Gettysburg: A Tale of the Second War for Pennsylvanian Independence (Tales of B-Company Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.3 out of 5 stars 69 ratings

“Chris Pourteau has taken the world of Pennsylvania and given it the life, texture, and action of the best war epics, while filling that world with humanity, humor, and vivid characters you'll never forget. As good or better than the original.” — Michael Bunker, author of Pennsylvania Omnibus and Brother, Frankenstein
____________________________________________
In Michael Bunker’s Pennsylvania, Jedidiah Troyer becomes the hero of TRACE’s fight against the Transport Authority. But even before Jed’s adventure begins, the Second War for Pennsylvanian Independence has raged for a generation. Gettysburg is one tale of that long and bitter struggle.

When we join them in their fight, the forces of TRACE are running out of time. Severely outmanned and outgunned, they know that if they can’t find a way to level the playing field with Transport—and soon—defeat is inevitable. Fate presents them a chance to turn the tide of war. A large supply of Transport’s okcillium—the all-important material powering laser weapons and other military technology—sits largely unguarded in a small town between the AZ and the City. That town’s name is Gettysburg.

But fortune rarely allows history to be made so easily. Tactics, heroics, and bloody slaughter are once again the order of the day as Bestimmung Company sets out to seize their prize. In this small town with a famous name, the soldiers of B Company are about to discover that history has a way of repeating itself.

Chris Pourteau's Gettysburg is an amazing trip into the world of Pennsylvania created by Michael Bunker. This riveting fan fiction takes place before we meet up with Jed in Pennsylvania, and imagines a battle at Gettysburg that is reminiscent of the bloody battle in Earth's history.

This is a fast-paced, action packed story of battle and the struggle to survive revolution. The characters are relatable, well-written powerhouses and I can't wait to get my hands on their subsequent stories. I received this as an ARC from Chris and read it in one sitting-I couldn't put it down!

I'm not sure how long Chris has worked on his craft-but he is an exceptional new talent. His writing style draws the reader into the story quickly, with barely a chance to come up for air. I felt like I was there. THAT is great writing. I downloaded a sample of his previous release, Shadows Burned In. I purchased it after reading the first page. He is that good.

A worthy addition to the world of Pennsylvania. Passing this one along today to my Forward Observer (Army) son who has seen more than his share of action in both Iraq and Afghanistan. Pourteau captures the personal nature of what is often seen as cold and impersonal by those who have never been in close combat. More than that, Gettysburg continues the story of those from the AZ and the complexities of competing cultures. Great job for a first time out.

Chris Pourteau's Gettysburg not only represents one of the first published works to extend the universe of
Michael Bunker's Pennsylvania, it also shows us a glimpse into what's happening in the larger world, outside the AZ. The change in location is almost as unique as the change in tone, as Gettysburg is a fast-pace war story, focused on a small unit at war with a much larger enemy.

Gettysburg doesn't let fast-paced battle scenes detract from characterization in any way. We get a fascinating view into the personalities and back stories of each major, and a few minor, players. And, as the intro to any good tale should do, gives us a taste of much bigger mystery and leaves us eager to learn more.

Fans of Bunker's Pennsylvania get to see a little more of the wider world outside the AZ and get a taste for the costs of the war with Transport on those not pledged to non-violence. They also get to see some cameos from a few familiar characters.

For those who have not read Pennsylvania, they get a fast-paced, small-unit combat story that stands on it's own, but serves as a great intro into the world of New Pennsylvania.

Highly recommended for those who have and have not read Pennsylvania. 5-stars.

Chris Pourteau has drawn on the historic Battle of Gettysburg to create an intimate military science fiction tale set in the world of Michael Bunker's Pennsylvania. I was lucky enough to receive an ARC of this and read it in a single sitting.

Like an orange with two skins or a really small onion, the story really has three layers.

At its core it's a military science fiction story of two armies battling for resources. Think the Battle of Serenity if you're a Firefly fan.

Wrapped around that core you have the Pennsylvania mythos. I read Pennsylvania before reading Gettysburg but I don't think that's necessary, it's a standalone story and doesn't assume prior knowledge. But, if you have read Pennsylvania, it adds an extra dimension to the story.

Finally, Pourteau has woven elements of the historic Battle of Gettysburg into the story as Easter Eggs for anyone who is familiar with that part of American history.

I really enjoyed reading this. It's fast paced, tense and a worthy addition to the Pennsylvania universe.

    Definitely recommended.

If you've read Michael Bunker's sensational science fiction novel, Pennsylvania Omnibus, then Chris Pourteau's related novella, Gettysburg: A Tale of the Second War for Pennsylvanian Independence, is not to be missed.

With parallels to the original three day battle of Gettysburg over a hundred years ago, this thrilling military sci-fi adventure puts you back in Bunker's world from the perspective of TRACE soldiers in their fight for freedom. It is a fast-paced adventure that pulls you right into the battlefield.

Do yourself a favor and read the original novel, and then read Pourteau's novella. You're going to love it, and you will be thrilled to find out Pourteau, Bunker, and others have a Pennsylvania anthology coming out in November.

I highly recommend this story from Chris Pouteau. I've read a number of a Chris's short stories and this is with out a doubt the best. I've never been a lover of military themed story telling Bc. To me the storytelling's gets bogged down in all the naming of the guns and the like. But Chris created genuine characters that i cared about that's what took me on through. Very good work Chris.

I have to say I wasn't sure what I was getting into as I had never read anything by Chris before. Well I have to say I am now looking for more Books by him. Set in Michael Bunkers "Pennsylvania" universe I felt it was great addition, providing a new insight to the war. The characters were well developed and the I found myself unable to put it down. In this case I was fortunate that it was relatively short (about 79 pages) so I finished it in one sitting. Would definitely recommend for anyone who has read "Pennsylvania".
