They call it the Over City. A sprawling, once-thriving metropolis devastated by a mysterious calamity. But these streets are far from abandoned. An undead circus trawls the ruins. Murdered prostitutes rain from the sky. An ancient spell is finally ready to reveal its dark purpose.

Carl still has no pants.

Lots of fun!
5 out of 5 stars
Lots of fun!
While book 1 introduced a bunch of new ideas and characters, book 2 is more of the same. Not quite as exciting and book 2 is the thinnest of all 6 books at just 351 pages. Book 3 is over 500 pages, for example. I am really enjoying this series and I appreciate the humor and various game references (dungeons and dragons, video games, etc...) Book 1 covered floors 1 and 2. Book 2 covers floor three, so I have to assume the next book starts and ends with floor 4, etc... for the books out now. I do hope this is made into a cartoon, animated series, or TV series. I also think a company could make a game about this book about a game. Meta! My previous favorite and recent(ish) sci-fi books are Ready Player One (Ernest Cline) and The Martian (Andy Weir). If you like those books, you will like this series and vise versa. While I did feel book 2 wasn't quite the exciting page turner as book 1, I still thoroughly enjoyed it and I have already purchased all six books! Now they are going to be released in hardback form (they have never offered these books in hardback form until now) and they are due out this fall 2024. I think these books are worthy of hardback collection status. They are that good! It's rare I find a sci-fi book I like, so this makes me happy and enthusiastic to recommend it!

"Dungeon Crawler Carl: Carl's Doomsday Scenario" is a thrilling continuation of Matt Dinniman's unique and highly imaginative series. This installment takes the chaotic, hilarious, and suspenseful energy of the first book and cranks it up a notch. The stakes are higher, the challenges more absurdly inventive, and the characters—both new and returning—shine with depth and personality. The dynamic between Carl and Donut remains a highlight, blending humor and heart in the midst of relentless action. Fans of dark humor, clever world-building, and high-stakes dungeon crawling will find themselves thoroughly engrossed. It's a rollercoaster of emotions, with moments of levity seamlessly balanced by gripping tension and poignant depth. A must-read for fans of the genre

This book was exciting, offered new directions for the characters but has the same fast pace action as the first. Level 3 has some big challenges and now quests are optional. I had a blast reading this one with the clever and quirky prose, just enough character development. If you like the first then you'll like this one!

This could have been a few more chapters from the first book, meaning that you shouldn’t expect something spectacularly different.
Did you enjoy book 1? Then you will have fun reading this too.

The good news is that while the first book had a lot of explaining to do and some tedious parts, this one did not have any really boring parts.

The issue with those books is mainly the fact that the protagonists are not really in any danger. You know they are not going to die or get mutilated this early and it’s hard for the writer to provide a sense of urgency or dread.
The stakes are low, so it’s not easy to keep interest.
I can’t say I did not want to read this, on the contrary I read it in a day, but still, it’s a very chill read.

So far, there is small tweaks on the protagonists’ personalities. The cat is quite unique (turning towards a more generic personality unfortunately) and Carl is as generic as it gets.
It’s not that I expected more, but I’m just saying.

The story again is not super deep. There are ties to the future being presented and some very mild mystery. The main focus is the present and having a good time while reading this with a funny prose. I did not really laugh but it puts you in a happy mood.

I am giving this one 4 stars because I enjoyed reading this. It’s not a masterpiece, however you will have fun and that matters!

Man,oh man, is this series continuing the roller coaster ride of fun. Not sure I can say more than my first review other than make sure you start with first book so you bond with the characters.
Oh, and I guess I can repeat what I said from my review of the first book because my feelings haven’t changed.

“Didn’t know what to expect when I started this series, but, oh my!, did I make the right choice in picking it up.
Hugely entertaining. Lots of story twists. Great depth. Emotional attachment to the characters. All of the things you want in a story.
To bad work gets in the way of my reading this new found addiction.
I hope everyone else looking at this review gets the same amount of pleasure when they dive in to the series.”

I wish I could swear on here, because it's hard to summarize how amazing this series is without the emphasis of the f bomb. This series is fbombing amazing. Matt Dinniman is one of the most creative authors I've had the pleasure of reading. I have argued that he's the Tolkien of our generation. He has an amazing ability to create a world that's inticing, thrilling, sad, hilarious and fbombing weird. I have often found myself obsessed with books, but this series has taken it to a new level. If you're thinking to yourself "I can't decide if it's worth the read" I'm telling you now that it is, just do yourself a favor and get it, and the audiobook because Jeff Hays is one of the most talented narrators I've heard, and I listen to audiobooks for twelve hours a day at work. Matt, I expect you to uphold your promise at the end of books one and two.

Another really fun read! So many hilarious and heartfelt moments. I’ve come to really love the dynamic between Carl and Donut and am so terrified of anything bad happening to them. Mongo is also so amazing. Just a fantastic addition to the team and makes me also want a pet Velociraptor. Starting book 3 soon and can’t wait to see what the fourth floor holds.

I love reading these books (and listening, the audiobooks are on a level I've never heard before!). LitRPG can sometimes be a chore, overly sexual, boring, or trying too hard, but these books suffer no such shortcomings. They’re so deftly written, so well-rounded, that the idea of a talking cat feels like just another Tuesday in the dungeon.

The overarching plot is expertly woven with the tangents of quests and relationships, making every diversion feel welcome. The language is natural and easy to read, while the technical aspects of the dungeon’s "features" are brilliant nods to gaming and pop culture at large. I'm absolutely devouring these books at an alarming rate, and I’m already worried that I’ll reach book seven too soon, then wonder what the hell I’m going to do with myself until the next one.

Book two takes everything great about the first and dials it up to even funnier and more extreme lengthgs and I’m absolutely here for it. It never feels schlocky, and the humor never gets cringey, even when it’s trying to. Love, love, love these books, and I need more people to read them!

It's only the second book of the series but I just KNOW I'll love the rest. It's well paced, the narrative is good and the plot twists keep you reading. I finished the book in about 3 days.

I'm in love with the series. You should really give it a try.
