Now that I have corrected my error of accidentally reading book 3 first and have now finished book one I am blown away by the author's intricate and detailed world-building and his striking ability to create characters. They literally jump off the page/kindle grab you by the throat and drag you incredibly deep into his world! At 337 pages this book is no novella, however every one of those pages is important and necessary in creating this wonderful thrill ride of fated mates, danger and love!

This is the first book I've read by this author. I really liked this author's take on the shifter world. It was very refreshing to read a story that wasn't the same as the hundreds of others out there. It's the sign of a great author who can come up with a unique story in a saturated genre.

I felt the beginning of the book that gives the history on non shifting wolves was interesting and important to the story. The shifters used the protection of non shifting wolves as a way to keep themselves from discovery as well as to help in the recovery of non shifting wolves. That section was fairly short and to the point. The shifters seemed to really share characteristics of the non shifting wolves, ex: Arctic wolves have big paws, so in the shifter arctic wolf, his human has big hands and feet. Also, the killing off of the non shifting wolves by the humans affected the shifters, especially regarding their history. They call it the purge and is important to the storyline.

There were some timeline sections in the beginning to get the reader up to the present day. These were essential I feel to the pacing of the story, they give the reader insights into the main characters, as well as a lead up to current events. I liked this approach because I personally hate being in the middle of a story and the next chapter is 15 years ago, I like to keep moving forward even if the info is important, I don't like interruptions. (yes i am that person that records everything so i can skip commercials) That being said, I was a little peeved when during these timeline sections they sometimes skipped ahead, then the next chapter is 2 years previous. So annoying. Just stay in chronological order please.

I felt there was good action and lead up. Things seemed to happen for good reasons and not just to add unnecessary drama. I did have a few issues that I felt didn't quite match the storyline. I will try not to give too much away, so this might be a little vague. I get why the True Elder didn't make it to the birth, but it didn't make sense that he never went at all and waited to be found instead. I mean he did go out to get laid, so you couldn't go to where you were needed and be like umm sorry my bad but i am here now. Also, if you can detect lies, you couldn't figure out the right questions to ask the bad guy to see if he was the one behind it? I just felt the author managed everything else really well, I am sure they could have figured something else out to keep the story going without the bad guy being caught right away.

I also liked the way the author handled how same sex couples could have families. I want to know if there are female alphas and deltas, maybe that will come up in future books. I also liked the way the author handled the female characters in this book. You see in a lot of m/m books the females are psycho evil nutcases or treat the men like a novelty item, and this was not the case in these books. I also didn't see any gay stereotypes in this book. Not every omega or mate was super femm or twink which is refreshing. There was a lot of super overprotectiveness going on with the mates and kids, which did feel a little extra to me, but I could also see that as mimicking the behavior of the non shifting wolf counterpart, so I could see where the author was going with that since that is a big part of this world.

Overall, loved the book, highly recommend it. I am eager to read the next book. It is an ongoing story line, so not everything is answered, but I feel satisfied that this book was ended well, and did not feel like a cliff hanger.

Building an interesting alt-world, Elliott's paranormal society has its challenges and foibles. Introducing Deltas into the ABO hierarchy increases the complexity as it rounds the structure. Intriguing MCs, a well fleshed out cast of characters, and bod guys keep the story flowing. Evan and Ben (and William and Jack) have rousing mating sessions full of passion and love.
With the remaining 4 volumes in my overflowing TBR, I'm looking forward to more of the Gladstone pack.

I really enjoyed many aspects of this book. The characters were amazing, and the plot was well thought out. That being said, it wasn't without flaws. It dragged a lot for the first half as it bordered on info dumping for the world. Also, it felt like the author used literally every genitalia euphemism that exists and made the scenes come off as amateur. Also, I never say this but it could have done with less adult scenes. They were... Excessive even for me. I'm hoping it is just first book syndrome and the next ones will be better.

I am reviewing the first three books in this series all at once, as they all receive the same 3-star rating in my opinion. The author has a very distinct writing style. It is quite formal and stilted. Everyone speaks in complete sentences and uses the most polite "tone" of voice. It all felt very "Stepford Wife-ish" to me. The attempts at sexual innuendo were childish and kind of creepy to read. The insta-love "MATE!!!" got old real fast. Each pairing began with the "MATE!!!" and 5 days of non-stop sex. Really??? No getting to know their "Luna-blessed" partners before succumbing to repeated sexual encounters for days on end? There was chapter after chapter devoted to the sexual encounters between mates. While the storylines were intriguing and potentially suspenseful (there were so many subplots and side stories - it was quite complex trying to remember who was paired with who and who was related to who), when the climax finally arrives, it is squelched pretty quickly and on to another conflict. But let's devote multiple chapters to the sexual shenanigans of all the mated parties, shall we? More story and less sex is what these books needed. AND, the complete story has still not been told by the end of the third book!! Each book sets the scene for the next book, so you have to continue reading to resolve the issues from the previous book. Some issues are hinted at that are not resolved until the last book. You have to read book #4 to tie up all the multiple plots and storylines, I assume.

I've read this series several times, because I love he characters and the multiple plot lines. This book introduces us to the various pack members as they build the Gladstone pack. There's a connection to nature and the earth mixed with innate kindness and cooperation that makes the society one in which I wished I lived.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating world construction
Reviewed in Italy on January 29, 2021
A very complete and detailed world, with fascinating construction of wolf shifter dynamics, effects of virtual genocide of an antique society, and historical impact on a changed social system.
Not particularly rich in emotional involvement, except for a few passages, but definitely based on interpersonal relationships and acceptance, or rejection, of those relationships by the culture surrounding them.
In some places, this reads more like a summary of historical events or a list of happenings instead of a work of fiction, while in others it can go way beyond steamy, but the base storyline and plot are quite well thought out.

5.0 out of 5 stars Extremely good, intense shifter story with a twist!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on June 30, 2018
This is the first book I have read by the author and it definitely won't be the last.
The writing was detailed, consistent and extremely easy to read. Unfortunately life got in the way and interrupted me so I had to read this over a couple of days but in truth, given the opportunity I would have read this in one sitting.
The characters were well developed and easy to identify once you got past the first 50 or so pages. Initially I found it confusing and I didn't understand the significance of the difference people and the timeline.
As the story progressed the pieces started to fit together and not only did they make sense, but it all provided a fantastic historical backdrop to the current events portrayed.
I can fully appreciate readers becoming frustrated in the beginning, as the different bits the author was writing about different people at seemingly unrelated times in history. I did. In fact I nearly abandoned the story and relegated it to the "sacked off" pile.
All I can say is persevere through the first part and stick with it. All of a sudden you'll realise that you've been reading sections that make send the story starts to make sense.

Tbh that's the only negative point I have. The rest of the book flowed, there was history that helped understanding and the characters were awesome. I'm a bit in love with Ben, but his love and commitment for Evan was adorable. Have to say, as a more mature reader it was brilliant to read about an older couple discovering one another and finding love, happiness and an amazing sex life in their later years. Made a nice change that it wasn't all about guys in their 20's and 30's.

I would absolutely recommend this book to both first time shifter readers or to those, like myself, who have read and enjoyed a lot of shifter stories already. This one has a few new little twists which add to the story and make for an enjoyable tale.?
So go for it and don't be put off if you find it confusing or disjointed at the start. Keep reading, it's well worth it and if you enjoy it half as much as I did, it will be another 5*'s in the bank.

    Enjoy xxx
