Ever had a secret you'd literally die to keep? Ever known the person who'll make you rethink all of it?
Cody Jones shouldn't have died in that car wreck.
Bobby Anderson shouldn't have heard his secret right before he died.
To the outside world, Bobby is an attractive, charismatic baseball star.
But inside, Bobby holds secrets—including his closeted sexuality—and each secret alone has the power to destroy his carefully-constructed life.
When his best friend Cody dies, Bobby is thrown into the unwitting role of supporter for Cody’s grieving fiancée, Lexie. The issue? Bobby has long-harbored feelings for her that he never allowed to surface.
Torn between his growing attraction for Lexie and devotion to his deceased friend, Bobby is forced to re-examine his life and concern about divulging his sexual identity. Another secret spoken by Cody during his final moments eats away at Bobby’s conscience, driving the wedge of Cody’s death deeper.
Once these secrets come to light, will Lexie ever be able to forgive them? Can she accept Bobby for who he is? Will she ever want anything to do with him again?
Can love conquer a broken past?

The storyline has great flow, and romance that will keep your eyes glued to the page. Not to mention the impeccably depicted heartache present in every scene! ... Your heart definitely takes a roller coaster ride in this book. From dropping to your feet to souring so high you can't help but smile while you cry. AUTHOR'S NOTE
I wrote about some very sensitive topics and did my best to handlethem with the utmost care. Some of these topics and situations are veryclose to my heart and were things that brought tears to my eyes as Iwrote them. This is the story I needed to tell, the book I needed towrite. I hope that the way I depict these scenes in A Game Like Oursshows respect and thoughtfulness to those in similar situations. Muchof this book was drawn from my personal experience and the experi-ences of those close to me. Our culture has a long way to go towardacceptance. I hope that in a small way, this book can help. For all mybisexual readers, I hope you feel seen. You matter to me.
A NOTE ABOUT EATING DISORDERS:
In preparation for this novel, I researched Eating Disorders both insideand outside of athletics, doing all I could to represent this subject withcare and consideration. Please know that this is a work of fiction andmay or may not feel real or reasonable to some individuals. Bobby'sstory is authentic to his character. The struggles he felt are very closeto my heart and I hope that it provides a message of hope in the way itis represented. Eating Disorders are unique to the individual. If you ora loved one is challenged with this, there is help available.

About the author

Lover of stories since before they could walk, Marissa has always had a passion for creating characters and worlds. Learning to read was a challenge, so they learned words by writing them–taking their notebook everywhere and asking total strangers how to spell. Since then, a laptop has replaced their trusty notebook and their stories have evolved into novels.
Marissa lives with their partner, two children, an adorable puppy and an endless collection of David Bowie hats. They enjoy reading in the sunshine, with a bottle of chocolate milk and music playing in the background.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 30, 2021I'll admit, I'm not a typical reader of anything with romance as the main focus of the plot, but the story of Bobby and Lexie is so much more nuanced than just a mere romance. Not only must they deal with the challenges of learning to love after a tragic loss, but they must each confront demons from their past and present that could destroy them both.
There are some pretty rough themes that are addressed in this book; Mariss does a stellar job of handling them with grace, dignity, and poise that I found both enjoyable and heart-wrenching in all the right ways. These characters are well-defined and the plot equally so; I can adamantly recommend this book to anyone looking for a book that will challenge their mindset and tug at their heartstrings.
**Note: This book does have content dealing with issues such as eating disorders, mental health disorders, and trauma. It also has some heavier sexual content that might not be appealing to some readers.**
- Reviewed in the United States on April 9, 202110/10 recommend.
This book should be required reading for high school (or college) athletes.
Not only is there a great love story, the author deals with sooooo many topics that are relevant in this day and age:
Friendship, love, family, acceptance, self-acceptance (big difference between the last two) finding what makes you happy and going for it, even if there’s a chance you might fail, forgiveness (in it’s many forms), and even faith. (And to be clear, I SHY AWAY from Christian literature- this is not that. It’s faith as in “something”- whether that be Jesus or energy or just a hope for something good.)
This book is *heartfelt* but in a non didactic or preachy way. It has a beautiful love story at its core that will also force you to question certain things in your own life- how you’d react, what you would do. Also, whew, STEAMY. Loved it the whole way through.
Recommend for - hea, mf, mm, m?, romance, sports, young adult, new adult, steamy-reads, and-let’s be clear- LGBTQ friendly (but not in a shove it down your throat way.)
(Also- just gotta say- if you identify as queer in any way shape or form- there is nothing f-ing wrong with you and if your family ostracizes you that is THEIR bad and not yours and please reach out because you are worthy just the way you are (as long as you don’t hurt puppies) and you will find your tribe and IT GETS BETTER.)
Great first book by this author, will definitely read further!
- Reviewed in the United States on August 9, 2021I enjoyed the sass and charisma of the author, if she hadn't been so friendly and sweet I'd never have given this book a try.
The characters were well rounded and interesting, the plot made me want to read more of it. I will definitely tell people about this series and read the rest myself!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 13, 2021A Game Like Ours takes readers on an intense rollercoaster of a ride as readers are carried through the highs and lows of two friends' journey as they navigate life and love after loss. This story beautifully depicts the complexities that individuals have to navigate on their path to healing. The author delves into some very intense topics, causing the readers’ hearts to swell and constrict in the most amazing ways. The characters are tangled up in a web of secrets, and readers will laugh and cry with them rooting for them to find love and healing after their hearts have been shattered into a billion pieces. The depth of the characters’ personalities is very well-written making readers feel like they know them on a personal level.
I loved that the author included “conversations” with Cody. Even though he has passed, these entries provide the reader with a snapshot of his life and personality adding another rich, beautiful layer to the story. Her ability to seamlessly weave these throughout the story speaks volumes of her writing ability and talent. The ending of the book was heartwarming reminding readers that we are all beautiful and unique and life's circumstances do not define us, but it’s how we react to them choosing to forgive and love that matters the most.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 30, 2021Every once in awhile I will read a book that gut punches me so hard, I will close the book and say "dang, I freaking loved that book" but can't formulate thoughts or words as to why. I will just feel it in my bones and heart that this book will stick with me for days, months, years - well A Game Like Ours ("AGLO") is one of those books. I finished this book almost two weeks ago and I am having a hard time formulating words to express how much I love this book. AGLO really hit me in all the feels. This is not your typical romance novel. There are a lot of heavy and sensitive issues/topics addressed in AGLO but in my opinion the author approached and addressed them all with so much grace and respect. Gut punchingly beautiful. I am a little bit in awe of this book and that it is a debut book from the author. I cannot wait to see what she give us next.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 30, 2021I have been eagerly awaiting this debut novel, and I wasn’t disappointed. The author has poured her heart and soul into this book, and wow... The evidence of her hard work is in every page of this heartwarming story. Bobby’s grief... it made me want to reach out and hold him, to whisper that everything will be ok, that it’s ok to be who you are.
An inspiration to the lgbtq+ community and to writers everywhere, this author has shared with her readers something personal, something wonderful.
This book is so very special. The author has opened my eyes to many great books and authors, but, more importantly, she has honoured me with her friendship, love and passion ❤️🧡💛💚💙💜
A Game Like Ours is a beautiful story, and one close to my heart. If you love a good tearjerker romance with lgbtq+ characters then this is the one for you - but be warned, you will need tissues!

4.0 out of 5 stars Paper back
I was lucky enough to be recommended by another author to be gifted a paper back copy of this book. I absolutely engaged and understood this story as a bisexual mum it was nice reading from the male point of view and realising the problems can be the same.
