I'm everywhere and nowhere. And I own nothing and everything. Kindle Edition

I lived out of a backpack for the past 7 years. This is my story...

I've lived in more places than I can remember. I lived and worked in Shanghai, New York, Berlin, Bangkok, Munich and a few more places, not including the dozens of places I've stayed at for just a few days or weeks. While writing these lines I'm in a small town in Malaysia.

I've basically lived out of a backpack for the past seven years. And the longer I'm doing this, the less stuff I need. Right now I carry less than 10 items around with me in a carry on backpack that weighs less than 10kg.

I go wherever I want to go. I currently spend less than $800 a month. Including everything. My most precious possession is a $300 Acer laptop.

I've started a clothing company in China, for the Chinese market, which failed miserably.

I've launched more than 10 websites, some of them made some money, some of them didn't. I shut down all of them.

I've written seven books (this is my eighth). None of them was a bestseller.

I write a blog where I published more than 500 articles so far. I've more than 100,000 monthly readers spread across multiple platforms.

I'm by no means successful. Or rich. But I have more than enough. By all means. I have access to everything I need. And I can buy and afford everything I need.

I'm not a minimalist. Or a digital nomad. Or an entrepreneur. Or a blogger. Or an author.

I'm mostly just trying to be myself. I'm trying to be myself in a world where it gets harder and harder every single day to just be yourself.

It's not always been easy. As a matter of fact it's probably been hard more often than it's been easy.

But every single day of struggle and doubt has been worth it. Being yourself and creating your own life instead of just living a life is always worth the struggle.

This is my story. This is what I've learned about life, myself and the world around me.

I'm everywhere and nowhere. And I own nothing and everything...

One of the most inspiring books I've read in a while, because it's written in a relatable, authentic way. Too many authors try to turn themselves into gurus. I'm guilty of this too. Yann Girard doesn't try to be a guru here; he simply expresses himself, and through that expression comes many dynamic, pragmatic modes of thinking and doing. In the book, he claims to only give one actionable piece of advice to his readers, and yet this book has already inspired me to take more action than the last five books I've read combined (including books by people who think of themselves as and/or are looked up to as gurus). I'll definitely be keeping an eye out for Yann Girard's future projects.

Really interesting this book. No BS. Straight to the point. If you are looking for answers, this book is for you. If you're looking for willpower, you need to go further and after finding that willpower will not give you the answers you are looking for, you may come back to this book.

Yann delivers the truth on what it is to explore the circular process of life. In this book, there is contradiction, realness, and pragmatic observation of how things are. Yann is engaged in the practice of what we might all aspire to: the expression of who we really are, and living that. Anyone who chooses to create a life, rather than accept one, should consider reading this material. Yann has some helpful, authoritative, things to say, and he wants for you what you want for you. Read.

"You can do whatever you enjoy doing right now and right here." Is a central challenge to Yann Girard's new book, drawing on plenty of examples from his life and experience and providing plentiful tips and nuggets of wisdom to help make it happen.
It's specifically not about (just) following your dreams and establishing a passive income. In fact, Yann has some choice words about the industries designed to push those messages. Instead, he provides practical thoughts about working a job, building momentum, supporting others and occasionally staying with your mom on the route to making the most of your life.

Btw, I don't give 5 star reviews really unless it's one of the best things in the world to me at the moment. It's a pretty high bar.
Besides, I tend to avoid the 5 and 1 star reviews myself as they mostly seem sycophantic or based on some personal animosity - but that's me!

Practical advises. BS in. BS out.
You'll never be on top, if you keep surrounding yourself, with negative people and job you do not love. It drains your energy.

I'm rating 5 stars for the essence. For the ideas in this book. For the stories and their meaning. And what they stand for.

So, two sides to this - PROs and CONs - for each of the 3: essence, form, author. And then, the differentiator. :) (I like structure. So, what?!)

    PROs
    1) From line to line it's genuinely and delicately raw. I love raw, for Yann seems brave and strong enough to spill his guts out there. (part of it, at least) More than that, he encourages readers that they can do the same. That's refreshing.
I felt called out a few times ("to be able to find your strengths you’ve gotta look at your weaknesses first."), I was gently asked a couple of the tough questions ("Most people have no clue about how to create something out of nothing."), and put a mirror in my face till I was ready to see my reflection ("If you don’t believe in yourself, then you might not be so special after all.").

    2) The text evolves as you read it. Which is cool because it's like making a friend. At first, you're a bit clumsy, but as he allows you to be yourself, gradually, everything eases into natural.
It allowed me to sit back and open to the 2hrs (Medium Reading Time Estimation) of down-to-earth advice. So, by the end of it, I noticed how the writing became more fluent, the ideas clearer and the "don't know"s somewhat fewer. (point #3 in the CONs section)

    3) You can trust Yann to be there, walking you through it all, thanks to his own personal experience and authenticity. I mostly respect him for that.
The most used words in the book are "about", "because", "when" - at around 2% each and "know" and "really" at approximately 1% each. This means his text is explanatory and aiming to reason with you. But there are two more that caught my eye: "all" and "one". Second and third most used words in his book - this supports my statement above -> The book is a statement to the fact that "We're all in this together, but you're the only one who's gonna make your IT happen."

    CONs
    1) Title. Too long. But you know what they say about judging books by covers, right?! Or was that just for people?

    2) I usually pay attention to aesthetics. For me, in writing, form is as important as essence. The book has substance which needs to be spread, no doubt about that. It's the messy stream-of-consciousness kind of writing that I would probably do slightly different. :)

    3) He uses "I don't know" a lot.
66 times in a 34k words text. That's roughly 0.2%, I know. But the reasons for which he does it are legit. Sometimes he does it so he can stick to the point, some other times out of humbleness and some other times out of the pure honesty of not having discovered it yet.

    The UTTER PRO
There was this idea in the text... The one I almost missed. Yann's telling the story of the "what could be". Instead of the "what is". And this is brilliant because today we focus so much on judging what is, that we forget to believe in our "could be"s. Yann encourages that - believing that we can be more.

In my opinion, that's the utter added value of this book - it offers perspective, not perception. And that's how we drive shifts in our root paradigms. That's how we unlock potentials and pop.

So read this and then go do your thing! POP!
