Glimmer : A saga filled with magic and intrigue (The Glimmer Saga Book 1) Kindle Edition
There has been peace between Azuria and Carnelia for an age. Both Kingdoms living a harmonious existence of trade and friendship.
But it hasn’t always been this way. There was once war, a war that lasted hundreds of years. A war that took much and gave little.
It began over two items that were long forgotten even before the conflicts ceased.
Now, a new terror stalks the land
One that is dark, mysterious, terrifying, and deadly.
The uneasy trust between the kingdoms is about to be shattered by acts of betrayal, and malevolence.
Old magics have resurged. Two orbs, one red, one blue, both equal in power have been unearthed. These orbs were designed for peace, understanding, and good, however, in the wrong hands they could be devastating.
With ultimate power, comes ultimate responsibility.
The responsibilities of The Glimmers.

About the author

D E McCluskey was born in 1973, in Liverpool, England. He is the author of novels, graphic novels and comics. He lives with his daughter (an author in her own right (at the age of 8) with her children's adventure The Hangry Hamster), his partner, her daughter, and a sausage dog called Ted.
He began writing in 2011, creating his first comic publication entitled Interesting Tymes, an anthology of short horror stories written in rhyme for children and adults. This was quickly followed by the second in the series, along with a spin off. Dave then moved on to more adult related fiction, releasing a number of one-shot comics, followed by his first, full length book, the graphic novel, Doppelgänger.
More graphic novels and comics ensued, including a collaboration with artist Joe Matthews to produce a retelling of the classic Christmas tale, A Christmas Carol, only this time rewritten completely in rhyme.
Dave then turned his sights onto writing novels. His debut novel The Twelve was released in 2017 to great reviews. This was followed by a collaboration with a local, Liverpool music historian, to produce a historical thriller called In The Mood… For Murder, based in Liverpool in 1946.
Dave likes to work mostly in dark, or mainstream horror, although he has cross genres into extreme horror, comedy, thrillers, romantic drama, and children's books.
He is also working with a number of other authors/comic creators, in collaborations in their works.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 11, 2022*I'm not going to give you the 'what this book is about' blurb - you can read that elsewhere.
1. This isn't 'the usual' genre I read for McCluskey, but he's a heck of a nice guy and really talented so I wanted to see what this was about. I'm glad I did! I've been known to read a bit of fantasy so it's not super far outside of my comfort zone. Especially because there are some nasty bits to help me feel more at home (fantasy war stuff...with a slight horror bent).
2. The ending is a cliffhanger - because, as the title suggests - this is the first in a series. So, no neat resolution at the end, but hold tight because more will be coming. If you can't handle a cliffhanger, I recommend not starting this until more of the books have been published/released.
3. I love the MC - Cassandra. And I hate Endellion even more than I love Cass. These characters are both well written and super different. The emotional polarity mixed with the plot was just so good!
4. I've found that many fantasy worlds and storylines are super difficult to get immersed in and to figure out what the nuts is happening. This fantasy story was not difficult to follow or understand at all! I actually started reading this book during a huge life transition for me and I couldn't concentrate on a lot of things + I wasn't super feeling horror because emotionally I just couldn't deal. One night I was *this close* to having an anxiety attack as I was laying in bed. I grabbed my Kindle and started reading this. I got so engrossed I managed to completely avoid the anxiety attack and the only reason I stopped reading is because I was falling asleep and dropping my Kindle on my face was getting annoying.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 14, 2023McCluskey is a true master of his craft. His versatility in writing different genres is amazing. This book hooked me into this world right from the start, I could barely put it down. To say it was gripping would be an understatement. Excellent story with characters you'll love and hate and a beautiful world to get lost in.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 18, 2024Glimmer is a unique fantasy. This would be a great pick for fantasy lovers or those wanting to dip their toes into the genre. It was easy to follow and entertaining.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 21, 2022This book was exciting, engaging and thrilling. The way the author describes things, I was able to visualize it and felt like I was there!
I was a little confused about where the antagonist came from in the beginning, but all was explained over time.
I definitely can't wait to read the next book in the series to see what happens with Azuria & Carnelia!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Fantasy read
I was instantly absorbed in the troubles between the 2 kingdoms, Azuria and Carnelia, the unfolding explanations of 'the glimmers' and their uses.
A very well written fantasy tale which has a few scenes of brutal fighting and death. There's so many great characters and a fantastic twist with the not so loveable Endellion.
The book ends on a cliffhanger so obviously I'll be reading the second in the series straight away.
