Embracing the Dragon (Flames of Kalleen Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 96 ratings

Can a human heart withstand the flames of a dragon’s soul?

For centuries, the dragons of Kalleen have ruled the skies. Blessed by the goddess of fire, those born of her power are destined to exist within two worlds, while fully belonging to neither.

As a daughter of the dragon queen, Amelia has always been torn between her humanity and winged form. In meeting Stephen, she found a blossoming love that gave her hope of finding balance. A dream destroyed when her sister, and future queen, sets her sights upon the same man.

Forced from her lover’s side, Amelia embraces a self-imposed exile, taking refuge in the northern mountains. In this new life of solitude, she banishes painful memories by retreating to her dragon form, sheltering the wounded girl within. Yet it is an isolation that cannot last, as the new dragon queen’s cruelty bears down upon the kingdom, allowing an ancient enemy to rise.

Drawn from her banishment by the pleas of friends, Amelia must choose. Will she embrace the destructive beast within? Or draw upon the frail humanity that lingers dimly in her soul, in a desperate attempt to help her people, and mend a broken heart?

Fantastic Fantasy!!
5 out of 5 stars
Fantastic Fantasy!!
K.L. Bone is a rising star who I don't foresee stopping now. Her writing style is graceful and descriptive. Her world building is done with precision, and it is honestly a pleasure to read her work. Amelia is the second Princess of Kalleen. Soon to be first when her sister is coronated in a few days as the new Queen. Her life couldn't be better. She has a love of a noble, her heart was full, and her grief had lessened from the loss of her mother. The only thing that occurs in the next few days is hurt, disappointment and bone-crushing betrayal. The tragic events lead Amelia to solitude, hidden away where no one from her former life can find her. And the entertaining sub-plots giving us glimpses to the past, present, and future (possibilities). Ok... ok... ok... I need to breathe for a second. . . . . . . Ok. Now I could do spoilers, but I don't want to. I really recommend lovers of dragons, strong women and fantasy in general to read THIS BOOK! OMG... and the hint at the end that gives us subtle clues to the beautiful continuation (there is a book 2 right?) 5 stars and a tip of my Nerd Girl hat. *This review was done in conjunction with Nerd Girl Official

I thoroughly enjoyed Embracing the Dragon! It was exciting, beautifully-written, and unlike anything I've read before.

First of all, I really loved the world-building in this book. KL Bone gave us plenty of details about the setting and its history, but not once did I feel like the pace lagged because of it. Rather than the info dumps that many fantasy books have, the information was weaved throughout the story in a natural way. I felt like I knew plenty about the setting and the history without once having been bored by the info, which is a brilliant feat.

There was so much going on with the temples, the tension between shifters and non-shifters, Amelia's dreams, the story of Gwen and Gwain, and of course, all the details behind Amelia's exile. I loved it all! So much happened in such a short amount of time, yet nothing felt rushed. Absolutely amazing!

I also enjoyed the wonderful cast of characters. There were so many I found myself rooting for. I felt a great connection to the protagonist, Amelia, but it was actually two side characters (Gwen and Gwain) that I loved the most. KL Bone does a magnificent job telling us about their emotional past and tying it into what was happening to Amelia at present. At one point I even got choked up!

There really was so much to love about this book, but I feel the need to also applaud Bone's writing style. The words seemed to dance off the page and I could picture everything perfectly. Well done!

I HIGHLY recommend this book for any fans of fantasy, dragons, exiled princesses, and overall amazing writing!! I can't wait to read book 2 in the series!!

This review is cross-posted from my blog. I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Way back in the day, I could not care less to offer any attention to polymorphing characters, let alone stories where half-or-more of the cast is able to transform into animals or mythical creatures. To the me of 10-to-15 years ago, they were nothing more than unstoppable, two-dimensional "Mary Sue"s who screamed of wish-fulfillment and power fantasy.

After reading K. L. Bone's Embracing the Dragon, I was able to confidently step up to Past Me and tell him to shut the hell up.

In the opening chapters, I get what I came for as alluded to by the blurb. Despite the book committing one of the deadly sins of opening chapters—"Starting the book with a dream sequence"—everything you expect is there. We are treated to just the right amount of expository prose and dialogue that puts you in the world of Kalleen, without getting bogged down by a derailing info-dump. I was especially grateful for this when it came to introducing the laws and lore behind the aforementioned polymorphing. The details behind how people can (or cannot) transform into dragons are only brought to the reader when it is relevant.

