Exit Reality: A Ray Garret/Lifeline (Cyberpunk Detective) Technothriller Kindle Edition

3.7 out of 5 stars 18 ratings

The future of experience is digital...even in death. No one knows this better than Ray Garret. In a world where the human brain can connect directly to the internet, human beings become the target of a mass-murdering computer virus.

Ray's an Antivii agent in charge of tracking down the source of digi-human viruses. He's no lover of the HPDID (Human Perceptual Digital Interface Device), but when a recorded experience from his dead wife is left for him, Ray has no choice but to play the file, changing his life forever.

"With lean prose, strong characters, and a plot that will keep you guessing, EXIT REALITY is as entertaining as it is suspenseful. With this book, Robert S. Wilson proves himself a master of the dark fantastic." --Tim Waggoner, author of LIKE DEATH and THE HARMONY SOCIETY

"Wilson's EXIT REALITY is a cyberpunk nightmare that just keeps getting better and better, until you hit that mark where you know it's finished but crave more. It meets at the positively alluring intersection of Phillip K. Dick Avenue and Raymond Chandler Boulevard, and there are a scarcity of other street corners where I'd rather find myself." --Benjamin Kane Ethridge, Bram Stoker Award Winning author of BLACK & ORANGE and BOTTLED ABYSS

"Do yourself a favor and pick up a copy of Robert S. Wilson's fast-paced novella, EXIT REALITY. The story is compelling and well-written, the author deftly negotiating the line between SF and Horror--a difficult sub-genre that only the best writers can manage. Recommended without reservation." --Gene O'Neill, Bram Stoker Award-winning author of THE BURDEN OF INDIGO and OPERATION RHINOCEROS HORNBILL

"Kiss the world you know goodbye and get ready for Robert S. Wilson's terrifying sci-fi novella, EXIT REALITY. With powerful storytelling and fast-paced action, Wilson's ready to entertain and move you in equal measure." --Peter Giglio, author of BEYOND ANON and co-author of THE DARK

"EXIT REALITY is a fast-paced blend of sci-fi horror. Robert S. Wilson has created a believable near-future and populated it with all-too real characters. The nightmarish spiral of Ray Garret's descent is thrilling and unforgettable, and the technology feels just one step away. The narrative thrums with loss and desire. Wilson's muscular writing grips you tightly and pulls you along. Escape is futile. This will be one ride you won't forget." --Stephen Bacon, author of PEEL BACK THE SKY

Robert S Wilson has created a fascinating world and hero in what I hope is a long series. This story has a great combination of various genres. There are elements of Mysteries, Noir, Sci Fi and fantasy incorporated into the story and they all fit together perfectly. Ray is a character you root for and one you want to learn more about. The bad guy is really bad and I enjoyed him as well. The pace is fast moving and the writing is excellent. There are elements of a love story as well that are not too much or too little. Overall this is a great story that left me wanting to read more which I will look forward to doing in future stories.

Exit Reality is the story of Ray Garret, recently widowed antivii agent, and his investigation of a virtual reality virus that has left hundreds dead at their keyboards.

The beginning reads like a noir techno thriller - what is Exit Reality and how can it be stopped? - but the story quickly spirals into a hectic paced chase through the city that seemed to abandon the early attempts at characterization and plot in favor of description after description. It races downhill to a rather neat and unsatisfying conclusion.

    So why three stars?

There are three things I like about Exit Reality:

1 The first third of the book is compelling and well written. It set up an interesting world and premise, which, although not entirely original, was intriguing.

2 At the beginning of the book something called The Tunnel is introduced, and it sounds a spooky place. Unfortunately, it turns out to be a huge disappointment.

3 The Necro-clubs and Deathheads. These are people who get high from dying in virtual reality. I loved this idea but it had little to do with the plot.

Ray Garret is a bit of troubled man these days. His wife died, he is working a tough case with no leads, and he has a bit of a drinking problem. What Garret needs is an escape, an exit if you will.

Exit Reality is a great page turning thriller about Garret's transformation from a troubled man into... well something else entirely. This science fiction thriller with horror elements really shows a brilliant blending of several genres that fans have come to expect from Robert S. Wilson.

