The Dragonfly Delivery Company: (A STEAMPUNK ADVENTURE) (The Hammersmyth Tales Book 2) Kindle Edition

4.6 out of 5 stars 32 ratings

Pirates rule the skies, robbing ships at will

They're ruthless, efficient, and surprisingly well informed. There's a rat in the Air Courier's Guild, and to catch a rat you need a rat catcher. You need Dexter and Sinister.

Up in the air and out of their depth, John and Dexter will have to watch their backs on this one. The Guild might be on their side but the captains sure aren't. They have secrets to keep, secrets that could get a man killed, and it's a long way down for those who stick their noses in where they don't belong. And their cats too, if they're not careful!

With airship battles over the English lakes, marauding vegan chefs, and the return of everyone's favourite muscle for hire, Agnes Goodenough, The Dragonfly Delivery Company is a tale of heroism and high adventure, full of fun, laughs, and the sort of steam-powered shenanigans everyone can enjoy.

"A delightful and incredibly fun book."

Hello there, and welcome. So glad you could stop by.

If you like your crime cosy, your airships antiquated, and your talking cats with a dash of sarcasm, you've come to the right place.

I am a writer of steampunk, fantasy, crime, plus whatever else takes my fancy. I don't do serious, there's enough serious in the world, but I do do important (and no, I'm not above laughing at the phrase "do do" either). Let me put it this way, if you're a Terry Pratchett fan we're going to get along swimmingly.

The unlikely duo of John Sinister and Dexter finds themselves in a whole new adventure. Airships have been suffering at the hands of Sky Pirates. More so than ever in the past. The detecting duo is promptly hired to find out why this is happening. They are accompanied by Agnes Goodenough, the formidable bouncer that you might recall from the first book. Their quest to find out what's going on takes them away from the familiar surroundings of Hammersmith, London, up north through the country. Along the way they have to deal with being on an airship, fending off Sky Pirates and much, much more.
The characters are engaging and so is the scenery. If you fancy a nice mystery, set in a Steampunk atmosphere, then you can't go wrong with this one. I do recommend reading the first book as well, since it sets up a lot of the background to this book. It can however be read as a standalone book, but I do feel having read the first book in the series adds to the experience.
I would classify this as a young adults (YA) book, but I thoroughly enjoyed it at the tender age of 51.

This was even more enjoyable than the first in the series and I'll be reading the rest of them as soon as possible.

4.0 out of 5 stars Well worth reading

So, the cat inherited it all. All of Chard Mechanical that is, the largest mechanical business in the world. Dexter, the cat, also seems to have attached himself to John Sinister. When asked by his solicitor if he is capable of independent thought, Dexter replies “As much as either one of you, and probably more than this numpty.” Meaning Sinister of course.

That pretty much sets the tone for the relationship throughout.

Dexter and Sinister are the most famous detecting agents in Hammersmyth. Possibly the only detecting agents in Hammersmyth, but that’s beside the point when the Venerable Society of Airship Owners, Sky Captains, and Itinerant Washerwomen come calling.

Apparently sky pirates are attacking delivery ships, and the Venerable Society wants to know how the pirates know so much about, so John and Dexter, and (thank goodness) Agnes Goodenough head north with Captain Tonbo and her crew in the Dragonfly.
In the Lake District, they find all sorts, like Billy who does turn out to be exactly who one expects, but they lose Dexter. There again Dexter is a lot better at looking after himself than Sinister is.

For steampunkers there are airships and pirates and fun gadgets. For all readers there is a likable, diverse, hardworking and not-all-they-seem populace.

While this book is highly enjoyable and very readable, there’s not much detecting going on. In this John Sinister is rather like Indiana in “Raiders of the Lost Arc”. We follow him, we love him, but he makes no difference to the outcome. Well okay, that might be a bit of harsh on poor John, he does come up with the plan that saves the day at the end of the book, but he doesn’t really do the investigating. Dexter grows more than Jon, and not overly sure what Agnes is doing choosing the way she does at the end. Maybe we’ll understand that better in the next instalment.

Perhaps not as good as book one, but I’d still mark this one as well worth reading.

4.0 out of 5 stars A cracking second book

This isn't quite as good as Keith's first book, the central mystery not being as much to my taste as a nice murder, but it's far from a difficult second album populated as it is with likeable characters and imaginative world buildIng. Very much looking forward to his third book Attack Mars
