Dundee Cake Deception: Albert Smith's Culinary Capers Recipe 8 Kindle Edition
Snoozing on the train ride into Dundee, a horrified scream tears both Albert and Rex from their dreams and back to reality …
… where they discover a woman has just witnessed a murder. It would be easy to dismiss her claim; she saw something in the window of a house as the train went by, but when there are dangerous men waiting for her at Dundee station, Albert has to accept she might be onto something.
With the Gastrothief trail gone cold, Albert and Rex are in Dundee to sample the famous cake and learn how to make it. That might happen, but stepping in to defend the woman on the train, they soon find themselves embroiled in something far more sinister than they could have imagined.
Baking. It can get a guy killed.

About the author

When Steve Higgs wrote his debut novel, Paranormal Nonsense, he was a captain in the British Army. He would like to pretend that he had one of those careers that must be blacked out and generally denied by the government, and that he has to change his name and move constantly because he is still on the watch list in several countries. In truth, though, he started out as a mechanic - not like Jason Statham in the film by that name, sneaking around as a hitman, but more like one of those sleazy guys who charges a fortune and keeps your car for a week even though the only thing you went in for was a squeaky door hinge.
At school, he was largely disinterested in all subjects except creative writing, for which he won his first prize at the age of ten. However, calling it the first prize he won suggests that there were other prizes, which is not the case. Awards may yet come, but in the meantime, he enjoys writing mystery and thriller novels and claims to have more than a hundred books forming a restless queue in his mind because they are desperate to be written.
Now retired from the military, he lives in southeast England with a duo of lazy sausage dogs. Surrounded by rolling hills, brooding castles, and vineyards, he doubts he'll ever leave, the beer is just too good.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 9, 2025I had tears streaming my face from laughing at the capers of Rex the dog and Albert. The mystery to be solved is extremely unexpected and keeps you on the edge of your seat. Well done!
- Reviewed in the United States on September 22, 2024A very fun read, I have enjoyed this adventure with Albert & Rex, although the book is missing its page numbers, making it a bit difficult to make sure I have not skipped a page when usually I do that by making sure I’m on the following page number. I also like to know how far along I am, how many more pages I have to read…it’s odd to not have page numbers, I’m not sure I have ever read a book without them.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 31, 2023Albert Smith, retired chief inspector of police, and Rex Harrison, washed out police dog, team up again to solve crimes in rural Great Britain. This is a perfect bed time mystery so one can go to sleep with a smile. Steve Higgs writes at least 3 series and all are different and easy. Higgs could be the perfect author for young readers just starting out. Enjoy!
- Reviewed in the United States on May 3, 2025I really like how the storylines intersect and blend. This is done very gracefully and not intrusive to the story. Again well developed characters and an unexpected twist. Great easy read, entertaining and just fun to run with Albert and Rex.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 25, 2025Rex and Albert are delightful in this installment or the Culinary Capers series. They meet new and interesting people and animals and we learn about new foods.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 28, 2021Another splendid tale about Albert and Rex's culinary adventures. Albert helps out a distressed fellow rain passenger and Rex has become a canine legend which comes in handy for the end of this story. The story had a swift pace with quaint characters to enjoy.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 6, 2024I enjoy this series very much. Always a fun read. Funny thing is, this book has no page numbers.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 20, 2024I love the story, BUT, the second to the last pages have the print missing for most and partial paragraphs! I am unable to return it due to window for return closed on Nov.1. Note to self, check through the rest of the series for the same issue before adding to my stack of books to read!

5.0 out of 5 stars Can’t wait for #9
Each story in the series is better than the last. Love the interaction between Rex and his human and the introduction of Chuckles, well, you have to read it to find out how funny Chuckles is. Keep up the good work Steve.

4.0 out of 5 stars Talking Animals
I like Steve Higgs work but this goes too far. I was leery of trying Albert and Rex's stories because my first introduction to them was the short story Hellcat. I do believe that animals think and feel but talking to each other and the concepts he puts into their mouths is too much. I liked the first few of these books but it has been getting worse in these last two.
