From the Inside Flap
What does it mean to be a "kinky couple"? Does it mean both partners hit the dungeon every night--or have one in their home? Does it mean wearing a collar? Does it mean a 24/7 BDSM lifestyle? Yes, yes, yes--and no.
The truth is, like so many aspects of sex, "kinky" is in the eye of the beholder. One half of a couple may be kinkier than the other--in fact, those kinds of stories often yield extremely powerful transformations.
If you were to pass some of these couples on the street, you might peg them immediately as a little bit naughty. Others, you'd stroll right by, without any sort of erotic antennae tuning in. Many of them take pains (pun intended) to hide their kink--or exult in the thrill of maybe, possibly--hopefully--getting "found out."
The thrill here, what makes these dates "dirty" in the best sense, is the tension between tops and bottoms, doms (and plenty of dommes!) and subs, those craving control and those who desire nothing more than giving up control. Actually, there's a third category of sub, one who teeters on the edge between giving up and exhorting his or her own control. That fine line is teetered upon perfectly in "Switch," by Mina Murray, when narrator Cass notes: "He smiles, a sly look that does nothing to warm his eyes. That's when I start to get nervous." Keeping a sub on edge is all part of the kinky fun, but Murray makes it clear that this dom's mastery comes from the heart when he tells Cass of her new chains: "'I had them made especially for you. With padded cuffs, to protect that creamy-soft skin of yours. See how much I love you?'"
These couples act out their kink in many ways--some at play parties, some outdoors, some long distance. Some do it with bondage, spanking, service, a corset, a look, a location--for many, their instrument of choice is words. Emily Bingham takes one extremely charged word in "Magic Words" and lets readers know exactly what the prospect of saying it does to her character: "The shame is a scalding tickle that takes over every cell in my body. Looking down at his lap to hide from his gaze, I feel more embarrassed than in any naked-in-front-of-a-crowd nightmare. It's the one word I promised myself I would never say, yet he has managed to make even this taboo titillating, something I want to explore with him. I'm annoyed at myself for being so aroused by this lone, little word."
What is that magic word? You'll have to keep reading to find out. There's a sensual beauty to these stories that I believe will speak to those who practice kink in their lives and those who don't, because in some ways the tenderness, the charge, the power shifting back and forth between partners, transcends kink. It speaks to ideals of worship, wonder, adoration--from both sides. Even the most sadistic men and women whose worlds you're about to enter clearly value those they are asking to give them their bodies, their minds, their words, their beings. They are living out their most vivid fantasies with the person they most cherish. I hope you enjoy their dreams, fantasies and explorations, and that they inspire your own.

I am, as of this writing, seventy-two-years-old and still passionately interested in all things erotic: art, literature, films, and fantasies—not to mention hot, personal interactions when opportunities arise. Although I was led to believe that in my post-menopausal, estrogen deprived life, I would come to prefer travel, cooking, hiking, or gardening, to the allure of intimate encounters—this has fortunately proven to be untrue. My sexual life now spans a half century, and against all odds and aside from age related restrictions imposed by my body, it continues to unfold.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 6, 2015Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseRachel Kramer Bussel has put together an enticing collection of stories that read to me like a thriller—only unlike the thriller genre, no one actually gets hurt. There's a thrust—pun embraced!—in every story, that keeps the reader curious and wanting for more. As someone who isn't drawn to BDSM in the bedroom (but sincerely respects it), I was really impressed with the focus on pleasure, anticipation and respect. I found these elements tantalizing, even when the actual events didn't appeal. I don't think any reader could help feeling turned on by the turn-on! "Dirty Dates" isn't merely for couples, but for anyone seeking more creativity and spice in their life or imagination.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 2, 2022Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseI got this book bc it was suggested for couples looking for "fun, exciting dates". So, I was expecting date ideas. What I got was short stories. Don't get me wrong. I have stacks of smut books, but I wanted was date ideas for my real-life husband who isn't a fairy/wolf/prince. As long as you know what it is going forward, I would recommend.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 10, 2015Format: PaperbackRKB has a long-standing reputation for digging through the slush pile of open submissions to find shining gems for her anthologies and Dirty Dates is no exception.
As with all anthologies, there are some stories that resonate more than others. I am usually drawn to the slice of life stories. Visceral vignettes that pack a serious erotic punch. There are plenty of those but in reading Dirty Dates, I found myself more drawn to the complete stories with a beginning, middle and end. Whole and complete stories wrought out in the span of a few thousand words.
Slowburn by Morgan Sierra is a femdom story told from the male submissive’s point of view. I don’t think that I’ve read a Femdom story told this way and it was a nice change of pace. It pulled no punches on the muddled and conflicting thoughts that tumbled through his mind while involved in a scene with his mistress.
The World in my Pants by Valerie Alexander gives us another dose of femdom with some juicy public humiliation and dirty alley sex. Of all the stories in the book, this is easily my favorite. All the girls crowding around him in the bathroom and writing on him with their makeup was especially fun to read.
Switch by Mina Murray tells the story of a couple reuniting after he’s been away for work. Blindfolded and handcuffed to the radiator in front of a picture window she comes to the realization that this was her fantasy made real.
Justine Elyot’s Baby Steps is a slice of life story about two tired parents and how they keep their sex life hot in the midst of marital monotony. Believe me, this is a lot more heartwarming than it sounds because it’s a wonderful peek into the familiar.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 12, 2016Format: PaperbackThe anthology focuses on couples who combine kink with their romance. Couples in the stories may be casual lovers or committed couples. What they share in common is their hot passion and their very kinky desires and play times. As the editor points out in the introduction to the book, kink levels can vary. Some couples are very open about their BDSM lifestyles, and others do their best to hide it. Some take pride in showing it off, and others take a thrill in wondering when they might get caught. The kink experience is a diverse one, and the stories in this anthology reflect that.
The stories are very good in terms of quality and variety. Like many anthologies, you as a reader may like some stories better than others, but overall I would say that the majority of the stories in these volume are very good, and they are likely to inspire an idea or two for some couples. Kink and BDSM have many flavors and varieties. The ones I do not enjoy as much may be the ones that really get you going, and vice-versa. Part of the fun may be reading to find your favorite stories.
Kramer Bussel always puts out solid work. I must disclose that I received this book for review purposes, and I was very glad I did. I can always count on this editor to make some excellent selections in her anthologies and to deliver a good reading experience. This is one I happily recommend.
