Five Dead Men: Crime in the south of France (Madame Renard Investigates Book 2) Kindle Edition

4.1 out of 5 stars 376 ratings

"Gripping and intelligent crime writing" - ramblingmads

"Cleverly crafted with an intriguing plot" - TheFrenchVillageDiaries

When the bodies of five men are discovered in a secret vault at the villa Belle Époque, suspicion falls upon the villa’s former owner, enigmatic Pascal Deveraux. Actor, gambler, general good-for-nothing - Pascal has lived a life of privilege and excess. But with no evidence to implicate him in murder, the case goes unsolved.

Called in to investigate the cold case, it’s not long before Margot’s enquiries re-open old wounds. Aided by
policière municipale, Alia Leon, the investigation moves swiftly from the smugglers’ trails of the Pyrenees to the cannabis clubs of Barcelona. And it’s there, in the dark medieval streets of the city’s Gothic Quarter, that someone finds a reason to silence her.

Ideal for readers of Martin Walker, Jean-Luc Bannalec, M.L. Longworth and Angela Wren.

The second Madame Reynard crime-stopping mystery did not disappoint. Pace was good and sides off main villain were surprisingly believable. Liked the whole story. Want to read #3!

Five Dead Men is book two in the Madame Renard Investgates series by Rachel Green. I read the first book and enjoyed it, so looked forward to reading this second book.

I really enjoy the mysterious plot in this and how the story twists and turns, keeping you guessing and turning the pages. The pacing was good. This was an easy read that I was able to finish relatively quickly.

I enjoyed the characters as well. Each person had a purpose and was well written. The dynamics of the relationships were intriguing to read. I think the characters were definitely a highlight of this book.

Overall, Five Dead Men is a solid mystery that thoroughly entertained me.

It is always good to be captured instantly into a fast paced tale. Evocative countryside and rural community combined with current criminality along with likeable characters meant that it was finished within a few hours of being started, interspersed with chores like cooking meals!

Mistakenly read out of order, though I am not sure if I would have read a second in this series.
The story is set in a tiny French village populated by trois hommes et un chien. (Pardon mon Franglais)
There are lots of gruesome killings and a lack of any real storyline.
