Digital Forensic Diaries: Revenge on the Wire Kindle Edition

4.1 out of 5 stars 24 ratings

Digital forensics is one of the most exciting and challenging areas of the modern day information security field. The Digital Forensics Diaries allow you to follow a digital forensics investigator through the half scientific, half artistic process that leads to cracking cases without any physical evidence. Based on the authors real world experiences, the diaries tell fictionalised versions of security incidents and subsequent investigations. A must read for anyone interested in computer security or the digital forensics field.

In this episode our investigator is called in to assist in the investigation of some strange happenings at a managed services company. A widespread vulnerability is wreaking havoc across the Internet. Is the vulnerability behind the strangeness? Or is something more sinister afoot?

I didn't know what to expect from a short story featuring digital forensics. I enjoyed this peek into a fictionalized, yet quite plausible investigation.
Kudos, Mike! You've included tech tidbits that provoke thought and illustrate how an investigation might progress without belaboring specific commands and syntax.
I confess mild disappointment that the regex to extract usernames wasn't included, but some readers might've wondered how such an egregious typo make it into this impeccably edited story.
(That's attempted humor, folks. It's late Thanksgiving night, I'm full of turkey, and good editing doesn't just happen.)
Nicely done. I'll be reading your other titles. Cheers!

Always something new to learn or relearn in each of these cyber security thrillers. Great work, Mr Sheward; looking forward to the next one!

Great read Mr. Sheward. Often times books of this nature present stories that are literally too fetched; can you say NCIS? I really enjoyed the fact that Mr. Sheward presents a real life scenario and follows up with how the case was solved (in great detail). Excellent! Can't wait to read the next one.

Learning some of these techniques myself. I like to read around the subject for more information and this book helped.
