"Behind even a great (sometimes, noisy, fractious) man, there is often a quietly strong woman.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 23, 2016This collection is not going to appeal to everyone. Most of the stories are about war and loss - and those left behind. The location, the time and the characters may change, but the effects don’t. As long as those in positions of power do not learn from history, then the rest of us are doomed to fall victim to the repeating devastation.
The stories are well written and come from a variety of viewpoints, showing the writer’s versatility in creating and maintaining characters. With hindsight, you know what’s going to happen. But put yourself in the character’s position - and they had no idea.
The last couple of stories are about potential loss - from the character’s own doings.
It’s probably best to take it one story at a time. When dealing with stories that contain similar themes, it’s too easy to let them fall into each other and lose their essence.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 26, 2016Beautifully written, compellingly melancholic, each one of these stories, whether set in Africa, Afghanistan, Edinburgh or Belfast, delves deep into human emotion and gives a tantalising glimpse into a broader world, an ample demonstration that the author is not bound by historical fiction but has a clear contemporary view, too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Engrossing read.
Variety of different scenarios.
Many stories prick the conscience and tug at the heartstrings.

5.0 out of 5 stars After the dust has settled
You could call this a collection scattered with war stories, I’d prefer to call them deepest love stories as amidst the horror and the tragedy of wars and upheavals, there filters love.
And from the opening 6-word sentence, I knew I was in for a journey. A journey through love and war and memory dredging. This is fiction that is character-driven without a stop for breath. That draws on reality without a doubt.
It would be wrong to go into the detail of each story in this collection, but I can’t help but wax lyrical about the talent and craft of this storyteller. I read the collection twice (the first time at full throttle and the second, leisurely with wine.)
So I experienced the hardship of refugeeism, of survival against all odds. Felt the love between a war-time young pilot and his mother told in a remarkable epistolary style. Explored an earlier life in such acute detail, I could still smell the lavender polish and see the pink and yellow Battenberg long after I closed the final page.
There are stories of the strength of women, the smells of seaweed, the unmistakable whirring of crickets, of happy solutions for characters with insurmountable problems.
Let Skea take you to Afghanistan, let her have you fill the skin and mind of a ten-year-old girl. Let her take you to the impossible and improbable with such believability that can only come from excellent writing. Let her make you smile. Make you see the violet ink. Make you cry. She did me.
Don’t forget to read it more than once.

5.0 out of 5 stars Small and perfect
I picked up 'Dust Blowing' as I was immersed in studying Cabinet makers in 17th Century Holland. It was a time in when the Dutch guilds created miniature cabinets and wardrobes - with perfect hinges and drawers, to display their skill to customers. And reading Ms. Skea's stories struck me as though I held something like this in my hands, something perfectly formed. A chance to experience a master craftsman at work!

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautifully written and varied short stories
I had read .and enjoyed Margaret Skea's 2 historic novels and expected a similar style from this book of short stories. I couldn't have been more wrong. Each one is a beautifully crafted piece;each one quite different in location, style and subject. I enjoyed each one, was moved to sadness and laughter. It is a great Kindle deal !
