A lost little girl named Amanda stumbles into a cave. It’s the lair of Grey, an old dragon in failing health. Too young to know she should fear the creature, Amanda is quickly won over by Grey's kindness toward her. Though humans and dragons have been enemies for eons, Amanda and Grey form a fast friendship based on storytelling and sharing warm fires on cold nights. When an army of savages known as The Bane threatens her village, Amanda seeks help from her old friend. But Grey, the last of the dragons hunted to extinction by humans, refuses to help Amanda. Can Grey find it within himself to set aside centuries of hatred for humans to save her?

Amanda’s a young girl who befriends a dragon, who’s the last of his kind and they’ve forged a deep friendship over the course of many years. Amanda says it’s the last time she can visit, as her village will soon be overrun by the Bane, hordes of men coming to conquer and plunder their land. Due to his advanced age, Grey feels he’s unable to do anything. What transpires next is a frantic free-for-all, leading to an action-packed finale. Yet, while the action is amazing, so is the quiet character building moments of gentle banter between two old, yet highly unlikely, friends. You can feel Grey’s weariness and general decrepit state as well as the emotional intimacy these two have shared, leading to a satisfying and well-earned ending, which I thought was poetic perfection.

I read this short story when it was originally published in The Dragon Chronicles (The Future Chronicles), an anthology filled with many more excellent short stories about dragons just like this one!

This delightful story from Chris Pourteau tells of an unlikely friendship between a young girl and a very old dragon. The author does an exceptional job of describing how the dragon must feel after all these years of surviving, and being the last of his kind. The two share a wonderful connection that will tug at your heartstrings as you hear the stories shared between them. The clever ending is one I did not expect. This is a well written dragon tale with a unique storyline.

A delightful tale of friendship forged between members of revival species.

Action-packed. Easy-to-read. Entertaining. Great world building. Scary. Tragic. Wonderful characters.

Part of "In the Lair: A Fantasy Bridge Anthology."

I received a copy of this book as a gift.  This is my honest review.

Love it! It's a great book. Shows how the past between two races can influence feelings for many years. It also shows how a friendship can change all of that.
