This book has changed my confused and skeptical relationship with twitter to an enjoyable and productive one in a few hours.

36 short chapters take you through creating your account to more advanced topics like lists, managing your account, apps, multiple accounts, and staying safe. Within each of these chapters, Hall gives information for beginners, a 'what not to do' section, advanced strategies, and a section on mistakes she's made and how you can learn from them. If you're a beginner, you can stick to the easy strategies, and come back to the rest when you're ready.

You may be thinking "Really? Come on, how complicated can Twitter be?". I hear you, because that's what I thought, too: but I didn't know how much I didn't know. For example, it never occurred to me that people scan feeds looking for certain avatars, so if you're the sort of person (like me) who likes to change your avatar picture often, you're just confusing your followers. Change your cover picture as often as you like, but keep that avatar picture consistent.

I also never liked Twitter because my feed was a huge mess--I could never figure out how people managed to sort through all those tweets! That's because nobody who knows better actually uses their feed as-is; they always use some method of filtering to get at what they want. Either via lists, hashtags, apps, or other methods, they pull out what they need at any given moment and ignore the rest. Huge epiphany--and now I'm able to interact with the people I want to interact with at a given time.

Admittedly, I was completely twitter challenged--I didn't even know you could create lists, or turn off people's retweets. I didn't realize there were whole events that used hashtags, and that you could use filters to make them easy to participate in. I didn't know you could attach pictures. And I certainly had no clue how to get followers that would actually be interested in what I had to say, and that I could build professional relationships with.

Twitter for Writers walked me through all of this, and tons more. Hall's writing is clear, accessible, easy to follow. I love that she's willing to admit the mistakes she made so you don't make the same ones. And for me, this book was worth the price just for the useful hashtags she shares.

Most of all, I appreciated Hall's emphasis on building genuine relationships. This doesn't mean having long, in-depth conversations with every one of your followers everyday--but it means you share genuine interests and will find one another's tweets potentially interesting. Reaching out to other authors, to readers, to other professionals in the industry not just to say 'look at me!', but to engage, share information, learn from one another. This is the approach that will build you a successful and useful network, and she stresses that throughout.

If you're a writer and you're baffled by Twitter or are looking to use it more efficiently, this book is for you. It has something to offer all but the most savvy users, and probably even a tip or two for them! In a time when social media is growing in importance everyday, Twitter for Writers is a wonderful addition to your writer's tool-kit.

Most of the writers I know (and most of the people I know) are Facebook users, as am I. We are members of various writing and editing groups, and we use the messaging function a lot. It's also a way of keeping up with far-lung friends and family. However, I do have a Twitter account (and a healthy and growing number of followers). Most of what I know has been learned through trial and error, and I wasn't even sure if I was doing the right things.

Twitter for Writers starts at the very beginning, with how to set up an account, how to load pictures (the line about doing it at midnight when the moon is full got me laughing--the last thing I expected), how to find like-minded followers, and the basics of hashtags (despite what some of my Facebook friends seem to believe, they are about topics, not #randomstringsofletters. She also gives suggestions of good hashtags for writers to use (or search on), and examples of when to use certain hashtags (e.g. #amwriting, which I find I'm guilty of misusing).

So Twitter for Writers was helpful, both in that it confirmed I have been doing the right things, like keeping my number of people followed at roughly the same number as my followers, and avoiding apps that send automatic messages. Like Hall, I'm bemused by why I should have to prove to a computer that I'm a real person (auto validation services), and I don't like RoundTeam (what do they do, anyway?). It's nice to find I'm not the only Grinch on the interwebz.

She also gives some handy hints for creating tweets that you can use over and over (why didn't I think of that?). Overall, well worth buying for writers new to Twitter and trying to decide how to use it (or even if they should), and useful hints for those of us who have been Twitterers a little longer. It's an easy read, packed full of solid advice from someone who has built a platform of over 50,000 Twitter followers in only a little over two years.