The wonderfully detailed world that we see here is a great example of storytelling at its finest. The story is engaging and you will find yourself turning pages quickly just to keep up. It is highly recommended for science fiction, thriller, and horror fans. You won't regret adding this to your collection.

Robert S. Wilson is becoming one of my new favorite writers. He has an aptitude for writing various genres and styles, and he excels in them all. Exit reality is a great scifi/noir/horror novella. The plot is inventive and never predictable. I had no idea where this story was going until it was over. If you look on the cover of the book, below the Title "Exit Reality" is the Subtitle " A Ray Garret/Lifeline Techno Thriller". I am hoping that from this subtitle we can expect more books in this series as Robert S. Wilson has created a rich world/environment and characters that it would be a shame to abandon. I know that I would like to see more.

It almost becomes second nature, prying the vise-like grip of a dead man’s hands from his computer keyboard, once you’ve done it a couple hundred times…

So begins Robert S. Wilson’s Exit Reality, a novella set in a near future society in which people connect their brains directly to the internet via a piece of technology known as the HPDID (Human Perception Digital Interface Device) and experience new worlds and, yes, new realities limited only by the human imagination. Sounds pretty cool, huh? For the most part it is. Only one little problem though. Like the internet of today, viruses do their part to ruin the fun. And when said viruses can wreak their havoc not only upon a user’s computer but also his brain, well, the results can be rather…traumatic.

Enter Ray Garret. He’s an Antivii agent. His job? Do what he can to find those responsible for unleashing these potentially lethal viruses on the public. And it’s a job he’s pretty damn good at. That is until he comes up against a particularly nasty virus known in the media as “The Chair.” When the story opens, we find Ray investigating another potential crime scene. A man sits before his computer terminal, unmoving, hands tightly clutching the keyboard, the all too recognizable odor of burnt flesh emanating from his body. And there, on the computer screen, the two words Ray has seen far too many times in recent weeks: “Exit Reality.” Yes, The Chair has claimed another victim and Ray seems no closer now than at any other point in the investigation to putting a stop to it.

He catches a break after harassing a low level street punk named Koadie who tells him about a Necro-club called The Dead Retro. Now, Necro-clubs specialize in providing a very specific type of service for the HPDID user generally unattainable online due to certain legal restrictions. Within these establishments, the user can experience the rush of being killed—in any way imaginable—without putting his-or-herself in actual physical danger. Seems like the sort of place from where something like The Chair might emerge. And considering the dearth of leads associated with this case, Ray figures he might as well check the place out. So he enters the club, posing as a man looking to partake of the Dead Retro’s services only to discover that the hi-tech underworld he has stumbled into is not at all what it seems.

Exit Reality is a dark sci-fi novella which finds its inspiration in the cyberpunk stories of the eighties and nineties. The dark, dystopian feel of Neuromancer and Bladerunner resounds throughout its pages without overwhelming it. Robert S. Wilson adds a healthy dose of horror to the noir-SF proceedings giving them their own unique little twist—not surprising, as the author’s other works include the Empire of Blood vampire series. As with any work of speculative fiction worth the paper—or ebook reader screen—it’s printed on, Exit Reality leaves the reader wondering about the possibilities only hinted at within its pages. And I, for one, look forward to seeing how the author expands upon and, yes, investigates those possibilities in any future Ray Garret adventures.

A story of two halves, Exit Reality is a wild ride through the darkest near-future techno-nightmares of a messed up world; where a growing number of people are hooking their entire mind and soul into the Net and being sucked into The Tunnel, leaving nothing but husks behind.

Ray, an Antivii Agent and recent widower, begins to piece the mystery together just as he is offered the chance to have his Wife back. He knows it's too good to be true, but the real world is too dirty and corrupt for him now.

What follows is a journey with more than a passing nod to The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath and other Dreamcycle tales - Lovecraft cited by the Author himself as a great influence. As Ray travels through the hellish mindscape created by Benigan, the despicable tech-tyrant, he encounters all manner of allusory devices, nightmare creatures and tests of his very sanity.

Fast-paced and gritty with detail, this is a brilliant read.
