The Echoes of Ashlington Kindle Edition
2015
‘There has been a Durand in Ashlington for hundreds of years,’ was something Lillian had heard all her life. A life now spent in London with the career, fiancé, and success she had always wanted. When forced to return to her ancestral Cotswold home, a chilling presence with a desperate message leads her to believe she is not the only Durand left walking the halls of Ashlington Manor.
1807
Henry escapes his father’s expectations by taking a commission in the British Army where he meets Robert Westbrook. Standing shoulder to shoulder through the Peninsula War, not only fighting the French but each other’s demons, their bond grows into something deeper. But it is going home to Ashlington that Henry dreads. Home where disaster waits.
Lillian enlists the help of childhood friend Nick Hawkins to unravel Henry’s story, discovering much of what they had been told of Lillian’s heroic ancestor was a lie.
Can past and present find a way to work together so that they might all settle their grief, find love once lost, and learn what it truly means to be home, or will Ashlington be lost forever?

Rowan MacKemsley
Having grown up in the rural Cotswolds, Rowan’s love of aviation led to a private pilot’s license at seventeen, and subsequent career in the aviation industry. Marrying a military man means lots of moving around, currently on country number six (the USA), raising two amazing, resilient children she hopes the world will be a fairer and less judgmental place for.
Rowan’s love for books began when introduced to The Hobbit in primary school. The combination of dragons, maps, and adventure sparking an imagination that she eventually took seriously. When not writing, she loves to travel with the family, exploring the great outdoors and history of wherever they find themselves—even better if castles and battlefields are involved. If it is race weekend for the Formula 1, then she’ll be glued to the tv watching the highs and lows of her beloved scarlet team.
The Echoes of Ashlington is her debut novel.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 7, 2022The Echoes of Ashlington is historical fiction told in tandem with contemporary romance. With a volleying shift between past and present, members of the Durand family embark on a voyage of torn allegiances, self discovery, and forbidden love. MacKemsley composed gripping scenes ranging from brutal warfare to the tenderest of moments, with a little supernatural thrown in to sweeten an already tasty pot! Honour Bound, the continuing story, is on my TBR!

This has been a year filled with five star reads, some from my favorite authors, but this one shines among them <3
- Reviewed in the United States on February 9, 2022I was lucky enough to receive an ARC of this lovely book and let me tell you, it did NOT disappoint! I will be the first to admit, I am not normally one to gravitate toward historical fiction, but I am so glad I was able to read this! Once I got into it, I couldn't put it away! It was informative while also being captivating, I felt like I learned about something so very real while also still feeling that magical way fiction can sweep you up and wrap around you. The love story was *chef's kiss* and the alternating character perspectives were excellent, not to mention getting to experience the story over so many years. Absolutely recommended! Please give this book a chance! Do not let it pass you by! Your heart needs this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Can't Believe This is a Debut
A solid five stars for The Echoes of Ashlington and highly recommended. The characters and setting drew me in from start to finish. I rooted for Lillian and Nick as much for Henry and Robert. I was surprised to learn this is a debut for Rowan MacKemsley - very well written with absolutely no lag spots in the story. I can't wait for more from this author - now one of my new favourites. Well done!

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant debut
The Echoes of Ashlington, @rowanmackemsley
This was a very different read for me, and I’m damn happy that I did.
I’ve always been a big fan of books that switch between perspectives, but to do it over two centuries is wholly impressive. It left me in awe of how well executed it was performed. I’ve learned more about the napoleonic war from Rowan than I have elsewhere (yes, I’m uneducated. Sue me).
The character relationships are undeniably believable, and the man of the match performance goes to the relationship between Henry and Robert. This is definitely an area I can’t go into spoilers for, but hand on heart I can say I’ve never cheered for two people more than I have here.
I said earlier that story effortlessly jumps between eras, and it would be easy for any author to get self indulgent with their writing while performing this, but Rowan keeps everything flowing perfectly. Everything written is to serve the story.
A truly brilliant book 👏👏👏

5.0 out of 5 stars A Stunning Debut!
“Then he was there with a hand on Henry’s shoulder, lighting the dark as sure as the sun rose every morning.”
Part historical fiction, part mystery, part romance. This book had me invested from the first chapter!
Told across multiple POVs and time that spans 200 hundred years, ECHOES follows Lillian, Nick, Henry, and West. Each character is very well written. I can’t decide whose story I prefer more!
Lillian’s father has just died and she’s returned home to the manor that has been in her family for hundreds of years. Tasked with going through her ancestral home in order to sell the place, she discovers a chilling presence walking the halls of Ashlington. She enlists her childhood friend, Nick, to help her uncover Henry’s story. A story that takes place all the way back in the 1800s as he serves in the British Army alongside West.
Writing over two timelines can be hard to do, but Rowan pulls it off amazingly. Each timeline had its own arc and they intertwine towards the end of the book.
I don’t know much about the Napoleonic war, but ECHOES reads as if Rowan has thoroughly done her research- therefore teaching me a whole lot of stuff- and has effortlessly built her plot around real life events.
Although this book has an amazing plot, I must say that one of Rowan’s many talents as an author is her characters. ECHOES is a very character driven story and you can’t help but love and root for each one. You will fall in love with Lillian, Nick, Henry, West and the whole gang- including a very sweet dog named Holly. These characters feel so real with many facets as to who they are and why they make the choices they do.
All in all, THE ECHOES OF ASHLINGTON is a brilliant book that will have you wanting more- which is perfect because it has been announced that it will be a series! Congratulations Rowan 👏
*I also want to add that Echoes features a gay romance between two male characters and it is everything! So swoon worthy!* 🏳️🌈

5.0 out of 5 stars Grabs your attention from the very first page…
The Echoes Of Ashlington by @rowanmackemsley is a captivating read.. I was hooked from the first page and then gradually got more and more addicted as the story developed and the characters became revealed.
Such an innovative and different plot includes history, the horror of war, the complexities of relationships and ghosts of the characters you get to know well through their struggles, their history and their hidden lives.
I loved every character and can’t to find out what happens next, the book ended far too soon for my liking - by the end I was lost in the world of these characters and the places they love.
