Fool for Him (Foolish at Heart Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 14 ratings

Haunted by a history she can't rewrite, her heart is cracked and fragile—wrapped in the lies she's certain are true.

Teddy has played it safe for the last four years, avoiding romantic entanglements altogether. She spends her days working with her best friend at Mountain Time Art and hides behind her camera in her spare time. She's convinced the boundaries around her heart are necessary, and her life is fulfilling enough.

The day Judah St. Michaels enters the gallery, she's reminded her life could be more. Though, as gorgeous as the tall, handsome man in a suit may be, she's sure he's far from safe.

When the pull of the seductive man becomes all consuming, Teddy finds herself falling into temptation. But the deeper she gets, the louder her past demons become.

She's irreparable, and no good man deserves that.

"[Love is] a choice someone has to make over and over, every day." I have missed RC Martin so much, and I will always choose to be thrilled with her words. I was so pleased to get news that she had an ARC ready. I was a little...hmmm, not unsure, but .... surprised? that it was the reworking of an older title in her catalog. And that book, was probably my least favorite of hers. I really don't want to start this review this way - my least favorite RC Martin book is like my second favorite flavor of ice cream on a hot summer day. It's still pretty darn satisfying and still has a whole lot of poetry to be written about it.

Jude and Teddy, the way they should have been written from the start .... just makes me happy. Their story will now be a trilogy, if I recall correctly, and that's just more to love. This book ends not so much on a cliffhanger as at a natural breaking point, and I believe the second book will be out within a month or two of the official release of this one.

Theodora is a young woman just out of college with her dream job working in an art gallery, for two great cousins, Andrew and Teddy's adorable (and adoring) GBFF, Geoffrey. This version gives you even more of Geoffrey and his endearing relationship with Teddy. Judah is older, but not so much older that I would consider this an age gap romance. He is established in his career as a designer, set to one day take over his aunt's firm. He is rather gruff, as an alpha male who is sure he knows exactly what he wants out of life and love. Especially the latter, as in he wants nothing of it. He has a "type" for sure, and that type is of the beautiful variety who understand that he is not looking for a relationship. Then he and one of his co-workers (who, if you have read RC's other works you will recognize, but this can definitely be read as a standalone) drop in the gallery looking for some art for a picky client's office. Judah and Teddy catch each other off guard, but the chemistry is palpable. At least until he offends her - which leads to great fun with Logan, the woman Judah works with who will be familiar to some readers. I love their push and pull friendship almost as much as I love Teddy and Geoffrey's friendship.

Teddy has overcome a traumatic past, which is retold here, with great heart and soul (and without any gratuitous details.) I feel this is one area that makes this version shine much brighter than the previous one, but not the only. Heart and soul is something Ms Martin always pulls off like few others, and it is beautifully showcased in these pages.

My highest recommendations whether you have read her books before or if she's a completely new to you author.

“I received a free, advance copy of this book via Booksprout in exchange for my unbiased review”

‘Fool for him’ is a bit special because the story is a rewrite of the story ‘Fool for you’ (book 4 in the ‘Made for love’ series by this writer). I have read a few books of the ‘Made for love’ series but for some reason I never have read ‘Fool for you’ so I can’t compare both books or tell you if this story is very different from the previous one. I can only tell you what I thought of this story ‘Fool for him’.

Judah St. Michaels is happy with his life, he has a job that he loves and that he is very good at. He likes to spend his free time with a beautiful woman, he takes her to diner and later he takes her to bed. He believes in lust on first sight but not in love on first sight. Love is for fools and he is not a fool or at least not anymore. So when he sees Theodora (Teddy) Fitzpatrick for the first time, he’s immediately intrigued by her and he wants nothing more than to take her to his bed. But he will learn bit by bit that Teddy is very different than his other women. And there will come a time where he will have to decide how far he will go for Teddy. If she’s worth it to change his way of life or not.
Teddy never expected to feel attracted to a man who is so open and honest about his sexuality, about his lust for her. But from the beginning Teddy feels that there is more to Judah then he shows the world. And there will come a time that she will have to decide if Judah is really worth her trust and her heart.

It took me a bit to get into the story and that had nothing to do with the writing but with my own ‘personal’ feelings with the main male character Judah. Because from the beginning, it’s very obvious that he’s a big playboy and I wasn’t sure that he was the right person for Teddy. But I did appreciate his honesty about his sexuality and his ‘gentleman’ way about it. So I just decided to trust that there was a reason why the writer wrote this character this way. And indeed, the farther along I got into the story, the more I felt for Judah. Just like Teddy suspected, he did have more layers to him then you would think. He is more than just a player. I loved this gentleman manners, his eye for details and beautiful things and how he spoiled Teddy. There was an age difference of 9 years between them but I didn’t really felt it. Teddy acted mature for her age. She was shy and vulnerable at times but she also had a quiet but strong strength in her. She’s a ‘survivor’ of a terrible experience and you could feel it in her.

The second characters in his book Judah’s brother Benjamin, Teddy’s sister Harper and Teddy’s friends Andrew and Geoffrey were really wonderful characters and I loved them very much. You got both Teddy’s and Judah’s POV in the story. Something that I liked very much.

Judah and Teddy’s story continues in the second book ‘Fool for her’ in this series and I’m very happy about that!! Because although the book has a HFN, I also think that there is still more to know about their story. So I’m very looking forward to reading more about them.

I’m very happy that I read this story. The writer R.C Martin has her own way of telling a story and I like her writing style very much. It’s a subtle but still emotional way of telling a story. It slowly pulls you into the story without you even noticing it. And then you are very deep into it. I love it when a story does that.

Teddy is convinced she cannot be enough for any man, but Judah's attention makes her have second thoughts. Still, with his commitment-shy past and her insecurities, the way forward in terms of a relationship seems uncertain. Just when Teddy thinks she and Judah have found their stride, however, her past strikes with a vengeance.

Very early, the reader understands Teddy's reticence towards the opposite sex, and her fascination with Judah, in spite of his arrogance. The push and pull between them, mainly engineered by Teddy, showed that she had backbone, and at times, revealed a strength she was hesitant to acknowledge she possessed. I understood Judah's initial position, and to an extent admired him for it; he was who he was. I liked watching his character evolution as he developed feelings for a woman he thought would only be a passing fancy.

I wasn't expecting a cliffhanger, so that threw me off. Up to that point, the book had my attention. The way the dual POV was written was different, but good. I enjoyed the secondary characters, too. This emotional read will suck you in so deep before you know it.
