    In 1944, American soldiers going through a French embassy in find info that Napoleon III in France led a conspiracy, in league with the Confederacy, to sunder the U.S. irrevocably so The South could win the Civil War. This confessional letter they found tells the captivating story of this Lincoln impostor who manipulated the war to his own ends and how his conscience is affected by it. Perfectly capturing the writing style of the time period and intermingling it with true incidents in history made for an enlightening, fascinating and ultimately entertaining read. You completely buy into its premise, winning the reader over with its strong and powerful narrative.

    I originally read this short story when it was published in Tales of Tinfoil: Stories of Paranoia and Conspiracy, an anthology filled with many more excellent short stories about conspiracy and paranoia just like this one!

    I read Chris Pourteau's The French Deception in the Tales of Tinfoil anthology. This alternate fiction tale was well written and researched, lending proof of what the author states in the afterword: "the best conspiracy theories are grounded in just enough truth that they MIGHT be true-with just a dash of imagination applied to 'the facts'". After reading the premise of the theory I thought I could predict the outcome of the story, but I was wrong. There were plenty of surprises that kept my mind trying to figure things out and determine how much I believed. Could the French manipulate the war to ensure a victory? What lengths would they take? Who could they trust to put their plan into action? Pourteau has a talent with the written word. Conspiracy theorists will enjoy this alt-history story about Abraham Lincoln and the Civil War.

    Chris Pourteau crafts a "what if" story that is so plausible that it makes you question everything you know about one of the most pivotal times in our nation's history. Pourteau is a master story teller. He deftly weaves the smallest of details into the fabric of the historical tapestry, planting seeds of doubt into the story you were sure that you knew all about. The jaw dropping twist at the end will have you thinking about this story for months.
    Cleverly plotted, beautifully told, masterfully executed, The French Deception is a must read.

    If you are a fan of Alternate History or Abraham Lincoln, you can't go wrong with this well-written story by Chris Pourteau. Conspiracy theories can be fun (cable TV is full of them), so don't miss out on one of the biggest conspiracies ever pulled off in The French Deception. Only don't go blaming me if you start feeling ultra-paranoid about everything you read, see, and hear after this one!

    I enjoyed this very much. Even knowing that it is not real, or to the point real, real in our history, it has just enough of the history that we know to make it seem possible. I throughly enjoy fictional books based on facts.
