Excalibur Lost: a Space Opera Novella Kindle Edition
A broken man
A lost legend…
Only dreams and stories remain of the worlds humanity once called home, but scattered refugees live in the corners of the empire of their conquerors, the Sacred Council of Races.
Among those refugees is Gerard Arkanis, first officer of a salvage ship dedicated to picking over the remains of his species’ desperate attempt to stand against the Council’s galaxy-spanning theocracy.
Hard work and hypocrisy have kept Arkanis alive, serving a god he cannot believe in. Humanity’s fate leaves him no choice—until their ship stumbles onto a legendary lost warship and the remains of a failed plan to save all mankind…

- Reviewed in the United States on February 9, 2021A very enjoyable novella that I hope develops into a series.
Earth lays in ruins along with four other human worlds. Victims of an Edict from the Medari Sacred Council. Revenge for the humans almost destroying the invading Medari fleet and avoiding enslavement.
Decades later, a Medari salvage ship searches the old battlefield, hoping to find salvageable, working human tech, especially the phase weapons that devastated the Medari fleet. A sensor ghost grabs the Medari captain’s attention. With nothing to lose, they investigate the phantom. The captain hopes it will be an intact human ship that will make him rich. The human members of the crew hope for an intact warship for entirely different reasons.
A fun, fast paced read with an interesting storyline and engaging characters.
I received an ARC for my review. I purchased a copy to support the author.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 1, 2021A dynamite action story of a defeated Earth, humanity hunted by a genocidal Theocratic alien Empire, a few trustees find Earth's last, greatest weapon, it's original crew long dead? Can a handful of almost refugees repair it enough? If they can escape, what can they do against an Empire of 5,000 suns?
Lots of action, aliens good and bad, tough choices. Makes one really want to read more! Stewart already juggling a LOT of really good stuff. He's among the best of hard SF writer doing misnamed space opera. The modern version is not so much superscience as it is logical development of plausible future interstellar tech, both capabilities and limitations. Only a few authors seem to realistically operate under real physical appreciation of the vastness both of interstellar and interplanetary space and including limitations imposed by space and physics. Glynn is there with the best! Highly recommended.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 10, 2021Mr. Stewart writes well. His fighting descriptions are mild at the end. He only writes of a small tally of the ships that are fighting. He needs to strengthen his narrative, to truly exceed in his plot!!!
- Reviewed in the United States on February 19, 2021An absolute treat of a story! A well done tightly written story of a ragtag group of human surviors of the decimation of earth leading a rebellion against the empire that crushed humanity years before.
The author manages the deft trick of setting up a believable background while telling an interesting tale. Well drawn characters and sufficient world building that draws the reader in. Only a novella, well worth the read. One can only hope Glynn Stewart decides to expand on what appears to be another interesting universe.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 13, 2021Mankind is enslaved by another alien race after years of war ending in one gigantic final stand. Years later a salvage vessel is roaming through the area of the most epic battle ever fought scrounging for terran technology. Even though the space is technically off limits, the alien captain of the salvage vessel is going into this area hoping for intact pieces of technology that still has an edge over their own technology. Gerard, leader of the human crewmembers of the salvage vessel will have to act quickly once they stumble over an intact ship that everyone thought was just a myth! An adventure that will keep you glued to the pages!!
- Reviewed in the United States on February 24, 2021Overall this new universe from Glynn Stewart is quite interesting. The form of space travel as well as well as weapons is quite intriguing. There are a couple of flaws that kept bugging me though...
Slight SPOILERS AHEAD
I fail to understand how a tiny crew of non-military humans that are unlikely to have ever even seen a Terran military space vessel are so capable at restarting a twenty year old ship that is supposed to be crewed by thousands.
The ending. That soured me on the main character a bit too much. His final thoughts of certain entitlement felt quite sudden after all the liberation talk throughout the novella.

5.0 out of 5 stars Most entertaining mini space opera
I can't help it, I like it when the human race just lost through bad luck. But somewhere there is a leftover weapon which is the tool to kick the corporative asses of the enemy to kingdom come. Well, this part ist mostly about the bad luck and finding the superweapon. I am really looking forward to the kick ass part.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic beginning
In this first book, the author set the table for the next instalment in the series’s. Even if humanity is almost extinct, a legend at the end of the war that saw the humain worlds being destroyed by an implacable enemy, is rising to give hope where there was none.

Once again a master of story telling does his job. Gripping story that I couldn't put down, really hope we see far more of this series.

4.0 out of 5 stars Short story
This is a short story ,126 pages.
I Always look forward to a Glynn Stewart book and this book does not disappoint. (Too much)
Good back story and characters. Looking forward to their development. But this is a story in development and not finished by a long shot, I don't mean there are more stories in future books, I mean this book just ended, as if it was the 1st commercial break in a tv episode. Example: you have the informational first 3 minutes of the story line, then the musical intro, then the first 5 minutes of the story.....cut for a tea break aanndd NOTHING.....THEY DIDN'T COME BACK FROM COMMERCIALS. There was a start, BUT NO MIDDLE OR END to this story. This is a teaser story. What you get at the end of a book promoting the idea of a next book. Hopefully this is a new series or a one off big novel and not thrown on the forgotten heap.
