Free Spirit (Murphy Brothers Book 2) Kindle Edition
Tate: I’m everything people hate. The spoiled, arrogant heir to a billion-dollar fortune. Scion of a family that made its name opposing LGBTQ rights. The last thing I expected to develop was a conscience.
I blame Emory Murphy—the golden-haired mess of a dreamer who turned my life upside down.
Somehow, I agree to pretend be Em’s boyfriend for his brother’s wedding on Summersea Island. Somehow, I don’t realize this means we’ll share a bed. Somehow, I find myself kissing him. More than kissing him. And liking it.
How do you go back to being friends after that? Hey, wanna grab some beers and forget about the time I had my mouth around your—yeah. Not happening.
With my family calling me home, I need to put this all behind me. But try as I might, I can’t get Em out of my mind.
He has no idea that I’m really falling for him. And my family has no idea who I really am. I just want to feel free for once in my life—but am I brave enough to tell either of them the truth?
Free Spirit is the 2nd book in the Murphy Brothers series, which follows a family of brothers as they find their sweet, snarky, and steamy happily-ever-afters on small-town Summersea Island. Each book can be read on its own—but why would you do that, when you could read them all together? Free Spirit is a 122,000 word m/m romance with fake boyfriends, discovering your bisexuality, and out-for-you themes. No cheating, no cliffhangers, and a guaranteed HEA.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 10, 2019Emory Murphy has had a tough life - indeed, it seems like every important person in his life has gone away and left him wallowing in misery and loneliness. With his recent relationship break-up, it appears that his life has hit rock-bottom. Tate Alexander, meanwhile, is running away from a life of notoriety and money - running away from a forced lifestyle that lacks empathy and consideration for any person that fails to live up to the expectations of his parents and the self-righteous agenda of their conservative national organization.
Tate meets Emory while tending bar at the Flamingo, a LGBTQ bar owned by Tate's grandmother, who also seems to be estranged from Tate's parents. Wishing to avoid the embarrassment of going to his brother's engagement party alone, Emory accepts Tate's friendly gesture to attend the function as Em's fake plus-one. This seemingly simple and innocuous arrangement, however, leads to a much more complicated series of events and emotions between the two men.
First, I must say that I am in awe of how brilliantly this book is written. Not only is the plot quite involved and complex by itself, but the subplots of the book certainly add a multi-dimensional quality of cohesiveness and intrigue to the book, as well. Indeed, with all the twists, turns and dips in this novel, I it found extremely difficult to put down!! The secondary characters in this novel are priceless. With each adding his own idiosyncrasies of personality, the secondary characters help to ground the main characters and give Em and Tate a sense of perspective, reality and direction.
The style of writing is superb in Free Spirit… the author writes with a meticulous attention to detail concerning descriptions of physical places and seemingly mundane situations, which, in my opinion, gives the book an exotic and charming appeal. The interactions of Em and Tate with each of his respective family members, and the way in which they were described in the book, is a testament to the ability of the author to convey each character's feelings of emotional confusion and mindset.
Spencer Spears is an absolute master at putting the feelings of his characters to words. While reading the book, I was spellbound by the imagery of the words used to describe the ways the guys were feeling. It was as if the reader was living inside the consciousness of each character - feeling the misery, alienation, fear, loneliness…. and, fortunately, the feelings of gratitude, inclusiveness and love, as well.
A wonderful read, with a little bit of mystery, angst and controversy - and a whole lotta love!! 5 stars, definitely!!
- Reviewed in the United States on February 19, 2022This is the second book in a series that should be read in order. This author has world-built the best little island small town and has really made their book setting come alive! I liked Tate and ‘Em but there was just a tad more needed like another chapter or two in this story. It may go on in the next book but I really wanted an epilogue at least! Still, don’t let my grouching keep you from this series, it’s quite worth the time!

- Reviewed in the United States on January 12, 2024This author has moved to my top three list of favorite authors!
His stories are captivating and hard to put down. The story Holds my interest and I keep reading late into the night because I lose track of time.
One book to go in this series and can't wait to dive into that tonight! :)
I'm so glad I stumbled onto these books!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 3, 2020So, the beginning of the book drags on forever. It doesnt start getting interesting until half way through. Also, the story between Tates grandma and the Island is never finished. The ending feels very abrupt, what happens with the foundation is never addressed and there's no 5 years later showing if they are together then or not. And it doesn't mention if they take taffy with them. Overall, halfway through it was an attention grabber, ending needs to actually be completed. Good book.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 11, 2019This writer's stories are always predictable: you wish the characters were real people (and, your real friends); you'll stay up later than you intended to keep reading; you'll find yourself laughing out loud on occasion [actually, many of them]; if you keep a list titled, "books to re-read", you'll prolly add a number of his works on it; you'll look forward to any/all future stories from him. As with all his books, you'll read things that aren't necessary for the storyline, but you won't edit any of them out cuz they just make the whole experience more fun. The characters are well developed & credible, the text is crisp, clear, and often with meaning & emotion that welcome you in and warm your heart. There's a good mix of things you see coming & unexpected aspects that surprise you -- but it's all written in a way that has you thinking, "That was a GREAT and creative way of so fully expressing what was going on!" My suggestion? Follow this author so you don't miss any story he publishes, whether in this series or any other. I've read a bunch of them - they never disappoint, are always rich with in-depth characters, and make you think, "Yeah! I wanna be part of that group -- life would be so much fuller if i were!" I received an ARC & offer this honest review. Other reviewers have described the story & plot well - i wanted to let you know how worthwhile all this writer's works are in hopes you'll check them out. You'll thank me if you do (I'm certain of it!)

5.0 out of 5 stars Emotionally Satisfying M/M Romance
I think Spencer Spears does world building exceptionally well. Spencer's books never focus just on the relationship between the MCs. Their lives, wholly, are fully fleshed out. We learn about their families, their jobs, their pasts, their disappointments, and personal growth. Yes, the relationship between the MCs is important and given significance in the story, but it's just part of the multi-layered story of these two very interesting characters' lives. I love that.
I thought Em was so sweet and easy-going in Deacon and Mal's story, but you get a greater understanding of his full personality and his insecurities in Free Spirit. Tate, too, was a great character and I loved his personal growth story quite a bit. Together they were so sweet and supportive of each other.
I am really looking forward to Connor's story. And hopefully Nolan's as well (fingers crossed).

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book
“The people with the greatest capacity to love are also the ones with the greatest capacity to get hurt. But that doesn’t mean you should shut yourself down. I’d be sad if you did.”
I got ARC copy from Spencer spears
Em needed a dated for his brother’s wedding that where Tate comes in.
This book isn’t about pretend boyfriend finally realized that they actual love each other in the end. This story what I got out of it was being true to yourself and not be scared about what other people would think.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sweet story beautifully told
I enjoyed the pace of the story, the kindness with which the characters, even their flaws , were portrayed. A warm love story interwoven with a cast of interesting characters. This was my first book by this author (I should have started with the book before this one really) and it certainly won’t be my last.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Real Roller Coaster of a story
It really underlined the difficulties of being who you really are and problems with parents that being gay is wrong
