Dragon Bones (The Dragonwalker Book 1) Kindle Edition
A war fought a thousand years ago removed the destructive threat of dragons, allowing fire mages to use the magic stored within their bones to protect the empire for a millennium. The empire has known a fragile peace, held together by that ancient magic.
Fes has always longed for stability. Raised within the slums of the empire, taught to steal and hurt others to make his way, when he’s discovered by the emperor’s chief fire mage, he’s given a chance to use his particular gift for gathering lost dragon relics to become something more.
An encounter with a priest in possession of a dragon bone reveals the existence of a new power that threatens to return the long dead dragons to the world. Chased by the dangerous enemies, Fes travels into the bleak lands of the Dragon Plains before others can reach it. If he survives, what he discovers means the continued safety of the empire and a promise of wealth and freedom. If he fails, the deadly power of the dragons might return.
Yet, with a growing and unexplainable magic within him, it’s the promise of understanding who he truly is that might be the most valuable, only it’s the same power that leaves him with questions some within the empire don’t want answered.
Dragon Bones is the exciting first book in an epic new fantasy series.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 22, 2023What a great storyline. Exciting from start to finish and the author knows how to bring the characters alive. A young man made a life of stealing for people and getting paid.
Fes had a hard life and stole to eat as did his friend Alison. Then Fes was hired to find dragon bones and his life forever changed. Vivid imagination storytelling! Loved it.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 31, 2018It is like most Holmberg books, interesting and a good story. I read for escape from a stressful job. This book and most of DK Holmberg's books are very good for that purpose. I enjoyed it and will continue to read the rest of the series. Not that I'm a literature editor, but i did notice a few grammar mistakes, (they have to be bad for me to see them). Perhaps Mr. Holmberg should have the editor or someone proof read them a little closer. Having said that, they really didn't detract from the story.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 29, 2021A thousand years ago there were dragons. But in some cataclysmic surge these dragons were killed and their bones spread over the dragon plains, causing a desolate rocky desert to form where nothing grows and very little can survive for very long.
And it is here that Fes agrees to go very a very large sum of money in search of a dragon relic. Avery powerful one.
But after a thousand years animosities of the past remained, however distorted in the passage of time.
The lust of power also claims an interest as mercenenaries, rebels and the power hungry converge in another orgy of death dealing unlike anything witnessed in a thousand years.
Dragon Bones is a powerful epic fantasy that where the world building in a strange way really reminds me a lot of the iconic world of Dune by Frank Herbert. A very compelling saga indeed.
Enjoy.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 9, 2020This author is simply amazing. I am in awe of his ability to build a character.
If you love reading about hero's, magic and dragons, this is one series you cannot put down. I have only read the first book of this series and am so enjoying it I had to buy all in this series. I am hooked I cannot wait to see what happens next.
I am proud to say that I own every one of D.K.Holmbergs books.
Please never stop writing. You are amazing!
- Reviewed in the United States on May 24, 2023Dk hS done it again. I am now hooked on his Dragon Bones series.
I will be entertained. More dragons inmy future,
- Reviewed in the United States on September 14, 2020The storyline is the best one I have read in a long time.
The male lead is someone who does whatever he can to survive.
He goes on a journey, that changes him. He meets a man and his daughter that makes him start thinking of who he is.
This book held my interest from the first to last page.
It is a story that reminds me of the Dune series, in some aspects, of starting to learn who and what he is.
I look forward to reading the next book!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 27, 2021The MC is more scoundrel and wild card than a true Hero. He starts out as a clear thief and stumbles into a new profession of paid "Item acquisition specialist", which just means he's a sponsored thief. Worse, the world is one where the world-building is rather opaque at the start, so the first act doesn't appear to come together of have any purpose other than to push the MC into certain plot threads.
And that is probably the biggest flaw here. The MC is not very active, and when pushed into a plot thread, still is far too passive. He needs to show some agency early, and doesn't. By the time he is tricked into joining the big quest at the start of Act 2, I had mentally checked out.
Its not a bad tale, and there is a lot of imagination showing, but the MC is poorly introduced, and that made the story drag out. It's 3 star level writing.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 25, 2021What a wonderful book. I like that Dragons are gone but they can still use artifacts that are from Dragons for power unless you are born from the area of dragons. It is the start of a great new adventure. Fezarn what a strange name. He finds out it was the name of a great dragon once, but Fez is not interested in that he just wants to survive and make money since he lost his parents and even his brother. He finds out he is so much more.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Story
Fes collected dragon bones and other artifacts related to the dragons that used to roam the countryside and apparently created some havoc among people who lived and worked here. The man he worked for is a fire mage and these bones help him to create his magic fire. Fes (Fezarn) was a poor lad who needed the money from selling the dragon bones to live and eat. Fes had a friend who often followed him when he was doing a job for Horus, or one of the other mages he knew, named Alison. We are introduced to both of them right away. Horus comes up with a job for Fes that will take him out of the city and away from the marketplace that he knows so well. The promise is that he will be well paid for the job. He is to find an artifact called a dragon's heart and bring it back. This story is about that adventure away from his usual haunts. There is magic. There is also a lot of adventure in the trip, not all of it is fun. There are fire mages and soldiers following him and adventures in villages that have been abandoned following the demise and disappearance of the dragons. Not all of the spellbinding happens in the story. It is so well written that I could not stop reading. The adventures that Fes and Alison share are dramatic, magical and hard to believe. It is a great story all the way to its magical conclusion. I loved the story right up to its ending . It is a very entertaining read.
