Fighting to Survive: A Dystopian Action Adventure (The Casey Russo Chronicles Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.6 out of 5 stars 24 ratings

He’s been in hiding for 10 years. But the time for hiding is over…

Casey Russo thought he’d put his dark past behind him. Working for a friend at his remote farm kept him far away from the tyrannical Cosa Nostra—the mafia overlords who overthrew the U.S. in the ashes of The Last War. But you can’t run forever. When the Cosa Nostra abducts his friend’s son, Casey knows he’s the only one who can keep the boy from meeting a bloody end in the fighting pits…

With the help of a foul-mouthed teen girl with one hell of a right hook, the rescue mission takes Casey deep into enemy territory. To steal back the boy from the heart of corruption, Casey’s only chance is to join the rebellion he hoped to ignore. And achieving his mission may just involve taking down an empire…

Fighting to Survive is the pulse-pounding first book in a series of dystopian sci-fi novels. If you like white-knuckle action, complex characters, and original worlds, then you’ll love Rick Pine’s gritty adventure.

With his first fiction novel, Rick Pine brings together a dystopian world that feels both futuristic in its evolution of crime and associated technology but also nostalgic with its noir feel and focus on Mafia-style crime families. As the first in a series the bad guys don't really get their comeuppance in the end, but there's a feeling of hope that follows the sullen Casey Russo. If you enjoyed Sin City, with its untouchable villains and the lone soldier able to stand against them, you'll love this story.

This was a fast-paced apocalyptic thriller that will have readers turning to the last page. For a first book, author Rick Pine has a great series on his hands with memorable characters, a punchy storyline, and non-stop action.

Casey Russo is a man with a shady past and he has been in hiding for over a decade. Russo has been working on a farm out in the middle of nowhere and keeping far away from the reigning overlords who are now in charge of the United States of America after The Last War brought the country to ruin.

The Cosa Nostra are oppressive and vicious with their ruling. From stealing children to making men fight to the death, there is nothing these people won't do to ensure that their rule is absolute.

In today's world, you can't hide forever, and when the Cosa Nostra come knocking on Casey's front door to confront the man who has been offering him shelter, Casey hides, until the man's son Billy is taken from him.

At that point, it's all out war between Casey Russo and the Cosa Nostra. The only way to keep Billy out of the Cosa Nostra's death pits is to fight for them.

Casey enters the fighting pits and meets a young teenager named Alex who has also been taken from her family. Alex is a survivor as well, and she's merciless in the fighting ring. After all, it's fight or be killed.

I really enjoyed learning about Alex's character and I can see this dynamic duo taking things into a second book for Casey Russo.

Congratulations to Rick Pine. You've got a great series in the making here and I'm already looking forward to the next book!

This is a great book from a first time fiction author. I love the noir feel of the book even though it takes place in the future. So many books have gone the "dystopian future" route but this one holds true to the action novels of David Baldacci and Michael Connelly.

Thoroughly enjoyed this book. Normally books about dystopian futures are always about mega corporations but this surprised me with a fresh and interesting take on the genre. Can't wait for the sequel.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fighting to Survive clunks into high speed and literally drags you into the storyline...

Set in the near future after a global war which has changed America into a country of sectors, many controlled by the Cosa Nostra, a truly nasty mafia like conglomerate which controls access to almost everything we take for granted, electricity, fresh food, oil, gas, cars....

Casey Russo, the main character has a past, one which he likes to keep hidden, his new life living in a barn on his friends farm seems to go well for him until one fateful day the Costa Nostra come visiting and demand a debt which the farm owner and Casey’s friend George has wracked up and has no way of settling. The demands are cruel, Billy, Georges son is taken hostage until George can find the payment. Billy will be taken to ‘The Pitts’ outside what was Cincinna, they are literally pitts where unfortunates fight to the death - like a futuristic Roman gladatorial arena.

George and his wife don’t know what to do until Casey volunteers to travel to the Cosa Nostra’s headquarters to plea for Billy’s life and his return. Little does Casey know that this will lead him into a dangerous heist and the uncovering of his true past.

I wasn’t quite sure what to expect when I started reading this book, the idea is pleasantly different for dystopian fiction and after a slow start, the book clunks quickly into high speed gear and literally drags you into the storyline as Casey goes on his mission.

I’m really looking forward to seeing where this series goes!

Thoroughly enjoyable read. The pacing was great with little to no filler. I felt everything was in there for a reason. Only real negative point is that the prologue is kinda required to understand some points of the main story which you get for free anyway. Also, I felt it ended too soon - though it could be because it’s difficult to put down once you start. Otherwise consider this 4.5 stars
