Death of a Courtesan (Riley Rochester Investigates) Kindle Edition
As Riley and Jack delve into the beautiful young victim’s background and the reasons for her fall into prostitution, an increasing number of suspects with compelling reasons for wanting her dead emerge. Riley is astounded to discover that his nemesis, Chief Inspector Danforth, is one of the brothel’s regular visitors. He was there on the night of the murder, spent an hour alone with the victim and must be viewed as a suspect. Riley could be forgiven for revelling in Danforth’s downfall after all the insults he has suffered at the chief inspector’s hands, but his concern is for the reputation of the Detective Department as a whole and so he does all he can to shield Danforth from public derision.
Unsurprised by the depths of depravity some men willingly sink to in order to find gratification, Riley is unprepared for the damage that could be done to the reputation of his own family if he doesn’t get to the truth. But at what cost to his personal ambitions…

About the author

I’m a British author, brought up on the Isle of Wight and share my life with a handsome rescued Spanish Podenco called Markos.
I’ve had over one hundred books published, ranging from Regency romance, (my first love), to contemporary women’s fiction and marine crime mysteries.
When not writing I walk miles, make half-hearted attempts to retain flexibility by attending yoga classes, read other people’s tomes…oh, and I’m on a one woman mission to keep the wine trade profitable!

- Reviewed in the United States on November 10, 2018This book was the second of the series I read, and I liked both very well. A few times, when going over the case, the men seem to be like tape recorders. The exact same words, the same sentences. But the mystery itself was quite well developed, and the characters behave probably like was expected from them at that time. Funny, no phones, no cars, hard to imagine it is only a bit over 100 years ago ! Not really cozy mysteries, but quite close. No dirty language and the graphic kept to a bare minimum.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very enjoyable mystery
1870 London and Detective Inspector Rochester and Sergeant Salter, of Scotland Yard’s Detective Department, are called to the brothel run by a Mrs Cora Sinclair. One of her girls has been found murdered. As the case progresses they learn more of the background of the victim and more suspects come to light.
A very enjoyable well-written mystery. Certainly helped by containing some well-rounded characters.
