The Dragil: Broken Magic (Quick Reads Book 2) Kindle Edition

5.0 5.0 out of 5 stars 4 ratings

The Dragil: Broken Magic is a fantasy adventure for the young or young-at-heart. Originally the story was published in the Tendrils collection of short stories, but is available as a stand-alone through Quick Reads. The incredible image of the dragil on the cover is original art by the talented Ian Styer. ©2016

When Willum, an apprentice book maker, has a nasty fall, he loses all of his memories…including the strictures concerning protective magic for the exquisite miniature dragons called Dragilios. Not knowing he is breaking the magic law, and sending the little Dragil, Malle, into deadly peril, he draws the friendly, little dragil.
The moment the picture is finished the protective spell shatters. Her anguished cry as she disappears restores his memory.
Devastated at what he has done and wanting to right the wrong or die trying, Willum undertakes a dangerous quest into the malignant world of the giant leather-winged dragons. Can he find her in time before she is ripped apart and eaten? If he stays too long in that lethal land, he becomes stone.
The hourglass sands are slipping away toward the doom of the boy and the fragile little dragil. Can he save them both?

A Quick Read book is a short story available as a single small book. In both ebook and paper format, it is a perfect small gift or for escaping to another place and reality when you only have a tiny block of spare time.

I was given this book for an honest review. I was so wrapped up in the story of Willum and the little dragil that I finished the book at 2:00 am when I should have been asleep as it was a work night. The anxiety that Willum felt when he needed to save the little dragil was amazingly felt by me, the reader. I was as anxious as he was. It was a wonderful heart-wrenching story told by an author well-known for her "reach out and grab you" tales. A very good read!!

I won a copy of this book some time ago but never read it; however, I did just last night and I really, really enjoyed it. And yes, I feel so strongly about this story that it honestly rates 5 stars.

This short story follows a young book/paper-making apprentice, Willum, a hard working young man who doesn't quite fit in because he really excels at, and loves, his chosen career; he is a skilled artist in the making. Sadly, Willum takes a horrendous fall and hovers near death. (I felt really heartbroken for him.)

Here is where the story gets quite fascinating. While Willum lay unconscious, he sees a beautiful yet unbelievable little butterfly. He figures he must be dreaming. It changes color and he soon realizes it is a little dragon; a Dragil. He finds out it is not a dream, or some mythical creature, but a part of his world.

I will stop here because I do not want to give away of the wonderfully sweet parts of the well written and very creative story. Nor do I want give away any of the heart stopping or heart breaking results of Willum's actions and those of the characters around him.

I recommend this to all readers and especially to Moms and Dads looking for a new style fairy tale to read to their children. Note: Parents, you may after ad-lib a few spots but it is a story i would have read to my kids.

This was another brilliant short story by Holly Barbo! This one was a genre I'm new to, fantasy adventure, and I'm so glad I had this amazing adventure to go on as my beginner entrance to the genre. Willum and his perilous yet seemingly quick journey to right the wrongs he did was so much fun! Lord of the Rings meets The Dark Crystal in my opinion!

I was given this book as a gift. The author knows how to get us into the action. I know that when a book transports me to the scene of the action, I want to read more. This was a fun, creative short story. When the book was finished, I wanted more. Excellent read
