From the authors of the novel Hunter Killer, now a major motion picture starring Gerard Butler and Gary Oldman.

"This team spins a great tale." —W.E.B. Griffin

Commander Jonathan Ward and his crew on the old attack sub Spadefish are on one last mission. A US Navy SEAL team is inserted into South America. Their orders are to destroy the secret laboratories of the world’s most notorious drug cartel, and the Spadefish has been sent to provide assistance.

But Juan de Santiago, the violent billionaire drug lord, has an entire private army and a futuristic new mini-submarine of his own. He will do anything to protect his empire.

And he knows the Americans are coming...

Final Bearing is the first book in the Hunter Killer series. Drawing upon decades of experience on nuclear submarines, bestselling authors Wallace and Keith present a suspense thriller perfect for fans of Tom Clancy, Rick Campbell, and Clive Cussler.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Novelist Keith and retired submariner Wallace agreeably join forces in this thriller of submarines versus drug lord Juan de Santiago, whose ambitions seem to run to being a Colombian Saddam Hussein. Facing him are a DEA agent who has been fighting Santiago for years, and Bill Beaman, the leader of a team of Navy SEALs operating off the aging attack submarine Spadefish, commanded by Jonathan Ward. The action proceeds and in some places wanders from Colombia to Seattle, Washington, and across the land and under the sea, too, realizing a full quota of vivid combat scenes and a comparatively high body count along the way. Disbelief that drug-lord dictators could find high-tech subs handy must be suspended, but once it is, heck, relax and enjoy. And if you're aware of what sailors feel when a beloved ship reaches the end of her career, the book eventually achieves real power. Above average for its salty breed. Roland Green

I have now read 3 of the books and my overall response is positive. the 1st book introduces the characters and backstories which is understandable and at the same time the stories (books) move along with the same cast of characters doing their parts to keep us all safe from the ’bad guys’. The 3rd book about Cuba I felt was filled with stereotypical, almost comically so, characters of Latin American origin. I do prefer writings that pit professionals against one another. As a Navy brat I do appreciate the stories of bases around the world, many of which I spent my childhood while my father sailed away for months at a time.

Final Bearing (The Hunter Killer Series Book 1) my first read from authors George Wallace & Don Keith. Reminiscent of the best works of Tom Clancy and Andrew Watts, an incredibly ,well-developed, well-written book. The primary characters are well developed. A captivating, page-turning, well-written read. A must-read book! “I received a Kindle copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review." The gifting of this book did not affect my opinion of it. I look forward to reading more from this author. Dangerous Grounds: The Hunter Killer Series, Book 2 is next on my TBR list. (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 - July 24, 2018).

These tales are absorbing adventures set on submarines. I have several of them. Recently I picked one up and read for an hour or so before it registered that I had read it before; they are that shallow. What bugs me most about "Final Bearing," though, is the incompetent editing in some places. Couldn't they afford to let someone who knows Spanish give it a run-through? Then they wouldn't have the flunkies calling their boss "El Jefe," such as answering "sí, El Jefe," when nobody would say that in Spanish. It would be "Sí, mi Jefe," or "Sí, Jefe." Even worse was the middle-school level error of "buenas días." It should be "buenos."
And it is appalling to read in a supposedly professionally written book that a boat in a harbor was "peddling along." Doesn't the author even know the difference between the verbs "peddle" and "pedal"?

Thoroughly enjoyable plot that also highlighted the dangers faced by the armed forces and law agencies in peacetime. If I have one criticism its that on the submarine some of the info was a bit technical(not to mention really scary) but I would rather this that a skimming overview of overworked and outdated nuclear power propulsion. Well deserved plaudits to the authors.

A great yarn, liked the way the story line moved between the 5 main groups keeping the interest level high.
The little repeat of the beginning at the end bought home how hard it is to get on top of the drug trade, after all the hard work put in by the various groups life still goes on.
Presentation of the various technical aspects was done in a easy way to follow & understand.

Wallace and Kieth. Final Bearing (200120) Three stories running at once, it seemed, but eventually they were coordinated to provide essential background to an interesting start to this book. At 54%, some of it has been hard going and in spite of the super action at this point, this reader is having a little trouble keeping up with all the various characters, in all three stories, which are indeed linked but splash at the continuity, especially as far as the seagoing aspect is concerned. Big difficulties, at times, sorting out which story I am in. So many characters, so many names, so many situations, eventually one gets there but it seems clear that there are different authors contributing to the tale, perhaps not quite knitting into each other’s contributions. It is still pretty riveting but tiresome waiting for it to clear itself for us 'less-in intelligent' brings! The swap from one tale , in a different but associate issue, but outside the present theme, makes for confusion in this reader. Still struggling with this 'miss match' of stories, always interesting and sometimes thrilling but often suddenly interposed into the then current theme, which, is to say-at the least, monetarily confusing. I liked the 'stories' but wish they had been more 'connected or linked immediately' into the main theme. It was, in the end, a tidy affair and I DID enjoy the read.