Above all, writers have to remember the golden rule of social media: your goal is to connect with readers, not other writers. Twitter can help, but you have to search for readers and not just follow other writers (which is what I, and all my friends, seem to do on Facebook!).

The one proviso with Twitter for Writers is that it does what is says in the title: gives effective guidance for writers to use Twitter. If you're not a writer (or not interested in topics such as writing, editing, publishing and book marketing, then you'll probably get more out of another guide.

If you're an author (or would-be author) who wants to jump on the Twitter bandwagon but are unsure of how to start—READ THIS. Rayne lays it all out, from the first step of setting up your account to growing your following, beating the dreaded Twitter 2000 barrier, and even launching a TwitterParty to celebrate your new releases.

She not only takes the reader through the steps to becoming confident in using this crucial social media tool, but also provides "advanced strategies" to solidify your Twitter presence even further. As a further bonus, she allows us to learn from her mistakes, by detailing them at the end of each chapter.

I plan to keep this valuable resource right next to me as I navigate the social media seas. I'd advise any author to do the same.

It's a pretty detailed book about how to use Twitter as a writer. I seriously recommend it to everybody, who has a book to promote, because you shouldn't do it on Twitter. At least not in the way you see it all the time.
Sometimes the author's descriptions are detailed, sometimes a little too detailed, if you're not that new to Twitter. But of course it's great she thinks of those who don't have a clue how Twitter works, which is very thoughtful. And sometimes the details really help, because she mentions points you might not have thought of. The description of her own mistakes in her first years on Twitter make her advice genuine. I really liked it.
Rayne Hall has a series of good books about the writer's craft. I recommend them all, because she has some great advice. They are easy-reads and very encouraging.

Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 10, 2014
If you've just started using Twitter to promote your book and don't know exactly what to do, BUY THIS BOOK NOW!

Right. I am not a Twitter noob. I have been using the site since 2011, have 41,000 followers, often get mentioned in those 'top influencers in my community' things, have found most of my regular readers through and thought I knew virtually everything about Twitter, even though I don't do all of it. However!!! I've just learned a whole bunch of new stuff. Okay, I shall never have a Twitter party, and can't be bothered with the construction of lists, but at least I know where to look if I ever change my mind. More than that, though, there are all sorts of little odd bits of information I didn't know, or just pieces of very sound advice. I've read this book over a period of 24 hours, and it's influenced my Twitter behaviour several times during that day.

I've written articles on Twitter and the indie published writer myself. I won't bother sending them to people from now on - I'll just tell people to get this book. It's written so accessibly, too. I don't agree with absolutely everything in it, but that's okay, because we all have slightly different ways of managing our Twitterly selves. The best thing about it? Rayne has told you EXACTLY why you should not use those 'contributed tweets are provided by @SomeDaftApp' things, why you shouldn't do auto tweets/DMs, how to identify spam and (ro)bot accounts, and how to keep yourself safe and unhacked. If you know someone who reckons they can create a buzz for their book simply by signing up for some app that does all the work for them, buy them this.

I know the danger with such an instruction manual is that it will date - for instance, this was written before the new profiles came into use - but it doesn't matter with this book, as the basics are still there. It will help you to make the most of your Twitter time, and not waste it on spam profiles. Forget all those books that promise to share with you the secrets of becoming an Amazon bestseller - If you're a writer, and you want to get yourself known, this is the book you should buy first. Now!

ps, it's worth getting just for the picture of Sulu the cat in the bird bath...

I found about about Rayne's book from one of the writer's blogs I regularly read and, as soon as I clicked on the Amazon description, I knew this was the book I had been waiting for. I'm not a technophobe - I designed my own website, formatted my own ebook and can do passably good design for book covers and yet I have been avoiding social media like the plague!
Thanks to Rayne's book, I no longer feel that Twitter is 'unapproachable'. Twitter for Writers is written in an easy, friendly and funny voice and is incredibly thorough. I actually feel confident that I can start tweeting and not make too many newbie mistakes thanks to Rayne's hilarious section at the end of each chapter, What Not To Do.
Many thanks Rayne for demystifying the Twitter enigma!
