Guarding Morgan (Sanctuary Book 1) Kindle Edition
Some secrets are worth dying for. Others are worth killing for.
Morgan Drake never thought his life would be reduced to shadows and whispers. After witnessing the cold-blooded murder of a whistleblower at the hands of a corrupt cop, he becomes the only person who can testify—and the next target. When the FBI safe house is compromised and his handler goes dark, Morgan is forced to flee. He has nowhere left to turn… except Sanctuary.
Nik Valentinov is used to high-risk protection—calm under fire, emotionally detached, and always prepared. But his latest assignment is anything but routine. Hiding out in a remote cabin with a terrified witness wasn’t part of the plan, and neither was falling for the man he's sworn to protect.
As relentless enemies close in, Morgan and Nik must survive ambushes, deadly terrain, and their growing attraction. But in a world where every step could be their last, will love be their salvation—or their undoing?

About the author

RJ is the author of the over one hundred novels and discovered romance in books at a very young age. She realized that if there wasn’t romance on the page, she could create it in her head, and is a lifelong writer.
She lives and works out of her home in the beautiful English countryside, spends her spare time reading, watching films, and enjoying time with her family.
The last time she had a week’s break from writing she didn't like it one little bit and has yet to meet a bottle of wine she couldn’t defeat.
She loves to talk to readers and can be contacted via rj@rjscott.co.uk

- Reviewed in the United States on May 25, 2013Guarding Morgan is the first in the R.J. Scott's sanctuary series. While this was a series not everyone will connect with, I found as a first book and couple, this was incredible. We get a good idea of what is going on, and I didn't get lost during the actual story line. While this book is a romance, there is a crime solving aspect to the book.
The two MC's worked well together. "Tough guy" Nik and "nice guy" Morgan. My feelings for these two were that the titles were not as suited as some people think. In no way did I think Morgan was an innocent little boy, and Nik had that soft side under everything. It was a nice contrast for the two MC's. It can get kind of boring when the MC's are what everyone expects from the beginning. I love depth to my characters and I got it.
The story is basic enough in the beginning. Morgan was the witness to a murder and a cop friend of Nik's was protecting him. The friend got shot and Nik took over from Morgan. It was a messy case and something that scarred Morgan. Nik knew this and fought any attraction because he knew it was his job to protect Morgan. Nothing ever words out the way people expect though, and lovable Morgan managed to get Nik to agree to a sex while we're here deal. But like most romances, Nik and Morgan fell in love.
We had a mixture of cute and hot scenes. The shower scene was a particular favourite as well as the river bank one. I enjoyed the ending, some may say it was rushed, but I was happy that we got them together. It also introduced us to Dale, our next Sanctuary MC. He was a hero for me in this and I loved him for the wonderful deed he did.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 18, 2012Nik and Morgan's characters were well developed, and I liked the slow start to their relationship, as well as Nik's actions all the way though. I thought he was very true to life. There's a couple other of RJ Scott's books that I like better, hence the 4 stars, but this was a very enjoyable read and I'll be picking up the next books in the Sanctuary series.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 27, 2016Okay, I am officially hooked! I have thoroughly enjoyed all the other R J Scott books I have read and so took a chance on a new series (well, new to me, anyway) and I knew after the first few chapters that I was hooked. I've already purchased the next two in the series and can't wait to read them. In Guarding Morgan, the two main characters appear one dimensional on the surface when they are introduced but there are many levels to their personalities and their approach to life. Your heart goes out to Morgan as he struggles with his new life as a federal witness that the FBI can't protect due to a breach in security. Nightmares plague him. Nik is tired. He's just coming off a difficult assignment and planning on some down time when his closest friend calls him. Taylor is FBI and he has just been shot and hasn't even called 911 yet. The guy he was protecting (Morgan) has been sent to find Nik so that Nik can protect him when Taylor couldn't. Turns out Sanctuary is Morgan's only chance. This book went to places I expected and to others I never saw coming. I'm intrigued with Sanctuary as an idea and a possibility. Also pissed at the FBI's attitude toward some witnesses. I recommend this book to anyone who likes mystery, romance (don't be put off because it is two men) and HEA's. There's just enough of a cliffhanger to pull you into the next novel in the series without feeling as if you were set up. Go for it! You'll enjoy the ride.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 12, 2023The premise looks promising but the story is actually pretty boring. It took me a while to finish the book. The characters are lackluster. Nik is flat and Morgan is annoying. The writing is good though so I will give the next one a try.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 6, 2024I usually enjoy Scott’s writing and will try reading it again when I’m in a different headspace. Didn’t click for me -yet. I will still recommend it to fans of R. J. Scott.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 13, 2023RJ Scott has quickly become one of my favorite authors. I think it's the way she writes explaining the story and characters, defining the scenes and describing the emotions and dialog of each character... and oh yeah the great imagination and story telling ability.
Anyway, this book series was excellent, the stories superb and yeah... published in paperback!
- Reviewed in the United States on September 26, 2015As always RJ Scott, never disappoint you, when you get into her world.
I read this last night as I couldn't sleep and it didn't lull me to sleep.
Morgan Drake is a cubical rat, sweet, shy, withdrawn and adorable to no end. He wants to be an artist but had to get a job to help his family out.
One night he is witness to a murder and after that, he is a witness under FBI protection.
When his hideout is compromised, he is picked up by Nikolaj Valentinov, a bodyguard working for Sanctuary.
They hide in a safe house up in the mountains, away from other people.
Nik is the typical determent by-the-book bodyguard, eyes on the ball and all that. However, he is also rather lonely and soon falls hard for the sweet Morgan. The feelings are mutual and after a little fighting they end up in the shower together – and isn't that a treat for them and us as readers.
Love and sex happens over the next weeks but soon it is time to get Morgan to the witness stand to testify.
However, not everything is going the way it is supposed to.
Morgan and Nik are a sweet and adorable couple, providing smiles and happiness and a little sad along the story.
PS; The otter, ohhh the otter ;)
- Reviewed in the United States on April 13, 2012This was the first book in the series and I have bought the next one already.
The storyline while not new was well written and done better than alot of other books I have read.
The sex was hot, the plot kept flowing, and I read the whole thing in one sitting.
Great job by this author.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant
I have seen this book advertised but haven't had chance to read it until now. I have to say worth waiting for one of the best action stories I have read in a long time. I love these kind of stories as they keep you on your toes through out. I cannot wait to read the rest of the series

