Eton Mess Massacre: Albert Smith's Culinary Capers Recipe 12 Kindle Edition

4.7 out of 5 stars 2,961 ratings

Baking. It can get a guy killed.

When the chef tipped to win this year’s annual Eton Mess competition falls to his death in mysterious circumstances, Albert races to investigate - surely this is the work of the Gastrothief again.

However, Albert barely makes it out of the train station before his detective’s brain sees something most other people would never spot – a crime is about to take place and there’s no way he can ignore it.

Instantly shackled with a new problem, Albert attempts to solve both cases simultaneously, but is he up to the task?

It’s a good thing he has trusted partner Rex Harrison, the oversized former police dog, ready to lend a paw because this time he’s going to need all the help he can get.

New sidekicks to meet, new dishes to taste, and yet another deadly adventure awaits as Albert and Rex try to give the bad guys their just desserts!

About the Author

At school, the author was mostly disinterested in every subject except creative writing, for which, at age ten, he won his first award. However, calling it his first award suggests that there have been more, which there have not. Accolades may come but, in the meantime, he is having a ball writing mystery stories and crime thrillers and claims to have more than a hundred books forming an unruly queue in his head as they clamour to get out. He lives in the south-east corner of England with a duo of lazy sausage dogs. Surrounded by rolling hills, brooding castles, and vineyards, he doubts he will ever leave, the beer is just too good.

When Steve Higgs wrote his debut novel, Paranormal Nonsense, he was a captain in the British Army. He would like to pretend that he had one of those careers that must be blacked out and generally denied by the government, and that he has to change his name and move constantly because he is still on the watch list in several countries. In truth, though, he started out as a mechanic - not like Jason Statham in the film by that name, sneaking around as a hitman, but more like one of those sleazy guys who charges a fortune and keeps your car for a week even though the only thing you went in for was a squeaky door hinge.

At school, he was largely disinterested in all subjects except creative writing, for which he won his first prize at the age of ten. However, calling it the first prize he won suggests that there were other prizes, which is not the case. Awards may yet come, but in the meantime, he enjoys writing mystery and thriller novels and claims to have more than a hundred books forming a restless queue in his mind because they are desperate to be written.

Now retired from the military, he lives in southeast England with a duo of lazy sausage dogs. Surrounded by rolling hills, brooding castles, and vineyards, he doubts he'll ever leave, the beer is just too good.

The dog in this book is Rex Harrison. He is a retired police dog. Albert Smith is a retired policeman. Albert is a widower, and his wife always teased him because he absolutely does not know how to cook. So they are visiting many places overseas where the great cooks are.

The story is a bit mixed up. Took time to figure out that the Gatrothief wasn't the main theme. Otherwise...

I just love this duo: elderly ex-policeman and younger ex-police dog! It's incredible how Steve Higgs
continues to spin all those tales - especially with this series (even though I do appreciate the Patricia
Fisher series as well), you keep reading and reading... The only drawback really is that one always
finishes the book too quickly that way...
I'm happy to learn that Alfred and Rex are still due for more adventures and will follow their exploits
    as a loyal reader!

I used to have a German Shepherd. What a mushy pup, ruled by good and his ladies, so I have a fondness for this series. It's cleverly written, so will happily read all of them. Thank you Mr Higgs. A chapter or two is a 👍 reward at the end of a long day.

Take a light hearted romp on what was originally intended as a taste testing tour of the best of regional recipes through the British Isles. Retired Detective Superintendent Albert Smith & retired PD Rex end up on the trail of the "Gastrothief" solving murders & causing mayhem.
