Don't Mess With The Ex: A Secret Husband M/M Romance (Rules We Break in Granville Book 2) Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 949 ratings

For years, I've lived by one simple rule: Don't Mess With The Ex.

It was an easy rule to follow when Laurence Kensington III was on the other side of the country.

Now that he's shown up out of the blue to tell me we're still married? Not so much.

I followed my heart into a whirlwind romance with him once, and it ended in a heart-breaking annulment. Or at least, I thought it did. I don't know what to think of the news we're still hitched.

I've vowed to never be so impulsive or reckless again. But when he brings me a proposal that will help me achieve my dreams for Granville *and* refuse his entitled family something they want, I'm once more put to the test.

Laurie is as handsome as I remember, and so damn tempting. His sweet gestures, generous spirit, and open heart make it a challenge to stick to my rule.

But then, maybe messing with the ex wouldn't be all bad. Maybe it's time to write new rules.

Is it really so wrong to follow my heart if my heart was right all along?

Don't Mess With The Ex is Book 2 of Rules We Break, a spin-off series from Games We Play, set in the small, quirky town of Granville, where nosy residents meddle in one another's lives, great friendships are made, and silly innuendos are a way of life.

Couldn't wait to dive into this one. Knew it was gonna be yummy. Loved Laurie's entrance, starting things off with a bang. D.J. never lets us down when it comes to a good love story. It has everything, love, wit, sorry and a good dose of nosey well meaning neighbors... And let's not forget the steamy lovin'❣️ Tuck and Laurie were meant to be together from the very beginning. They deserved a second chance and to stand together this time against the snarky SOB of a grandfather... And of course I just love all our familiar side characters. Another great hit!

I just love the world DJ Jamison has created in Granville and was so glad to be back with the whole town again. This is Tucker and Laurie's story and we pick right back up where book 1 ended with Laurie showing up and announcing he was Tucker's husband for the last 20 years! We then are treated to a slow burn story of sorts about them rediscovering each other and why they fell in love all those years ago. Trust had to be earned back, bonds reformed, and they had to reconnect again. It was so sweet watching them fall in love all over again. This was set against the backdrop of the lovely family and friends in this small town with a heart of gold. Laurie was wonderful and it was great seeing the people of Granville embrace him and his kind heart. Laurie's family drama was always niggling in the background threatening to tear everything apart, but their journey back to each other could not be deterred! Such a lovely small town romance with all the feels, lots of humor, and a wonderful HEA! And all the hints for book 3 were great. I cannot wait for Wes and Beckett's story next!

I would read a technical manual about toilet installation if DJ Jamison wrote it, but fortunately, this book, like all her books, is a glorious slip-slide-melting of sweet and hot and heartbreak and redemption. “Secret marriage that is used as a way to get an inheritance” isn’t a new trope but Laurie and Tuck turn it upside down immediately because 1. Laurie tells Tucker immediately and woos him with the idea of the money being used for Granville 2. Laurie is a soft little marshmallow heart and obviously hurt and dying to have the love of his life back 3. Tucker also never stopped loving Laurie and his grumpy attitude vanished so fast it might as well be made of cotton candy. The mutual pining made me explode into a cloud of glitter and rainbows by the time they finally caved! Add in Laurie’s horrible rich family trying to take Laurie & Tuck down, a wonderful Granville family supporting them, all our old friends, a needy dog, and once again we have a smorgasbord of perfect deliciousness. I worship at the altar of DJ Jamison FOREVER.

I absolutely love the small town romances that D.J. Jamison writes. I fell immediately in love with the town of Granville and all it's residents. Don't Mess With the Ex is another wonderful story set in Granville. Tucker and Laurie got married 20 years ago, but due to Laurie's family, they thought they got their marriage annulled. When Laurie finds out that is not the case, and spurred by an inheritance battle with his family, he arrives in a spectacular way, trying to show Tucker how much he loves him and wants to fight for their relationship.
I loved this second chance romance. Tucker and Laurie's journey was wonderfully done, and Tucker's family and friends are all a joy to see. I appreciated that Tucker and Laurie fought together for each other, with no hesitation.
If you love small town second chance romance, with heart and humor, Don't Mess With the Ex is a perfect read.

This was a really sweet second change romance. Laurie and Tucker are perfect for each other, and I don't think I will ever get enough of Granville's shenanigans! I read through it quickly and enjoyed it, but there wasn't anything that really stood out to me. The whole premise seemed extremely implausible, which made it a bit harder for me to enjoy. I absolutely loved these characters, but the plot wasn't my favorite.

I received an ARC of this book from Gay Book Promotions, and this is my honest review.

I do so love me some Granville. You can't help but fall in love with the meddlesome meddlers who like to meddle. We meet Tucker's husband at the end of book one in an Epic fashion, and book two kicks right off where book one ended. I felt so bad for Laurie, and what could have been, had his family not forced his hand 20 years ago. But it just wasn't meant to be, at the time. They both needed to become their own persons on their own before they could fully be together in a way that would last a lifetime.

I can't wait to read the next installment of this series, it's sure to be a great one.

A well crafted storyline supported by good character development and a plot that wanders but never gets lost. Included is some unusual family dynamics covering both ends of the spectrum for love and tolerance. Ends on a promise for a future HEA.

4.0 out of 5 stars Sweet and humorous second chance romance.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 21, 2023
Humourous second book in the series. Laurie and Tucker were lovely together, despite Tucker's understandable mistrust. It's simply a second chance story, which turns out to be lots of fun and so sweet. I liked that Laurie and Tucker, now that they're older took charge of their own destiny, and dealt with Laurie 's horrible and manipulative family, the way in which they deserved. I also thought that it was realistic that Tucker played hard to get, I felt that his suspicions regarding Laurie's end game were well founded, considering their past. Still, peeps from the previous story get themselves involved, and work together to help the guys fight the good fight against Laurie's family, this was one of my favourite parts of the story. I loved the HEA, it was hard won and Tucker well deserved it 🙂

I received an ARC of this story, which in no way influenced my opinion.
