Expendables: A Young Adult Dystopian Novel (The Wall Series Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 190 ratings

One girl. A corrupt government. A secret that could shatter a country.

London is divided by a lethal barrier. Inside, the rich live in privilege, supported by the corrupt government. Outside, people starve and children are taken by the government—never to be seen again.

Twelve years ago, Aleesha narrowly escaped capture when her mother mysteriously disappeared. She survives on her wits, trusting no one. But when a rebel organization called the Chain offers her the opportunity to uncover her mother’s fate and her father’s identity, she jumps at the chance.

After all, she has nothing left to lose.

Trey’s days are spent at an exclusive boarding school, trying—and failing—to live up to his family’s expectations. Then one day, the government come for him. On the run, he stumbles into a world of poverty and violence he never knew existed.

The Chain offer him safety—at a price.

When the Chain forces Aleesha and Trey to team up, Aleesha is furious. If there’s one thing worse than an impossible mission, it’s having to drag along a boy with zero street smarts. But when events take a devastating turn, Trey may be the only one who can save her.

In a dark, twisted game of cat-and-mouse, Aleesha must decide whether to fight for herself or for her people, and whether to follow her head or her heart.

The Wall Series is a complete dystopian series that will keep you turning the pages long into the night. Read it if you enjoy thrilling action, slow-burn romance, complex, flawed characters, and intense emotion.

After climate change floods most of Europe, Britain finds itself cut off from the rest of the world. One hundred years later there are still devestating food shortages and population problems, and the population has been divided into those Inside the walls of what is left of London and those Outside. Told from the perspective of 2 different teens from varying backgrounds, both find themselves at odds with society and one another. An intriguing read, this book is geared towards the upper end of the YA market. There is implied (off the page) sex, and one of the characters struggles with drug addiction. However, there is lots of action and a hint of a possible romance in future books. It’s a fun read for those who enjoyed Hunger Games and Divergent.

I really enjoyed this book. Right from the beginning it grabbed me in. It was hard to put it down (like having to go to bed) wondering what was going to happen next.
This is definitely one of the better dystopian novels I have read. Plus it takes place in London which is another reason to like it. I look forward to reading the next book in the Wall series.

This story only gets better as you keep reading it, and for dystopian lovers, it's very enjoyable. The world presented is complex and interesting, characters are well developed and they each have an interesting background. I totally recommend it!

From the first few pages I was all in. I haven’t been this hooked on a dystopian series since Hunger Games and Divergent. The characters are multi-leveled and grow throughout the novel. You will find no flat characters in this book. This story made me laugh, cry, few for the characters, and kept me on the edhge of my seat the whole time. When I finished the final chapter, I immediately bought the next two books.
This is worth the read and I have a feeling the next book is going be equally as good.

I had a bit of a rocky start with this book. I kept having this feeling as if I had been dropped into a story a bit late. The world-building came off as more of an “information-dump” in the beginning and the character introductions seemed too quick and made for a jarring first few chapters. I’m happy, however, to say that I decided to scroll through a few reviews of the book and came across one that pointed out that you needed to read the prequel, Outsider, first. So, I took a break from Expendables about 25% of the way through it and decided to give the prequel a shot and voilà…

From then on, it’s like the entire story snapped into focus! I would absolutely suggest reading Outsider first. It’s short (only 5 chapters) and the “prequel” label could easily be removed and those five chapters added to Expendables as a better opening. To each their own I suppose.

I truly enjoyed the alternating POV and I liked how Aleesha and Trey weren’t your typical dystopian couple with one or both of them being total badasses. They had flaws and were more relatable because of it. Plus, the fact that this novel is set in a futuristic dystopian London completely energized me and had me devouring chapter after chapter.

I’m excited to see where book two, Infiltrators, takes our two MC’s and now I have a new series to add to my 2020 TBR List.

