THE DETECTIVE
Eric Ward is forced to retire from the police when he discovers he suffers from glaucoma but qualifies as a solicitor (lawyer) and sets up his practice on the Quayside in Newcastle, where he deals with the seamier side of the law. When he marries a wealthy young woman she attempts to persuade him to settle in Northumberland and work with wealthier clients but he stubbornly refuses to give up his criminal practice in Newcastle. Although she draws him into the world of high finance he still insists on continuing at the Quayside—which causes tensions within his marriage, and lead to fatal consequences.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 17, 2019It’s been two years since attorney / solicitor Eric Ward dealt with the murder at Sedleigh Hall. His early onset glaucoma isn’t any better; in fact, his eye specialist has just recommended an operation that has a 50 / 50 chance of either success or blindness (this is approximately 1980, so laser surgery hasn’t been invented yet). Eric has qualified as a solicitor, and he’s working as such full-time at the firm of Francis, Shaw and Elder in Newcastle.
He has an appointment with the son for a longstanding client of the firm, Amos Saxby. The youngest son Jack wants to talk about the Saxby farms, and neither Eric nor his assistant can find a number of the Saxby files. What Jack wants is to take his father on in court – the farm promised to him (and owned by his mother) has been taken back. Complicating the case is that Paul Joseph, son of the law firm’s principal, had his hands all over the old files and the old case, and neglected to file the proper legal documents.
The firm is at legal and reputation risk, Jack Saxby is determined to go to court, his mother has a stroke, and his father loves grandstanding in the courtroom. And then Jack Saxby is killed late at night in a hit-and run, and one or both of his older brothers might be the culprits.
In “The Farming Murder” by English mystery writer Roy Lewis, solicitor Ward delves deeper into what’s happened, and he discovers a family filled with secrets, large egos, greed, and a desire for revenge. And a new kind of seabed-mining investment proposal seems to be playing a role.
Lewis is the author of some 60 other mysteries, novels, and short story collections. His Inspector Crow series includes “A Lover Too Many,” “Murder in the Mine,” “The Woods Murder,” “Error of Judgment,” and “Murder for Money,” among others. The Eric Ward series, of which “The Sedleigh Hall Murder” is the first (and originally published as “A Certain Blindness” in 1981), includes 17 novels. The Arnold Landon series is comprised of 22 novels. Lewis lives in northern England.
There’s at least one more Eric Ward mystery published by Lewis, although I believe there are others being prepared for publication. “The Farming Murder” is a classic British mystery, filled with dark motives, unexpected twists, and a sympathetic detective who isn’t a policeman but a lawyer.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 21, 2019Roy Lewis' book 2 of his new Eric Ward series, continues chronologically as Ward becomes a fully qualified solicitor in the law firm. His glaucoma issues are still bothering him and are really a cheap tease by the author, as is his relationship with the delectable and rich, but much younger Ann. The legal issues relating to the inheritance of a farming property are detailed and an integral part of the plot. It is difficult to say too much about the story, without being spoiler. However, the characterizations are well defined and the narrative is expertly crafted, providing a positive reading experience.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 22, 2021This book is just as good as the first. The main character is very much a person you could meet any day. Ward is now a lawyer in the company and deals with a very unfunctional family business, that comes to a totally unexpected end. Very well written, life size characters, a totally enjoying read, even though rather sad because of the dooming blindness of Ward. Or will he recover ? We will see next book. This one is a finished story, not a cliffhanger. I think even if you did not read the first, it is quite enjoyable. I already ordered the third one.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 2, 2021I was not into the story much and was thinking perhaps I didn’t find a good new series. However, the latter half was a good pace and I’ll give number three a try. I’m hoping in number three Ward is relieved of the glaucoma. The glaucoma attacks don’t add anything except give me an indication a critical moment is coming. 🤫🥱
- Reviewed in the United States on August 26, 2019Almost novella length and partly transparent in terms of whodunnit! However, the character of the protagonist is so finely drawn and the legal complexity so convoluted that they save the story from the category of potboiler! all in all a very enjoyable read!
- Reviewed in the United States on July 10, 2019Another great read from this author, thought I knew all the answers, but i was wrong again. I read the 1st in series and now the second. if you like a good mystery this book is for you
- Reviewed in the United States on July 19, 2019What I liked was that it held my interest all the way through. Very good reading.
What I didn't care for is that Eric Ward (as well as detectives Crow in that series) are portrayed as rather gruesome characters. They're the only ones I relate to while reading these books and would like to picture someone a little more pleasant looking and less depressed with their lives.
Either way, I will continue reading Roy Lewis' books. Honestly enjoyed them that much.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 15, 2019Very dangerous things. A young farmer is refused his right to purchase a farm his mother had given him option to . Exposing the frauds is a delicate matter that Eric Ward finds himself involved in . Terrific story.

Really enjoyed the simplicity and the fllow of the narative. The story has a real 80s feel about it and the lines of investigation follow the theme .

5.0 out of 5 stars A Good Read
I have read many of Roy Lewis' novels and found this the best yet. There are several strands which keep you interested and wondering. The story moves at a gentle pace but is not too slow. I like the characterisation which made it easy to follow the story line. I recommend this as asatisfying read.
