4.5 out of 5 stars 921 ratings

He’s trapped in hell. He’s slave to a demon. He’s going to make them sorry.

Immortal wizard, Otto Schneider misjudged his deal with Daniel badly. Now he’s a demon’s puppet and kidnapping people because he has no choice …

… or so the demons think.

Forced to perform dread work or watch others suffer, he must bide his time, but millennia of being unopposed has made the demons complacent and they turn their back on him at their peril.

Otto intends to find a way back to Bremen, his wife, his new student, Katja, and everything he loves, but he cannot do it without help. Who can you trust when you are already in hell?

Amid a web of deceit and betrayal, our wizard must find a way to overcome the ancient magic that binds him and strike back against the demons who threaten to invade the Earth.

The defender of Bremen is coming back and he’s bringing hell with him!

When Steve Higgs wrote his debut novel, Paranormal Nonsense, he was a captain in the British Army. He would like to pretend that he had one of those careers that must be blacked out and generally denied by the government, and that he has to change his name and move constantly because he is still on the watch list in several countries. In truth, though, he started out as a mechanic - not like Jason Statham in the film by that name, sneaking around as a hitman, but more like one of those sleazy guys who charges a fortune and keeps your car for a week even though the only thing you went in for was a squeaky door hinge.

At school, he was largely disinterested in all subjects except creative writing, for which he won his first prize at the age of ten. However, calling it the first prize he won suggests that there were other prizes, which is not the case. Awards may yet come, but in the meantime, he enjoys writing mystery and thriller novels and claims to have more than a hundred books forming a restless queue in his mind because they are desperate to be written.

Now retired from the military, he lives in southeast England with a duo of lazy sausage dogs. Surrounded by rolling hills, brooding castles, and vineyards, he doubts he'll ever leave, the beer is just too good.

Will the captured familiars escape? Can Otto trust the SIA/AIB? Is the new leader of the SIA/AIB turning into the guy he just deposed? Moving on to the next book.

This entire series is very captivating and entertaining. I had a difficult time putting it down! I waited eagerly for each successive book to the series and am looking forward to the next to be published. I am picky about what I read and often will not finish a book let alone a series but Steve Higgs is an exceptional writer. He is very descriptive and keeps the action going in a believable scenario. I have also read all of his Blue Moon Detective series and find it not only as captivating but also hilarious.

Part Three in this series moves just.as.quickly as the previous ones. Otto is bound to Daniel the Demon and is ready to leAve a revolt of.some.sort to get the Familiars back to their previous homes and lives. As usual, a few things don't go as planned and a small.revolt turns into.something much larger. And there's always someone to betray him. You'll have to read it to find out more. Another great read from Steve Higgs.

I save 5 stars for something that is great literature, so don't be misled by the 4 star rating I give this. I thought, though, that Demon Bound, marked as the 5th in the series, with this being the 6th, had some spoilers for this book, but that's alright, it doesn't really hurt anything.
Steve HIggs is one of the main reasons I keep my Kindle Unlimited account. As others who use it probably know, there's a great many books in Unlimited which simply aren't that good. But every so often, one finds a gem of an author, and for me, Steve Higgs is one of those gems. His various series never fail to entertain me.

In this case, we are once again dealing with the demon realm and Mr. Higgs keeps me turning the pages. If you've never read Steve Higgs, this one isn't the one to start with, but fans of his know this, and will read it in order.

So, the most important thing to know is, it's another really good Steve Higgs book, and if you haven't read him before, do so, but start at the beginning of a series. (This is marked book 6 of 6, though I don't know if he'll return to this one.)
Actually, I would recommend to begin at the beginning and start with the Blue Moon investigations series.

You will need coffee....real coffee...not decaf because this book will keep you up way too late. I feel this book should have been the fourth in the series, but, it answered a lot of questions that I had while reading books four and five. I was cheering, and scared and mad, and yes I ugly cried, but I know good will defeat evil and Mr. Higgs will make sure that happens. Great book.

Books 1,2 and 5 deal with the wizard. So I read these and skipped over the Warewolf books, but I will read these next. There is a logical snafu though: If the gods/demons can already transport to earth, why would they wait until the curse wears off and they become mortal to take over Earth? It seems like it would be better to take it over while they were immortal. Although I think I may have just figured it out: when the curse wears off, their dimension becomes one with Earth, so that at that point they have to either blend in with mankind or enslave them.

Very enjoyable concept across the series and clever linking of the main characters. Storylines beginning to duplicate though hence four rather than five stars but I will read on.
