From the Embers Kindle Edition
In the aftermath of tragedy, it’s strange the things you remember.
The deafening boom as the house exploded.
The paralyzing fear as I searched for my wife.
The blinding smoke burning my eyes as I carried her out.
But carved into my soul for the rest of my days would be the earth-shattering realization that the woman in my arms wasn’t my wife.
Bree and I were the only survivors—not that either of us were truly living after that night. As a single dad with nowhere else to go, I moved into her guest house. And somehow, through the guilt and grief, we forged an unlikely team.
It took years, but I watched the gradual return of her smile—slow and life-altering. The two of us could sit outside for hours, talking about nothing, and it filled the massive hole in my chest with new life.
I may have carried her out of that fire, but the truth was, Bree saved me. As we healed, the secrets and lies of the past smoldered in the ashes, threatening to ignite again.
Our love was born from the embers, and together we would go up in flames.

About the author

Originally from Savannah, Georgia, USA Today bestselling author Aly Martinez now lives in South Carolina with her four hilarious children.
Never one to take herself too seriously, she enjoys movies that can surprise her with a twist, charcuterie boards, and her mildly neurotic golden retriever. It should be known, however, that she hates pizza and ice cream, almost as much as writing her bio in the third person.
She passes what little free time she has reading anything and everything she can get her hands on, preferably with a glass of wine by her side.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 30, 2021Eason Maxwell is a singer/songwriter who spends most of his life on the edge of success. He almost breaks through the many barriers the music industry erects--almost. His wife Jessica Maxwell is tired of the struggle. Now that they have a little girl, she worries that Eason is not capable of supporting a family. He has an opportunity to sell his songs, but they are personal. They are his life story.
Jessica Maxwell comes wants a better life now. She argues to convince Eason that he must compromise. He is at a crossroads; does he change directions to keep his wife happy or does he keep his eye on the ultimate prize.
Rob Winters is Eason’s best friend. He is always there to restore Eason’s confidence. Coincidentally, Rob is married to Jessica’s best friend Bree. While the two couples are having an adult game night, at the Maxwell’s house there is an explosion.
The Maxwell’s house goes up in flames. Eason mentally pictures where his wife is sitting, crawls to her through the smoke, and carries her out of the house. He starts to go back for Rob and Bree when there is a second explosion. Eason looks down and realizes he did not grab Jessica; he saved Bree by mistake. How did this happen? How can he live with himself?
From the Embers> is an emotional story of two people struggling to put their lives back together after a tragedy. Poor Eason lost everything, literally. Not only did he lose his wife, but he also lost all the memories of their time together. Fortunately, he has his daughter, Luna. She gives him the strength to get up in the morning. Bree is in a similar situation. Her children get her out of bed every day. Now these two, not so friendly people, need to be there for each other.
From the first page, I am immediately caught up with the struggles of the characters before and after the fire. There are teary moments, smiles, joy, personal successes, a few twists, and a big “I didn’t see that coming” moment.
What I love most about this author’s writing style Is the way she brings the characters to life. You experience the emotions, good and bad, that the characters experience. Aly Martinez did a superb job showing the pain of loss, the slow journey of recovery, and finally moving on in a new direction. If you are like me when you reach the final page, this story will linger with you.
I love the hero in this story. Eason stole my breath. His pain and guilt are tangible emotions that carry through from the book to my heart. The journey from start to finish is incredible. Eason and Bree go from putting up with each other though anger, learning who they are, to supportive, then friendship.
Bree doesn’t start out as a favorite, but she grows on me as the story is revealed.
Love the children! Often, they steal the show. Luna, Madison, and Asher are so cute with their hijinks and the way they support each other, and their parents. Asher and Eason are a hoot. Their lighthearted antics, soften the worry and despair of Eason and Bree.