In addition to this, the descriptions of the transformation sequences evoke the visual very well. The author also manages to be consistent with the benefits and drawbacks of transforming as opposed to skirting the rules when it's convenient for the heroine. Even the fact that clothes are not factored into the transformation, winding up utterly destroyed during an untimely transformation, was not overlooked.

But enough about that, let's talk story!

The tale follows Dragon Princess Amelia. And if you just rolled your eyes when I said that, let me stop you right there. Because although it seems like she's got a good life and could do no wrong, as soon as her eldest sister takes the crown, Amelia's posh life in the palace doesn't last much longer. Piece by piece, everything she's ever known is taken from her. Crap hits the fan. Hard. Repeatedly. Overall, K. L. Bone did a fantastic job of crafting the meticulous rhythm which the tire iron slams into Amelia's kneecaps. By the time I was halfway through the book, I was saying, "Can things get any worse for her?"

Not that I wanted them to. But all of her hardships allowed me the space to better understand and root for her!

The allies Amelia meets along her journey have their plights as well, as the plot exposes hints of shady dealings coming from the palace. Many people throughout the land of Kalleen take issue with the caste and hierarchy that has been in place over the centuries; especially those who are not able to transform. I don't think I can dive too far into this without giving away any specific key plot points, so I'll leave it at that.

The story is solidly-constructed, decently-paced, and has a little something for everybody. It's got action, discourse, dragons, knights, intrigue, beautiful women, hunky guys, and solid lore. Even scenes where some of that squishy-jiggle boink-boink was going on were presented in beautifully-worded, saucy detail, and were never out-of-place.

However, the book is not without its flaws.

In addition to the "deadly sin" mentioned above, there is a sequence that takes the story back in time. Now, I do not have an issue with flashbacks. I do have an issue with the flashback being interrupted three different times; all three times used to quickly zip back to the present to summarize what I just read, and follow it up with someone asking the equivalent of "What happened next?" I personally feel that the overall impact of the flashback sequence was stunted by those interruptions.

The other thing that stood out to me was the repeated use of the sentence: "I don't understand." This exact sentence is used a whopping 28 times! And I could probably point to 20 of them that appear to be put in place just to pad the dialogue. It bugged me only a little at first, then I noticed it appearing twice on the same page, stated by the same character. This may seem like a nitpick, but when you're reading some expository dialogue and you know the phrase, "I don't understand" is going to show up on the next page, it gets tiring.

Do not let those last two paragraphs prevent you from picking this up, though! Embracing the Dragon has a great world and engaging characters that I want to return to! The book captivated me and kept me pleasantly entertained all the way up to me hearing the "DUN DUN DUUUNNNN!" in my head at the end of the closing chapter.

I have every intention of picking up Releasing the Dragon as soon as I create an opening in my queue for it. Until then, this book and where it left off will be itching the back of my brain. I look forward to it!

An unexpected story that weaves together events and details that will have you turning pages. Dragons, knights, sisters at odds, betrayal, and engaging characters are just some things that I liked about this story. I also liked the storyline, it's written well, and the words flow nicely. A very interesting read but so good.

There were so many different things to like but hello what's not to love about dragons?! KL Bone writes the most amazing story that always keeps my attention. The growth of the characters are amazing to read about. Will her life work out how it should? Does she get her happy ending....guess you will just have to read to find out. :)

I really enjoyed reading this dragon shifter story. Princess Amelia is happy being the younger sister of the queen who can enjoy her life without all of the politics of the crown until she is betrayed by her sister and her lover. Amelia sets out on a journey or discovery which is filled with heartache and betrayal and loss. As her character grows she realizes she is much more than just the younger sister to the evil queen. She has what it takes to save her kingdom and it's people. Amelia is an empowering character that fills you with hope. I highly recommend reading this series.

This dragon shifter book was a great and enjoyable read! I mean any dragon is interesting but were dragons what’s not to like? That is if they are dum right and KL Bome certainly did that! She explores what can go wrong when a shifter can not control the dragon inside! A truly magical world. I would recommend this to any fantasy fan. Gave it four because I wanted more magic! Love the interview at the end!!

And then devolved into a wishy washy main character that became annoyingly more wishy washy to the point where interest waned. Needless to say will not search for the follow on book.
