The Dungeon Anarchist's Cookbook: Dungeon Crawler Carl Book 3 Kindle Edition

4.7 out of 5 stars 17,759 ratings

Welcome to the Gun Show!

The top ten list is populated. The sponsorship program is open. The difficulty is ramping up. The first three floors were nothing compared to what Carl and Donut now face.

The Iron Tangle. An impossibly-complicated subway system built out of the world's subterranean railway systems, all combined and then tied together into a knot. Up is down. Down is up. Close is far. The cars are filled with monsters, the railway stations are less than safe, and the exit is always just a few stops away.

But there is hope. For the first time, the crawlers are all working together. The loot is better than ever. And the secret to unraveling it all may be hidden in the pages of a seemingly-useless book. Welcome, crawlers. Welcome to the fourth floor of the dungeon.

Praise for Dungeon Crawler Carl

“Fresh. Creative. Hilarious. I'm obsessed…Princess Donut is my queen.” – Actor, producer and
New York Times bestselling author Felicia Day

"I don't always say nice things about a book just because the writer has compromising pictures of me engaging in some very complicated international crimes, but when I do, I say them about Matt Dinniman's
Dungeon Crawler Carl! Also, this series has no goddamn business burying so much depth and emotion and complexity under its bawdy, gory surface, but it does so anyway. What a wild-ass and unexpected delight." – New York Times bestselling author Scott Lynch

"If there's a better LitRPG than
Dungeon Crawler Carl, I haven't read it." - Shirtaloon, author of He Who Fights Monsters

Dungeon Crawler Carl is the best start to a series I’ve read this year. I wish I’d tried it sooner.” – Will Wight, author of the Cradle series

I first learned about this series on Reddit, then was loaned the first book by a friend who told me he was sucked in and immediately bought every book in the series. Before I had a chance to start reading, my roommate picked it up just to check it out and never put it down. When it was my turn to start reading, I was barely a third of the way through before I told my husband he would love the book too. We’ve recommended it to several friends who are reading the series as well. And you, Amazon Review Browser, should definitely and totally 100% read this series without delay!

Now, on to Book 3: I’m not kidding when I tell you that I gasped out loud on several occasions while reading. Of course, I laugh out loud all the time during the series, and so does my husband while he’s reading. We bought the hardcover versions while reading the first book, and the guys were taking too long to finish (I read fast), so I finally just signed up for Kindle Unlimited so I could read it at the same time (and since the next releases of the back catalog are staggered and I just can’t wait for them—I’m addicted!), so we read this one at the same time and would laugh about the jokes together. But this book isn’t just funny. It’s exciting. It’s dramatic. It’s inspiring.

The breakneck pace keeps tensions high and I’m always on the edge of my seat, pages turning in a flurry as I watch Carl, Donut and Katia fight to survive and help others escape the ever-increasing dangers of the dungeon. The stakes were high in this book (of course), but the external forces were matched by interpersonal drama between the crawlers which gave us some great surprises. The character development is impressive given how the action is usually center stage. And the story keeps pulling back the curtain on the conspiracies and intergalactic drama going on behind the scenes of the Crawl that I can’t wait to see more of.

No spoilers here, folks, just go read the books already. You won’t be disappointed. If you want a true adventure you cannot put down, this series is it, and this book is a great addition to the line. I am going to start the next book immediately. They are not going to break Carl, just like Matt Dinniman won’t break his streak of incredible storytelling. Glurp, glurp, m*thaf*ckas!

Making each dungeon level a different theme is a smart way to present the story. It certainly keeps things fresh, keeps the reader on their toes along with the crawlers, gives you something to look forward to, and, if there's a level you weren't a big fan of, you won't see it again.

I probably won't miss the Tangle very much even though it was vividly drawn in my head, but I'm glad I went along for the ride. I never really fully understood how it worked, but as the author's note in the front of the book explains, it's not necessary to fully understand how the tracks and train lines work. I know someone who would just hate that and not be able to get through the book if she didn't get it, so there are bound to be other readers who will feel the same way. I just hope they are a very small minority because if you made it this far, how could you simply stop now?

