About the author

Kate Haley is a speculative fiction author who works predominantly in fantasy and horror. While currently content to fill their days with writing and table-top RPGs, their grander plans involve world domination. Something akin to the tyranny of the greatest city atop the Disc would be an acceptable standard. They believe a super-villainous overlord would be an upgrade, given that our current villains lack style and imagination.
After all, super-villainy requires Presentation.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 21, 2024I was entertained by this gritty, almost non-stop action, dark fantasy. I was captivated by the opening paragraphs until the end of the story. I admired the worldbuilding which combined the mafia, cultists, and black magic together. I was intrigued by the complexity of Dr. Vincent Temple's character. I liked Vincent's circle of friends. I am looking forward to the next book in the series. I enjoyed Tom Kereama's narration as his performance was exciting and kept my attention. I was given a copy of the audiobook. I volunteered, without financial gain, to post this review which reflected my honest opinions regarding this audiobook.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 30, 2023The writing is all short sentences. With an occasional fragment. It reads choppy. It lacks flow. I would not recommend to anyone who reads at more than fourth grade level.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 14, 2024I read it. I liked it. Imma reads the others. Swords, guns, magic and mages, adventure, danger, it's all the things I enjoy in fantasy wrapped in one tale.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 7, 2021This book is like Indian Jones meets the Witcher meets HP Lovecraft, but with some seriously badass women. Kate Haley is a genius at balancing fast paced action with character development and a generous helping of witty banter. Totally recommen for anyone looking for a fun monster romp!
- Reviewed in the United States on November 21, 2021Gateway to Dark Stars has a fun adventurous tone that reminded me a little of Indiana Jones. The characters were also endearing - I particularly liked Lucy and her combination of vulnerability and toughness. However, I was possibly not the right audience for the book as there were a lot of action sequences and I found my attention drifting in these parts.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very good Lovecraftian style story.
It's been a very long time and a ton of books since I read a story as good as this.
I WILL be reading the rest of the set now just to see more of the adventures.
Absolutely beaut.

5.0 out of 5 stars A brilliant dark fantasy adventure
I really enjoyed this story. It combines the macabre and unsettling elements of lovecraftian horror with the action of the Witcher, or Indiana Jones.
The characters are witty and play well off each other.
The world building is a facinating take on urban fantasy.
I look forward to the rest of the series.

4.0 out of 5 stars Intriguing!
In ‘Gateway in Dark Stars’ Haley’s shows her range by writing something completely different from her classic epic fantasy ‘War in the North’. Here she channels Lovecraft horror, gothic demons, and mad cultists; updated with a hint of Jim Butchers Harry Dresden. Her depictions of a recognizable 1920’s world, that malignant demons want to conquer, was expertly done.
The protagonist Vincent, one of the last of the Brotherhood of Hunters, honor bound to protect the world, has physical and emotional scars from a lifetime of fighting battles. The unavoidable human losses in this never-ending war leave him with fears that it can’t be won. The other protagonist is Lucy. First appearing as a classic ‘Lovecraftian’ female destined to be sacrificed by her mad father to bring demons into our world – she quickly breaks out of the victim trope to become Vincent’s apprentice.
The book shows good character development but the ending, while not a cliff hanger, does leave many questions unanswered. I am very curious about the dangerous ‘Dreamlands’ and the role of the enigmatic ‘Prince’. So, while not explicitly acknowledged as the first in a series, this book sets up the possibility of a series – as long as it is well received by Halley’s followers.
While the Horror genre does not generally grab my attention, I found the Halley’s book to be unexpectedly interesting and engrossing. Especially her exploration of cross genre world building which hints at an unexpected storyline and exploration of personal costs in a way that Jim Butcher does so well. At this stage I give her 4 out of 5 stars but will change that to 5 stars if the character and plot development hinted at in this book occurs in the rest of the series.
