Bound by Blood, Torn by Love…

In the shadowed halls of Kingmakers, a ruthless mafia university, the offspring of the world's most feared families come to master the dark arts of influence and intimidation.

Leo, unwaveringly loyal to his childhood friend, Anna, follows her into a world where love is a weapon, trust is a casualty, and survival is the only victory that matters.

But the greatest danger comes from Dean Yenin, a Bratva heir with a vendetta as cold as his heart. Dean plans to destroy Leo and take everything he holds dear, starting with Anna.

Can Leo win back his soulmate? Or is Anna lost forever…

The Lark Notes:
Imagine Kingmakers as a TV show... each book in the series is like one season of the show. Year One is a Friends-to- Lovers romance between Leo Gallo and Anna Wilk. Dean Yenin is the villain, but the entire series is written for his redemption arc. Half of you will hate Dean after Year One. Can I convince you to love him by Year Three? – Sophie

P.S. Kingmakers is second-gen – for the parents' story, check out my Brutal Birthright series.

“Kingmakers: Year One" is the first book in the epic dark mafia Kingmakers Series. It’s a forbidden friends-to-lovers romance filled with mystery, suspense, and kindle-melting bedroom scenes that take place everywhere but the bedroom.

Such a great start to this series!!!
4.5⭐ 🧩Childhood Friends 🧩Friends-to-Lovers 🧩Love Triangle . “All the light went out of my life,” I whisper. “I’ve been so dark without you.” . Review: I kept seeing this book and I loved the cover, so I knew I had to read it. This was my first book by Sophie Lark, and OH MY GOSH! The world she created and detail she put into it was incredible. I definitely want to go read her backlist now! I got so pulled into this world and the intricate details she gives that I felt as though I was there. I never wanted to stop reading, but I also didn't want it to end. It is told from multiple POV, which I absolutely loved! . Anna has been a chearleader and a beautiful dancer her whole life. She is fiesty, strong and won't take crap from anyone. She can definitely handle her own. . Leo has been the star basketball player with scholarship offers. He is used to being the popular guy who accomplishes anything he sets his mind to. . Anna and Leo have been friends since they were little. They grew up together and spent all their family vacations together. Anna decides she wants to go to Kingmakers and Leo can't imagine being without his best friend. So he goes with her to keep her safe. This world and this school were so intriguing! Kingmakers is a school for Mafia children where they learn the different aspects of their future lives. I was so hooked into the classes and the catergories each person was put in. I was a little afraid it would be dark due to the Mafia world, but it wasn't at all. The suspense and mystery that begins to build is perfect. I fell in love with all of the secondary characters as well, Chay, Zoe, Ares, Miles, Ozzy and even Dean because I know his story will be good. I can't wait for their stories! I need them all! I really loved the start to this series and I am so excited to continue in this world! I highly recommend it.

    The Heir

This book was unexpected in the best of ways. We’re introduced to Anna and Leo outside of Kingmakers and join them as they start their journey there, seeing and experiencing it for the first time right alongside them, which I thought was neat.

We get to see these two best friends at the highest and lowest points both together and separately and watch them mature and struggle through their feelings for each other, navigate this ruthless school, and make new friends and enemies.

I loved having the dual/multiple POV bc so often in books with just one it can be difficult to understand the other person’s motives and feelings. Leo and Anna are perfect together; they have literally been together since birth and grown through every stage of life by each other’s side, which was beautiful to see. The pacing of their changing relationship was very believable and artfully crafted.

All this being said though, this book ultimately is also a love triangle (which ordinarily I would avoid like the plague, but it’s Sophie so I knew it would be good!); Leo and Anna are joined by Leo’s cousin Dean, who has been raised in a radically different environment. I think we (and Leo and Anna) needed the triangle to cement the story.

Both Leo and Dean want Anna, although only one has a true love for her. I think Dean believes that he loves Anna but it’s not a true love, just lust mixed with toxic jealously of Leo and a desperation to have someone be his completely; it would be better to say he wants to possess Anna but for all the wrong reasons.

