The Girl I Didn't Kill For (Jessie & Nick Book 2) Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 147 ratings

The cops have come to arrest me.

I know it’s them the second I hear that knock on the door. Cops have a knock I’d know in my sleep. That solid firm knock that you can hear anywhere in the apartment. I heard that knock many times before. I heard it when they took my father away. I heard it more times than I can count on my hands each time my brother Tony got busted.

But I never thought it would ever be me.

This is actually happening. These cops are taking me to jail. I’m going to be booked on a Murder One charge. I’m going to sit in a jail cell just like my brother did and my father did. I got the best lawyer in the city, but I’m not sure if even he can get me out of this one. The evidence is damning.

And the worst part?

The woman I love believes I’m guilty.

Full content visible, double tap to read brief content.

Annabelle Costa is a physical therapist who loves the following things, not necessarily in this order:

--Chick lit (both reading it and writing it)

--Cupcakes (both making them and eating way too many of them)

--British accents (both listening to them and pretending to have one)

--80s movies (both watching them and quoting them out of context while her friends frown in confusion)

--Pop music (both listening to it and singing it very, very badly in the car and/or shower)

Annabelle keeps a blog at http://annabellecosta.blogspot.com/, where there's contact information so you can tell her about how much you also love making and eating cupcakes. (Admit it!)

A great and entertaining novella by Annabelle Costa! The reader is delighted to meet Nick and Jessie from "The Girl I Didn't Marry" again and follow the couple on their complicated path gaining each other's trust again. Nick is adamant trying to make up with Jessie while Jessie, initially resisting, can't deny her still-lingering attraction towards Nick.
The story includes drama and humour, crime and romance and at one point leaves the reader suspect basically everyone guilty of murder. The setting of this story is a bit darker than in other Costa's novels due to Nick's "job" but it is by no means sinister. Whenever the tension rises too high, the author breaks it off adding some (black) humour. For example, like in this excerpt:
"She gives a strangled laugh. “You, uh… you don’t really break anyone’s kneecaps. Do you?”
“Come on, Jessie,” I say. “Of course not.”
I mean it. Nobody really breaks kneecaps. Fingers are a lot cleaner."
Costa, Annabelle. The Girl I Didn't Kill For (Jessie & Nick Book 2) (Kindle Locations 1724-1729). Rose Bud Press. Kindle Edition.
I would recommend the book for everyone who's in for a romance with a happy ending and doesn't shy away from some suspension and crime which actually spice up the whole story!

This the concluding volume of Nick and Jessie's story, and it's a fine successor. With one exception, the characters.are well-drawn and credible; the complex, even convoluted, story never gets away from the author, and the love story at the heart of the book is really touching.

It's the character of the female MC, Jessica, that is unsatisfying. We are supposed to believe that she has loved her childhood hearthrob, Nick, for 18 years since he got shot and paralyzed. Yet at every set-back to their re-connecting she is ready to think the worst of him and to throw their relationship in the dumpster. This is simply not credible and severely weakens the story, in my opinion.

Another element that is not completely satisfactory is the treatment of the male MC's paraplegia. In this volume, it is more like background noise, than a tangible factor in the unfolding relationship of Nick and Jessie. I suppose this was inevitable, given that for most of the volume the 2 MCs remain physically apart.
But it's a pity and wastes the dramaric--and especially sexual--possibilities of Nick's being in a wheelchair.

Finally, a brief comment on the writing. Aftervreading a number Ms. Costa's stories, I was disappointed in the more than occasional sloppiness of the writing or, perhaps, the editing of thisone. There were too many torture construction, unclear linkages of pronouns to noun and, although less frequent, misuse of words: "startle," e.g., is purely a transitive verb.

For all it's flaws, this is still a solid story, with a gripping mystery trust toward the end. The reader comes to CARE about the characters and their fate, whichbis an admirable achievement for any writer.

I look forward to reading more of Annabelle Costa's work.

This was such a superb read! I loved the characters, and they seemed so real, they jumped right off the page. You voiced each character perfectly, and I was able to live inside of their world through your words. The setting is vividly described and I felt I was there in the story. This book was such a terrific sequel to the first book. You had me on the edge of my seat until the very end.
    DEFINITELY A MUST-READ !!

3.5 stars... now I liked this book don’t get me wrong but what bothered me was the main characters were never really together. Only in the last 10% of the book did they together the rest of the book the h was engaged to someone else and the H was with multiple women. I just think it was a good story with likable characters I just wish they would have had more of a story together.

I loved this book! I loved Nick, the irresistible hero with expressive soulful dark eyes, who is at once vulnerable and dangerous. I loved how Annabelle Costa played with these shifting realities of extreme vulnerability (the disability) and utmost danger (the family liaisons). I think what makes the hero so delicious is that unsolved paradox. The way he’s so aware of his vulnerable condition, sometimes taking advantage of it, and how he tries to project his alpha persona in spite of it all – that was riveting to read.
So, I’m just awed by such a delicious hero, who mixes in his sheer yumminess and handsomeness such strong vibes of vulnerability, strength and alphaness. I’m just awed and grateful for Costa’s prodigious talent and imagination to create such a hero.
I haven’t read “The Girl I Didn’t Marry” (first in the series) yet, perhaps I’ll even reread this one before.

Annabelle tied up everything and kept me guessing until the end. Nick was an amazing male lead. He was kind, yet tough. I love my heroes to be a bit rough around the edges. Nick was the best part about the entire story. Annabelle is a talented author with fast paced, intriguing novels. I never get tired of her stories. She has me as a long term reader!

I read the Girl I Didn't Marry right before this, but you could probably get away with just reading this, but you may as well read both to get the full story. This was definitely a page turner with a holy you know what twist!

I love nick and even his (normal) but intense reactions. He and his life and family make it work. It probably doesn't have the depth if you don't read #1, but enough was in this one a reader could enjoy it with out the first book.
I will read this author AGAIN!

The second of two. Read the first, first. It is it worth. Very exciting in every part. Sexy and lovely. You feel with the Charakters. I like this stile very well. Every book of Annabelle is different despite the same disability. I never bored to read her books. Hope more coming soon. She grows better with every new book. Like her way to give every book a new life. Time traveling to mobster boss!!! For everyone is something to find in her books. She makes a great job to be correct with details. Like that!!!

This was an incredibly suspenseful, fascinating and humorous page-turner!
This second book definitely exceeded my expectations, every chapter was a cliff hanger and the plot unravels so sufficiently. Unlike Costa’s other books there’s a sense of foreboding throughout the whole story as the title suggests, and the air of tension is both intriguing and worrying, yet this is balanced by the hilarious writing of hers’. Loved this book very much, and would love to read more!
