Follow Him Home: an mmm romance with a doctor, a lawyer, and a hitman (Lovers Rush Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.1 out of 5 stars 193 ratings

Could two be the magic number for keeping Peter's heart in one piece?

When a mysterious man walks into the emergency room, Dr. Peter Dawes could have never expected the turn his life was about to take. Drawn to the enigmatic Christian, he agrees to one date, but the more his former patient reveals about himself, the more Peter wonders if he should take a step away. When he's introduced to Christian's other lover, though - the more refined Victor - the charming man provides a counter-balance to Christian's emotive intensity and adds another incentive to stay.

Secrets shroud the would-be lovers, but so does the potential of romance with not just one, but two men. Before long, Peter finds himself immersed within an unfamiliar world.

The kind a hitman might call home.

This book started off slow, but quickly escalated to an interesting story line I found hard to put down. All three protagonists where well-developed and intriguing in their own way. Even the doctor Peter might seem bland on the surface, but his depths were revealed in the way he reacted to both Christian and Victor.

None of the men’s interactions develop as a traditional romance, but I still found the relationship arcs compelling. Christian’s revelations to Peter so soon after meeting jerked me out of the story a bit, but in retrospect, his motives were very clear and I’m not sure the author could have handled it much differently.

My biggest complaint is that Victor does not show up as a proper character earlier in the story. Though once he’s there, it’s as if all three men should never have been apart.

This was such a hard review to write, because I wanted to like this book so badly...and I still can't figure out completely why it didn't resonate with me. So here's my very subjective review, and I hope I'm explaining it well...

Follow Him Home is anything but a standard MMM romance, and that’s both a compliment and a bit of a hinder. In any ménage, there’s the risk of either leaving one person out of the ‘couple’, or not developing all characters equally. In this case, there’s not really a ménage in the first place, more like a three men having relationships with each other—but not as an actual threesome. To illustrate: there’s only one scene where they’re in bed with the three of them, and it’s all the way at the end.

The whole story is told from Peter’s perspective, and that means we get to know him quite well, but we only see Victor and Christian through his eyes. Christian and Victor already have a relationship, as also demonstrated in the prologue (the only part of the book written from Christian’s POV), which leaves Peter kind of on the outskirts for a long time. The attraction with both Christian and Victor is clear, but I never fully believed in a future for the three of them. Peter was the odd man out, in my opinion.

There’s instalove, but that doesn’t bother me, and neither does the fact that one may reason that Peter as a doctor should object more strongly to being involved with a hitman. I can live with things like that in fiction. It’s the part of the plot you simply don’t take to seriously.

What bugged me more was the writing, and it took me a while to figure out why. Technically, this book is very well written and aside from an incidental forgotten comma, there are no spelling errors. Yet at the same time the book’s rhythm falters regularly, for me at least. One aspect is the author’s tendency to not use character’s names but describe them as ‘the second man’, ‘the taller man’, etc. That kept jarring me out of the narrative.

Another aspect was the word choice. The style of writing is something I’m more used to seeing in ‘serious’ fantasy and SF fiction, not in MM romances. I noticed long, complicated words and sentences, a tendency to over-describe mundane actions, and using complicated words where simpler ones would have done the job as well. It’s not wrong, of course not, but it does take some getting used to. The formal tone of both the descriptions and the internal dialogue made it hard for me to emotionally connect with the characters. The POV was also more distant than I prefer.

This is highly subjective, of course. If you are a reader who prefers more literary works, this may be right up your alley. For me, it was a well-written read that left me emotionally cold, alas. I gave it three stars, because anything less seems unfair and doesn't do justice to the fact that this one was so subjective.

Christian and Victor are a couple in a bit of a different relationship. Christian finds Peter as he is a patient in the hospital Peter works at and takes him home. Now they are trying to navigate a relationship with three people while trying to stay alive. Christian seems to attract the wrong sort of people

I enjoyed experiencing the organic way these three lovers met and came together and accepted each other with love and care.

Something about this book is indescribably Brittish. I know Christian is Brittish but the whole book is as well even though it's set in Philadelphia. So far there was one Irishmen, an Italian and two other Brittish minor characters, yet the world placement and usage suggest that everyone should be not American, at least. The writing is so suggestive, in my opinion, that I want to suggest a rewrite just to fix it.

So we have a Doctor Poet, a Hitman and an Corporate Lawyer. It sounds like a bad joke, and partially it is. Christian isn't a likable character, nor is he completely dynamic. He remains a mystery until the end and Peter seems disturbingly content with this. Victor, there is no help for, whatsoever, but I was hoping Peter would come to his senses.

I found so much wrong with the nonverbal communication tool that is overused in this story. Everything meaningful is said with a look, or the eyes and it's done in italics, whhoooo, italics! Maybe Davies, feels that by not speaking the message is more powerful, but I feel more like it was an excuse to remain mysterious. It wasn't helpful, you have three men who barely understand each other trying to save the one who put the other two in mortal peril and everything is said with the eyes? Be realistic.

And the epilogue was absolute waste. Nevermind in all that useless suspense building, it failed to be consistent. That was the worst cliff hanger ever. I don't even care that it is one. I care that it was done poorly.

A hitman involved with regular people is one of my favorite tropes but this one didn't gell for me. Christian felt more like an undercover police officer. I know he didn't care for guns but I doubt a real hitman would bring a knife to a gunfight. The characters were interesting but I never accepted their roles. Peter telling his friend about Christin's criminal activities didn't work, even a naive doctor would know that is something you don't mention.

3.0 out of 5 stars Intriguing, but falls short
Reviewed in Australia on April 11, 2019
It felt like the author wasn’t quite sure what book they wanted to write.
For all that the story line features men meeting, dating, falling in love, the writing style chosen was at odds with a romance, it created distance between the reader and the characters, as well as being very dry reading. Nothing really resonated.
Said writing settle also felt like an attempt to write literature rather than romance, very verbose, and dense. And yet, ultimately, it saying a lot..or maybe it was a crime novel... except there wasn’t enough depth for that either.
It was a bit of a mishmash. The hit,an storyline was perhaps the least convincing; sure, lets trust some guy on the second date with a massive secret about how you play outside the law...
I did like that the setup for the relationships saw separate relationships develop between Peter and Christian, and then Peter and Victor. That was nice.
But ultimately, the lack of depth, covered as it was by dry, dense prose left me ho hum. Not he.ped by Peter. being the least interesting character, and the book being from his point of view.
There was potential, but ultimately, despite finishing, I never really engaged.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great potential but fell short for me
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 27, 2024
When I read the title, I thought this book had a lot of promise - but for me the story felt hurried and over simplified.

There didn't feel like any development of the relationships at all between the three characters - one minute Peter meets Christian for the first time, then he is immediately in love with him (and vice versa). The same with Victor - one minute Peter was in the kitchen meeting Victor for the first time, the next he was out on a romantic date with him. Maybe that was the intention and I know it doesn't bother some people but I really wanted to see how their relationships developed.

The story is told from Peter's perspective so although I did feel like I got to know him best, I felt this was missing with Victor and Christian.

There's also the fact that this described as a MMM novel yet the majority of the story involves three men having relationships with other, but not at the same time (other than at the very end of the story).

4.0 out of 5 stars Believable characters making an interesting trio

This was an interesting one. I always like a story with a Doctor in, not sure why but they just have sexy all over them. The 3 characters are all believable and likeable which makes the story work. I wish the sex scenes were spicier and more involved the 3 of them together. This is why it was a 4 star.