The complexity and author's warning do make me wonder why Dinniman left it that way, but it clearly makes sense to him and I imagine it would make more sense to me the second time through.

THE DUNGEON ANARCHIST'S COOKBOOK did not have the balls-out, non-stop action I may have expected. In fact, the first hundred or so pages were rather sedate by the standards of the first two DUNGEON CRAWLER CARL books. It's a new book, a new level in the game. In many ways it's a reset.

I also think Dinniman does an excellent job at taking his time with his prose but not giving you excessive detail. (A quick comparison: I recently read Thomas Harris's HANNIBAL and there were many instances where I stopped and looked at a passage that was so out of place in style or in its redundancy that it completely brought me out of the story, which was not all that great to start with. He should have set it in a subterranean hellscape populated with demons and whatnot.)

There are plenty of surprises and portents revealed along the way. There's also plenty of blood and gore. And I do mean plenty. But I detected a shift in the tone of this book. There was a lot more character development. This is due to the nature of the fourth level being more of a grind for much of the book: people get into a rhythm, things become rote so you can go on autopilot and have time to focus on other stuff.

Carl has been building quite a reputation for himself: he's crazy, bloodthirsty, too reactionary, untrustworthy. Even those crawlers he has encountered before and get along with him are somewhat wary of him.

But I think they're all wrong. I think Carl is a quiet genius. And he internalizes almost everything while he keeps getting angrier and angrier. And if this book were not in a first person (limited, I dare say) perspective, I don't think it would play nearly as well. He's still figuring out the details, but I think his plan to shove it down someone's throat is well underway. The payoff is bound to be...explosive. And messy.

I'm not usually that into book series. I certainly read a number of them, but I'm more typically partial to standalone books. However, I am totally into this series now, and I don't think I've anticipated the next book in a series like this since I read THE DARK TOWER series twenty-ish years ago.

Is it a contradiction that the DUNGEON CRAWLER CARL series can simultaneously quicken my pulse and make me feel like I've sunken into a massive, soft, warm cushion?

I was able to order and read THE DUNGEON ANARCHIST'S COOKBOOK in paperback before the ebook became available. (I know. I still occasionally buy CDs.) So, while this may be the first review on here of this book, it definitely won't be the most insightful, but I do want to support the book in this fashion as well.

I was telling a coworker about this particular book because he's a railfan (it's actually a thing) and I thought it might pique his interest, but he gave me the same look I give him when he talks about trains, so that was fun. If this series was 10% less weird I bet it would appeal to 100% more people, but I would also bet that magic charm it holds me with so tightly would be much weaker. That's my way of saying Book 4 is coming in July and that can't get here too soon.

Definitely not enough swearing. More swearing would definitely improve this series. Swearing is the surest sign of a creative mind and is the core element of intellect and a colorful diverse vocabulary. Holy cow do I love all the cussing. Keep on cussin’ Matt!

Now that I've finished at this point the current releases, Books 1-7, I wanted to come back and give a solid review of the books as a whole.

This series has made me a reader again. I got a Kindle back in Nov of 2024, and I read some titles here and there, and found my Kindle going unused maybe after this first month. It was a Nerd/Geek FB group that I follow mentioned this series AND IT'S A MUST READ. So i took a chance and in about a month and a half later, I read the 7 books in this series, which is probably more than I've read in the last few years combined. This series gave me back my spark for reading, and I can't wait to literally see what happens next. I don't know if Matt reads all the reviews but thank you Matt for getting that spark back.

Matt's vision of his world that Carl finds himself in is so tactile by his descriptions you can almost experience everything happening as you read the pages. I found myself so involved with the characters, I even supplemented some of my reading with the audio books while I commuted to the office.