I highly recommend From the Embers. In Aly Martinez style, you will experience the story while reading it. She is so good at making all the emotions bubble up in me. What a read! I can't wait for the audio. I need this story again.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 15, 2024This is a such crazy story!! I enjoyed the writing and was hooked pretty early on. After the first few chapters, I was emotionally invested in the story and the characters and I just needed to know what happened. What a crazy ending, too. This story is about hardship, perseverance, grit, friendships/betrayal, love, family, work-life balance, music, and there’s even a little bit of crime/mystery/suspense towards the end. I definitely recommend!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 28, 2021Well, I hope no one expects me to do anything productive today, because this kept me up reading LATE into the night. Or I suppose “morning” would be more accurate, lol! This was incredibly compelling from the first page; the kind of book that held my attention from the start and NEVER let go. I’ve never read anything quite like it. It’s a gut punch to your emotions in the best of ways, taking the reader on a slow-burning journey that tugs on your every heartstring. I was devastated right along with these characters more than once, but I also felt the glow of love when they finally found the good in life again. The build in intimacy was incredible, feeling rich and fully developed – even in a book that isn’t particularly long. And this hero? I want him for myself. He is the perfect combination of sexy and adorable, with a sweet, steady side that absolutely melted my heart.
The story follows Eason and Bree, two people who have been a part of each other’s lives for years, though neither one would really consider themselves friends. They’re married to each other’s best friends, so they spend holidays and vacations together, forming a family unit even though they don’t like each other. Eason thinks Bree is a judgmental ice queen, while Bree believes Eason is a musician who needs to let go of his dream and step up for his family. When a double date goes terribly wrong, and both of their lives go up in flames, Eason pulls a woman from the wreckage. But he saved the wrong woman, and that will change every part of his life going forward.
I wholeheartedly recommend that you go into this one blind. The journey is all part of the process, and there are some gasp-worthy moments in here. First and foremost, it’s about finding love after loss, sparking a fire from the embers and building the life you truly want. I loved the found family aspect, the bond between Eason and Bree, and the tender moments that will get to you. It’s the kind of slow burn that takes some patience, growing just a little bit at a time – but the payoff is oh so worth it. Eason is probably my favorite part of the book, but Bree gives as good as she gets, and the two together are something really special. This is the kind of 5-star rating that never once wavered; I loved every bit of it. The only tiny criticism I’ll offer – if it’s even that – is that I’m still digesting the final act. There’s a moment that just about stopped my heart, and the tonal shift is jarring. I would’ve been perfectly happy ending the book with the warm glow I was basking in prior to that moment, but I’ve gotta hand it to the author – I didn’t see it coming. Looking back, there are countless threads that are pulled together by that moment, but it might’ve been a step too far. I don’t know. All I know is that this was outstanding, and one of the easiest 5-star ratings I’ve given in awhile. I received an early copy (then purchased it for my collection), and am voluntarily leaving a review of this emotional romance.

5.0 out of 5 stars Heartbreakingly beautiful
Gawd this book totally ripped my heart out. Eason and Bree have to start their lives over when their spouses die tragically. They had never really gotten along but were thrown together after their tragedy. But when a major betrayal is discovered they go from friends to so much more. Their love story was so tragically beautiful, and then when their happy ending is on the horizon their story takes a crazy turn. One I didn’t see coming at all. I was totally blown away with the twist. But it made their happy ending that mush sweeter. This was the first book I’ve read of this author and I have to tell you I’m hooked. I can’t wait to read more in the future

3.0 out of 5 stars 3.5 stars
I have read this author before and I know she knows how to write angsty stories, but sadly this one wasn't as good as I expected.
It was a cute read that had potential, but overall the twists were obvious so I wasn't surprised at all. I did love Eason and Bree and until 50% it was a solid 4 stars read, but the second half was a bit boring.
It's not a bad book, actually the characters were enjoyable and the writting good, it's just that it could have been better.

I loved the narration. It kept me hooked on until i was done with it. The way the story and the characters were built is spot on.

A very unique romance. I was hooked on this from the first chapter. There was so much angst and heartache. I loved the twists in this story.