This book will make you feel a roller coaster of emotions; from anticipation, to dread, from anger to joy, from despair to contentment, it has it all. There were times I literally cried I was so angry and heartbroken over what was happening to the characters—that’s how good this author is at making the emotions jump off the pages!

We get to see how Anna and Leo so perfectly fill that inner need that the other has, which can only be met by what the other person provides. The first scuba diving scene I thought showed how Leo was Anna’s ‘North Star’ and her anchor and then later on we see how Anna is Leo’s guiding light and the root of his strength. And the intimate scenes? Whew!! 🤩🥵🌋🔥💥 The infirmary remains my favorite (man, the way it was written and how we see things from Leo’s perspective blew me away!).

And then there was Dean. He’s set up so well in the beginning as the villain that you love to hate. At times I truly despised him for what he did to Anna and Leo’s relationship. He was beyond manipulative and deceitful and some of the things he did were unforgivable (first party anyone?!) but he also showed us snippets of a life and a soul that were so bleak and filled with torment you couldn’t help but still feel a little sorry for him at times too. As much as I wanted to hate him I found myself unable to fully commit; while Dean was an unmitigated a**h***, he never sank into depravity and true cruelty (although he tried his best in the caves!). Honestly I think only the fact that we have his POV saves him from being seen as truly evil; instead we get to see why he does the things he does, get an idea of his motives, and see that while his actions alone may have been despicable, Dean is also all too human and therefore can’t be just one-dimensional.

I have to admit I have a tiny soft spot for tortured and despised male MCs and I love imagining how they could ever achieve redemption so I can’t wait to see where Sophie takes Dean in The Bully! One inner monologue hits you right in the feels with Dean thinking: “I feel nothing at all. Just a dark, empty space where my heart used to be. That’s better, I suppose. I was tired of hurting.” 😭💔😩

Overall a fantastic start to a new series!

(I do enjoy the artwork inside the pages!)

I think my reading preferences are changing and that is totally okay!
I don't think I will be finishing the series. This is just my opinion however you my end up liking it or hating it. That's why I love books, they are subjective!

I can't stand Dean, he was alright in the beginning then he just became unhinged & obsessed. At one point he actually violates Anna.

Haven’t read anything before by this author but decided to try it because I typically enjoy series books that have a little bit of fantasy to them. It’s starting a little slow so I’m having a hard time getting really interested in it. I will finish it and update the review. So, if you are a person that won’t finish a book if it is not catching your attention from the start, it may be a waste of money for you.

Leo and Anna come from the mafia world, more specifically, their parents come from the mafia world. Leo and Anna have been best friends for years, so when Anna is told she’s going to be going to Kingmakers, Leo decides to forgo his college plans and go with her.

Leo and Anna’s parents come from the Brutal Birthright series. They are expected to be at the top of their game, in every respect, especially considering that they are the heirs in their families. When they go there, they are met with many challenges. Leo sees his cousin, Dean, who hates him. In fact, they hate each other. There is a long-standing family rivalry that occurred because of things that happened 20 years before, in the other series. Because of that, there’s this animosity in the air whatever they are around each other. Dean notices Anna and is immediately attracted to her. However, Leo has had feelings for her for a long time, but he has never acted out on them, too afraid to ruin their friendship. Anna has also been attracted to Leo, but again is too nervous and afraid to lose their friendship.

Dean takes advantage of some misunderstandings and pursues Anna, convinced that he will be able to get her to move past Leo. This unexpected love triangle really added drama to this book, some angst, and a level of depth that was needed in order for characters to grow.

In this world, the things that the heirs need to study and learn is pretty amazing. I am very excited to see what the next books will bring. The world building was one of the reasons why this book is so long LOL but it was a breath of fresh air that kind of reminds me of Harry Potter. I was enthralled! I did feel like I was punched in the gut when the betrayal scene happened... but it wasn’t done on purpose... ugh... but still...