*I was provided a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I very much enjoyed the beginning of the book but as I neared the middle and end, parts of the plot began to bother me. I’m not sure if I’ll keep reading. I like the overall premise of the book in that there is an outside society that is wrecked and the ideal inside society keeping people out And pretending they don’t exist. Still, I’m not sure I trust the author to develop the story well enough through the end of this since there were several things about this book that bothered me. Overall, it was a good book. I think right now, I’m just looking for something better.

The author obviously knows London quite well. I had a lot of fun 'tracing' the route that Aleesha and Trey followed through the tube.. (check out the london underground/tube map to see where they went) The Chaos of melting of the global icecaps has wrought havoc on London, and it obviously has affected much of the rest of the world as well. So.. is Aleesha really the daughter of the leader of the CHAIN? one would perhaps think so, but who knows. and WHY can Trey and Aleesha go through the wall.. I WANT TO KNOW !

Even though the author is very clear this book is nothing more than fiction, the reading of it will have you thinking about possibilities. There have not been many novels that moved me to the point of tears; however, this is one of them. I certainly didn't expect the scene either! Beware of it! I want to note that I didn't enjoy Trey's character, at first. As a whole, he grew the most of any other character and then I just loved him. I'm super excited to find out what happens next with these two!

“Sorry, this is only the second time I’ve done this.” I [Trey] swallow nervously. The Wall is only a couple of metres away. Aleesha smiles, and for the first time it seems genuine. “The second time is the worst.” Then she grabs my hand and pulls me forward."

    Top character pick: Samson⁣

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this incredible series. I went into this with a familiar feel as I have been reading A LOT of Dystopian in lockdown, however what I wasn't expecting was to be completely wrong about my predictions of Aleesha's parents, her wall jumping abilities, and even the direction of the series. ⁣
In the end, I'm glad it was different. It was incredibly written, and kept me hooked until the next book. Very memorable characters with a well written bittersweet ending. Which I must say... I wasn't quite prepared for.⁣

A gripping page turner that I enjoyed from start to finish, even if my heart did break occasionally! I would definitely recommend this for any dystopian fans!

Whilst this book was not the type of fiction I would normally read, l really enjoyed it. The book was well written with a believable and intriguing concept. I think the writing style would appeal to young people. It was exciting and sometimes shocking and I was quickly drawn into the storyline. I liked the way the book ended leaving you wanting to know more.

5.0 out of 5 stars A subtle but gripping page turner.

The Expendables is a dystopian novel set in future London. It's not the kind of book I would usually read, I've been turned off by authors labouring to showcase all the detail of their fictional worlds at the expense of character and plot. So that makes me a harder nut to crack.

By the end of the first chapter, I was seriously cracked.

The author subtly introduces the right level of detail to bring the world to life, without sacrificing the story for the sake of gadgets or concepts. It builds naturally around the action but doesn't eclipse it, keeping the focus firmly on the characters.

Expendables is set in a divided London where a physical barrier segregates the population in to the haves and the have-nots. The wealthy, genetically optimised and privileged population live in safety on the Inside. While the poor, homeless and hopeless struggle outside in brutish conditions.

We're introduced to our main protagonists Aleesha, a street-smart, feisty outsider and Trey a foppish but well meaning schoolboy from the 'Inside.'
Aleesha is being blackmailed into working as a spy, addicted to 'Tronk' and living precariously with the up and coming leader of a local gang. When she accidentally discovers that she can pass through the wall unharmed, complications increase.
Meanwhile Trey, finds his sheltered life thrown into chaos, when he is forced to flee the school and go on the run to avoid being punished for an unknown crime.

As the story unfolds, circumstances bring Trey and Aleesha together as they try to unravel who and what they are.

This is the first in a series and I look forward to more!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great plot and interesting ideas

I really enjoyed the fast paced plot and read this over a couple of days of the winter holidays - loved it and can't wait for the next one!
I also found the ideas interesting; without giving to much away the scenario of an alternative London and the reasons for the Wall felt far fetched but plausible. So it got me thinking and created some interesting discusion as well as being a good read.
