- Reviewed in the United States on November 2, 2014Format: KindleA friend recommended this book to me and it sat on my bedside table for more than half a year, not sure what to make of it from the cover and synopsis. As a reunion with the friend approached, I felt doubly obligated to give it a chance - this isn't the type of story you fake your way through a book club meeting.
Wow!
By the time i met with my friend, i could barely put my thoughts together around the book. On a practical level, it has all of the elements of a good read: interesting characters, solid writing, a perplexing (but real) political backdrop, wit, etc... What grabbed me about this book was the intimate portrayal of the pervasive 'foreignness' one can feel at all levels of human existence - from social-political to interpersonal - even in the context of "the self" at times.
What a great surprise of a book.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 17, 2014Format: PaperbackA great read! It follows a foreign national family throughout their experiences in South America, centered around the young female protagonist. I enjoyed following her and her bittersweet life that's infused with great insight that's applicable far beyond the covers of the book. To me it seemed somewhat "Grapes of Wrath-esque" in it's study of the human spirit in increasingly desperate times and the ability to persevere. All in all I really enjoyed the unique writing style of Julian Feeld.

5.0 out of 5 stars Twisted, empathetic and unpredictable.
Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseI loved this book, it's weird, frightening in places, sad in places, has a dark thread of humour running right through it and builds to a crescendo that I couldn't have predicted nor could I peel my eyes away from. It feels out of time but not old fashioned, just classical in a strange way. I stayed up much too late into the night to finish it and don't regret it at all.
Quick note, it's not a swift read, it demands your attention and will punish you for daring to skim. Absolutely worth the effort and the discipline though, it's a unique story, brilliantly written.