The heat level is very much slow-burn, but once it takes off, bam it heats up!! I’m sad I didn’t see more of the epilogue 🥵🥵🥵🔥🔥🔥.

I can’t wait to continue this series! I highly recommend it.

The quick pace and diferent pov make these books so easy to read, they are an easy 5 star for me just for the enjoyment 😉

    Spanish & English Opinion

    ESP ::

Recién descubrí a Sophie Lark.

    ENG ::

I just discovered Sophie Lark. I’m about to finish the “Brital Birthright” series but I could not wait for reading this book. The story is very original and I love to keep knowing about the original couples through this book.

Anna and also are the second generation of this incredible universe. They are bff but are in love with each other. However, they have been raised as “family” even through they are not and it has “forbidden” all over it.

I didn’t know if I was going to like the book knowing that there were OW/OM involved but the author did great managing the stories. Anna is very honest from the beginning about her feelings for Leo. Leo grows a lot through the book and learns that people are not meant to be taken for granted. The villain, Dean, he is redimible. I need his story ASAP.

Recommendation: just jump into the reading and love every second of it!

Once I started the first book I couldn't stop until I finished them all. They were so addicting. I read them all back to back within a span of very few days.

So, while some might say that you can read Kingmakers series without reading Brutal Birthright series, I would suggest otherwise. Technically, you can still understand the story without the prequel/the parents books, but you wouldn't have emotional connection to the past events that will be mentioned throughout the series. So, I think it makes a difference how you go about it. In fact, I would suggest starting this series right after Heavy Crown (which is the final book in Brutal Birthright series, so if you also want to read Underworld series, do that before this one.) because, we will be kind of seeing the aftermath of what takes place in Heavy Crown but from the perspectives of Leo, Anna and Dean who are their children, so it hits right emotionally.

    1) Kingmakers Year 1 : The Heir ....... 5 stars

This book follows Leo Gallo (who is Sebastian & Yelena's son), Anna Wilk (who is Mikolaj & Nessa's daughter) and Dean (who is Adrian's son) as they get enrolled in the Kingmakers. It's like a University which is located on a remote island for the elite kids of the mafia families all over the world. They're taught how to lead, how to fight, hack, torture and so on.
So, you can expect this book to set up the world and characters for the rest of the series. Imagine Hogwarts for mafia children but over 18 years old.

Leo and Anna have been best friends since they were born. Their parents rule Chicago as partners. Their moms were pregnant around the same time. So, they have been inseparable. You can see a lot Sebastian & Yelena's qualities in Leo. He is tall, popular, extremely handsome, charming, ambitious, smart with almost golden retriever vibes .... list could go on. On the other hand, Anna has the gloomy personality of Miko and Nessa's love as well as talent for dancing ballet.

Then, there is Dean ...... well, ahem let's just say he is the villain and a good one too.
Throughout the book, you see Leo and Anna grow, acknowledge their flaws, experience heartbreak, realise what they mean to each other, also overcome the idea that they are suppose to be forbidden together, because their families are so close (Gallos & Griffins) that they were grown up as cousins (not by blood) and we get to feel all the emotions during every one of those stages of their journey.

One of my favorite things about this book/series is Quartum Bellum. It's a competition where the students from all four years challenge one another. It's sort of like trials and the class captains have to direct them through each of those challenges. Leo is very competitive and a natural leader like Sebastian. So, it was so much fun to see him and the rest of his friends perform. I love trials, so I was thoroughly invested in them winning. This makes me want to point out the side characters. This book introduced them well and I was excited to know where their stories go after this.
To name a few, we have Zoe, Chay, Miles, Ozzy, Ares, Hedeon.
Anna and Leo were so cute together. If you love childhood best friends to lovers trope, then you will enjoy this. Even though, this book isn't too dark it still has some dark elements sprinkled here, so definitely check out the trigger warnings.
I loved this book. Leo and Anna will always be among my favorites. Also, I cannot not mention this - Sebastian and Miko's friendship was everything I was looking for. Their interactions were hilarious.
