4.1 out of 5 stars 119 ratings

Three books in one 1200 page epic package! The Fire Mages ~ The Fire Mages' Daughter ~ The Second God

In the Fire Mages: A determined girl. A cranky mage. An unwanted heir. A mysterious magical city.
Kyra’s always been drawn to the magic of spellpages. She’s determined to leave her small village far behind and become a scribe, wielding the power of magic through her pen. But a simple favour for her sister goes disastrously awry, destroying Kyra's dreams in an instant.

In The Fire Mages' Daughter: A girl fighting her destiny. A living god. A war with the Blood Clans.
Seventeen-year-old Drina just wants to hide away with her books, but as the daughter of two powerful mages and heir to the ruler of Bennamore, her wishes are rarely considered. Summoned to the capital, she is plunged into a maelstrom of politics and power struggles. The only compensation is Arran, the handsome bodyguard she grows to love.

In The Second God: Rival gods at war. Mind-bonded giant beasts. A fanatical golden army. Dangerous blood magic.
On the southern Plains of Kallanash, a new force is arising — a vast golden army, raised in ferocious discipline, and fanatical followers of another kind of god, who is determined to spread his power into an empire, and will let nothing stand in his way. To combat the threat, Drina, Arran and Ly-haam must set aside their personal differences and combine their talents in a uniquely dangerous way which will test their heroism to its limits. How much will they have to sacrifice to save their country?

Review

Praise for the books in this collection:

'I could not put this book down. The pacing was perfect and kept me engaged from beginning to end.' 'I think anyone looking for a fantasy story with a character driven plot and strong female lead character will love this story.' - - J R Boles, author of Bringer of Light

'If you enjoy high fantasy in a unique setting with cool magic and well-conceived, multi-dimensional characters, with high personal stakes and a well-done romance, I highly recommend The Fire Mages.' - - Kyra Halland, author of the Daughter of the Wildings series.

'I enjoyed this one a lot. Although the pacing is slow in parts, there's plenty going on, from Kyra's initial steps into scholarship, through her introduction to courtly intrigue, to her gradual and growing understanding of the nature of love and friendship and family. And there are enough twists and turns to keep things interesting along the way.' - - Rachel Cotterill, Strange Charm.'I loved Kyra's world. It was full of women being real people, not just serving wenches and prostitutes. There were female stablehands, translators, wagoners, inn managers and guards--just about any job you could imagine had women working alongside the men.' - - Marina Finlayson, author of Twiceborn.

'Interesting mythology.' 'I can't wait to read other works by this author. I highly recommend this book for any fantasy lover.' - - Mindy Wall of Books, Books and More Books blog

"The plot is masterfully crafted, unpredictable but with clear cause and effect to be seen in hindsight. It is full of action, drama and intrigue, well-balanced such that there is never too much of one mood or approach before advances in the plot move things onwards." - Alice Lieper, Ally's Desk blog

"This book's protagonist Drina, is one of the more identifiable protagonists I've had the pleasure to meet in a book, trying to juggle the impossible demands of her position in court, and the basic raw emotions she has for the man she loves, and for her mother." - Michael Omer, author of Sleepless

"Succinctly and beautifully written, the reader is totally immersed into thecharacters, their lives and their challenges. Each chapter brings moreto light, and there are never dull portions that you have to slogthrough to get to the next good part.
Links to people and placesfrom earlier books in the Brightmoon Annals are lovely to come acrossfor fans of the series. This enables a deeper reader experience as youanticipate outcomes based upon what you have discovered in previousstories.
This book, and all the Brightmoon Annals series deliverwhat I want most from fantasy novels; authentic characters, a believable world/society, gripping stories and the scope for more to come."
- ZDeeps on Amazon

From the Author

All the books in the Brightmoon Annals are complete stories, and may be read independently of one another, with the exception of The Second God, which is a sequel. However, the later books contain fun references to events, characters and objects from the earlier books. For best enjoyment, the recommended reading order is:
  1. The Plains of Kallanash
  2. The Fire Mages
  3. The Mages of Bennamore
  4. The Magic Mines of Asharim
  5. The Fire Mages' Daughter
  6. The Dragon's Egg
  7. The Second God (Sequel to The Fire Mages' Daughter)
  8. Findo Gask's Apprentice
  9. The Dragon Caller
  10. The Return of the Mages

I live in the beautiful Highlands of Scotland with my husband. I like chocolate, whisky, my Kindle, massed pipe bands, long leisurely lunches, chocolate, going places in my campervan, eating pizza in Italy, summer nights that never get dark, wood fires in winter, chocolate, the view from the study window looking out over the Moray Firth and the Black Isle to the mountains beyond. And chocolate. I dislike driving on motorways, cooking, shopping, hospitals.

I also write traditional Regency romances as Mary Kingswood.

Absolutely love this collection. The characters, particularly the females, were strong and believable. I'll definitely follow up on more from this author.

If you like fantasy that makes you think about how your world could be different if magic was available, then you'll like this series. Each one is very different in story and yet the all have strong female characters. Sexual issues have refreshing different cultural ramifications that also add much to the stories. If you always wanted to be able to communicate mind to mind with others or animals, this will give you a glimpse into that world. Very real with great characters.

This is a good author writing trash. There is a story behind the trash and the cultures invented are interesting. The magic described is also interesting and thought out with enough mystery to engage your imagination. I can only say the trash you need to endure spoils the essence and keeps me from recommending this series.

Thoroughly enjoyed this collection. Author weaves stories in such a way you just kind of flow with it. Hard to put down. I enjoy books that expands one’s consciousness, of other cultures and practices and these series does that effortlessly.

The sex? For me it was part of the story. As you read along, you 'get it' why it happened that way. If you stop because a part did not agree with your beliefs, time to open up and keep going coz eventually things unfold.

It's like... once there was an apple tree and it bore apples. Then someone wanted other fruits, in the apple tree, and came up with grafting. Similarly, the sex scenes here are nothing new, they are already happening, or happened long long ago... just that
authors are now openly including it in their books (coz we're now open minded).

Thank you Pauline Ross for an amazing collection.

I really love the Pauline M. Ross series and as this was on offer I decided on getting it rather than individual books.

The only thing I would say is that the other books in the series do add some context and are also worth reading - in terms of writing order, these are books #2 #5 and #7. Books 3 and 4 in particular increase the general understanding of the magic system if nothing else (there is one magic system but different communities use it in different ways).

Loved the books. I thought book 3 was a bit slow and I flipped the pages for a lot of it, although the last bit grabbed me again. There were a few holes, like Drina not being able to cook, yet having Ly’s memories and being able to communicate with each other.
