About the author

I am a retired Marine infantry colonel and now a full-time writer living in Colorado Springs with my wife Kiwi and twin five-year-old girls, Danika Dawn and Darika Marie. I am a two-time Nebula Award Finalist, a two-time Dragon Award Finalist, and a USA Today Bestselling writer.
I published my first work back in 1978, a so-so short story titled "Secession." Since then, I have been published in newspapers, magazines, and in book format in fiction, political science, business, military, sports, race relations, and personal relations fields. I returned to writing fiction in 2009, and I currently have over 100 titles published, 80 being novels. My novelette, "Weaponized Math," was a finalist for the 2017 Nebula Award, "Fire Ant" was a finalist for the 2018 Nebula Award for Best Novella, "Integration" was a finalist for the 2018 Dragon Award for Best Military Science Fiction or Fantasy Novel, and "Sentenced to War" was a finalist for the 2021 Dragon Award in the same category.
My undergraduate degree was earned at the U. S. Naval Academy (Class of 1979), and I have attended graduate school at U. S. International University and the University of California, San Diego, earning a masters and doctorate. I am a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the US. Naval Academy Alumni Association, and the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America where I'm serving as the Nebula Award Commissioner.
I have rather eclectic tastes. I have won awards in photography, cooking, writing, and several sports, earning national championships in rugby and equestrian events. When I'm not writing, I'm reading, cooking, going to the gym, taking my girls fishing, or traveling. I attend quite a few cons over the course of a year, and love meeting other people who love books.
I write because I love it. I only hope that others might read my work and get a bit of enjoyment or useful information out of my efforts.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 7, 2019I find it hard to review a book less than 50,000 words. I think of anything less as a "novella". Putting that aside, this was a quick fun read. The adventures of Beth and her friends continue. Plenty of action both off and on the ship, lots of downtime and even a little introspection.
We really get an inside look at what makes Beth a hero, she is all heart tucked into a small frame. This is a short work and it doesn't solve the larger problem with the "Crystals" but it is a complete story in and of itself. One thing I did wonder throughout the book and I don't know why it didn't bother me before, what if it was FALF instead of FAL? I know either is correct, I just imagine soldiers taking to the FALF (rhymes with Ralph) more than FAL.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 14, 2023This series has so much action and fun packed into each book that they fly past and feel shorter than is wanted. And yet each book covers exactly what is needed to move the story forward, so I think it may not be short as much as it leaves you wanting more. So it is good it is a series and there is another book. I recommend this book and series.

Beth is still a fascinating character. She goes on a secret mission. She meets some interesting people and encounters some Crystal aliens.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 24, 2019This series rates five stars for enjoyable storytelling, but a few little things annoyed me enough to drop a star.
First of all, all the books in this series are short, especially compared to many of the author’s other works. The series to date could easily be condensed into two books, or if it’s supposed to be a series of trilogies each arc of three could be one full length novel. By the time this fourth book came out, I’d forgotten some of the details from the earlier books.
The other issue I have is rather a technicality.
After a modestly successful career as a civilian exploration pilot the MC joins the Navy when war breaks out with antagonistic aliens (which she discovered on her final exploration voyage, btw). She goes on to become one of the most decorated pilots of the current conflict, indeed one of the most decorated aviators in history ... all in a four to five year time span. She becomes the first fighter Ace in generations, saves a capital ship, single-handedly saves an entire planet and receives the future version of the Medal of Honor ... and yet from what I can tell she’s only been promoted once, early on in the series.
Set aside her professional accomplishments and accolades, the Navy pilots have experienced atrocious attrition, in many battles taking more than 50% casualties - in a few battles much more, entire carriers being wiped out. This makes the MC one of the most experienced combat pilots in the entire Navy. In any hot war with such casualties, the best of the survivors tend to rocket up through the ranks, so the fact that the best pilot the Navy’s seen in decades hasn’t been promoted in three or four years seems highly unusual.
That said, I look forward to any future books in the series.
If you’re looking for something similar, check out the Families War series by Bruce Bretthaur, the Siobhan Dunmoore series by Eric Thomson, the Galaxy Unknown series by Thomas DePrima and anything by Mackey Chandler.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 11, 2024The higher ups have figured that the crystals are size orientated when a huge supply ship is the main focus in an attack! So now the "ANT" is on detachment with only 8 wasp fighters on a small carrier ship. This is so they can surprise attack and get back a captured planet!! Doesn't go well and now she's needed for a recovery spy mission!

Enjoyable series. Centre character is believable. Not perfect but still a hero. Enough action to entertain. Looking forward to the next book.☺
