the erratic people involved in his cases. While the circumstances of these attacks are crazy, he's always calm and organized, scientific, intuitive, and professional.
If you want to get inside the head of a cyber investigator hell bent on solving interesting cybercrimes, stop reading now and just get this book. And you'll learn a lot about cybercrime along the way. Don't worry if you're not super technical, Mike has done a masterful job of making these mysteries accessible to people without deep technical knowledge. Yet there's enough detail for even career information security folks like me to follow the investigation step by step with Mike.
I read Digital Forensic Diaries on the beach in Bethany, Delaware. I wasn't too sure what to expect, but after the first few pages, I was hooked. What a fun read. It didn't take two pages to realize that this isn't a security book. It's five fascinating crime stories, laced with technical details, crazy people, and suspense.
Each of the five stories starts with Mike getting called in on a new investigation. I won't share any spoilers, but it's like you're working with Mike to figure out what's happened as the details slowly unfold and Mike slowly closes the net. Each story is crazier than the last, and Mike manages to keep the suspense until the very end.
I shared the book with my nephew (13) and my son (18). Both devoured it and then wouldn't shut up about the details of each of the cases. I highly recommend this to anyone who likes mysteries and police procedurals. I dare you to read this book without wanting to switch careers.
Five stars!
- Reviewed in the United States on July 6, 2017Each of the five stories were very entertaining and informative. Educational as well, though I don't think that was the intent of the writer. You could follow along hearing about the different tools he uses and then do research on each to improve the way you worked. Mostly, it was interesting to see his thought process as he methodically moved through scenarios that ultimately led to his conclusions. Even if you're not a security wink this book will entertain you.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 9, 2017I have read each of these books; they are fun reads. Mike does a great job keeping the readers engaged without overwhelming them with the big technical details that involve security. Keep writing, Mike!