5.0 out of 5 stars Review on "Guarding Morgan (Sanctuary Book 01)"
„Twenty, one sixty-six,Altamot,western, black cat, lemon pie“. This is the start of my most favourite book series written by RJ Scott. Her „Sanctuary Books“ have been on my Kindle for years and are on regular re-reading every time I feel I need a good, smooth series with great guys, action and a gripping criminal story. Guess, a review from my side is more than overdue!
In Sanctuary Book 01 Morgan is at the worng place at the wrong time and witnesses a cold blooded execution to a young woman by an uniformed police officer. Before he can testify his FBI safehouse is compromised .Morgan is on the run to safety with those words above in his head that lead him to Nik,who works for a private founded organisation providing close protection when all else fails. Nik becomes Morgan's new bodyguard and they hide in the Adirondack's wilderness. Soon it is way more for Nik than just keeping Morgan alive!
That sounds cliché but RJ Scott's version of Nik&Morgan coming together is so sweet and believable, I never can stop reading those chapters because both guys feel so vibrant. Like the surrounding description of Lake Dante. The end of book 01 is actually the start of a well-structured, multilayered criminal case around a mighty family dynastie being involved in politics and crimes. The question, why Elisabeth had to die in that alleyway is just the beginning of it all.
On a side note, the audio book version narrated by Sean Crisden is 3 1/2 hours of pure listening entertainment, too, getting you pulled right away into the world of Sanctuary!

3.0 out of 5 stars Forced proximity action/adventure
3/5 I enjoy forced proximity as a trope, and that’s definitely what this action/adventure turns into. I was entertained and didn’t mind the time that was spend in the sanctuary, but I didn’t quite feel that Morgan and Nik clicked enough for declarations of love. They were trapped, bored, and attracted to one another, but they either didn’t share enough or not enough time passed to fully convince me that these two are meant to be together based on what we see.
I noticed other reviewers mention an anti-women stance, with lots of behaviour dismissed as being like a girl (fainting, emotional issues, etc.) I didn’t remember any of that so did a quick search and didn’t come up with a single mention of “girl” in the text I read, so I think it must have been updated at some point to remove that.
I enjoyed the mystery of trying to figure out who was really behind things (with proof), details about Sanctuary, Morgan leaning into the art he loves, and Nik discovering he can want more in life. I liked the swimming, how much they enjoyed cuddling, and the idea that they’ll have a lot more time in the future to get to know one another more completely.

3.0 out of 5 stars Okey.
This book is the beginning on 10 books, with one big arc. Each book is focused on a couple.
I liked the book, liked the guys.
Just the masochism and misogyny in this book is through the roof

3.0 out of 5 stars A straightforward bodyguard romance
Sanctuary employee, Nik Valentinov, provides bodyguard services and is tasked with keeping prosecution witness, Morgan Drake, safe. Feelings develop when they stay in a remote safe house. I’ve loved everything I’ve listened to by RJ Scott but I’ve realised they’ve all been more recently published novels until now. This is a far more straightforward instalove story than the wonderful Lancaster Falls or Harrisburg Railers series and that’s as it should be - authors evolve and mature over time. I’ve come across the setup in Guarding Morgan a few times so there were no surprises and I found things a little forced and way too cutsie. There’s a repeated phrase, “... like a girl”, that’s used disparagingly each time. I hope it wouldn’t be included these days. I’ll try the next book in the series because I notice it was only published a couple of years ago. Sean Crisden provides his always excellent audio narration.
